Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sight Reading in Latin for the Second Year The material for sight reading offered in this book may be used in two ways. Teachers who believe that the passage for translation should be placed before the pupil without prepa ration, will suggest for his use nothing more than the vocabulary of new words, the notes, and the rule of order accompanying each selection. Those who believe that some preparation should be made will find material suggested at the beginning of each exercise. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Year Latin For Sight Reading: Selections From Caesar And Nepos This volume contains considerably more Latin than is generally read in the second year. The purpose of the additional matter is that the teacher may be given a com paratively wide range of choice and not that a much greater amount be read. It cannot be too strongly urged that teachers should exercise the utmost care lest sight trans lation become a matter of quantity rather than of quality, and lest the pupil think that translation is the result of combining memory with guesswork. It must be under stood that the purpose of sight translation is the develop ment of power - not the careless reading of much Latin. The difference between sight translation and the prepared translation is one not of quantity but simply of method. In sight translation, only that information is given which is absolutely and wholly new to the pupil. For the rest he must depend upon his own experience and ingenuity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin Reader: Nature Study and Easy Stories for Sight Reading During the First Year in Latin During the first year pupils must form the habit of reading Latin. If we had the material, they might learn to read Latin as they learned to read English, by reading. What can be done to get this material? Of what should this material consist? We are preparing them to read authors. Our own experience has often shown us that the first few pages of a new book seem difficult usually the most difficult of the whole book and so much so that we might say of many books: Well begun is half done. The majority of pupils who read much Latin, read Caesar, Cicero, and Vergil. Their first attack upon each of these authors is nearly always made upon the first pages of the Gallic War, Book I or Book II, the First Oration against Catiline, and the First Book of the Eneid. Their reading during the first year can be made to contain every important word and every form and construction occurring in those few pages. During the first year's work, students of Latin are obliged to read hun dreds and even thousands of sentences illustrating Latin forms and syntax. Those sentences are for the most part fragments of the sentences of Caesar and other Latin authors and are usually arranged so as to illustrate and review the use of certain constructions with regularity and precision. Book Latin at Sight

Download or read book Latin at Sight written by Edwin Post and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin at Sight: With an Introduction, Suggestions for Sight-Reading, and Selections for Practice This little book is an outgrowth of a teacher's attempt to teach Latin. The greater part of it was prepared in 1886, but any further attention to it was precluded by a prolonged absence from America. The Introduction is intended for teachers rather than for pupils. No attempt has been made to divide the book into Lessons, but it is believed that the running catch-words will facilitate its use. The grammar references are to the books of Allen and Greenough (abbreviated A. And Gildersleeve and Harkness It goes without saying that these pages are not so much intended for persons who can read Latin as for those who desire to learn how to do so, both for such as have, after a considerable expenditure of toil and patience, thus far failed to learn, and for those who are more fortunate in that they have not yet tried and failed. The second part on How to Read is followed by about one hundred and eighty Selection: for Practice. Some attempt has been made to graduate these Selections. While I would not fail to recognize the work of the pioneers in this field, to whom I owe much of whatever success I may have had in this line of endeavor, and to whom reference is more directly made in these pages, I feel myself under especially great obligation to Professor J. B. Greenough of Cambridge, to whose hints (see Preface to the A. And G. Edition of Cicero's Orations, 1886) and criticism this attempt to help those, who desire to learn, owes much of whatever value it may have. Of my friends, who have helped me by critical reading of the proof sheetsiv prefatory note. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Easy Latin for Sight Reading for Secondary Schools: Selections From Ritchie's Fabulae Faciles The difficulty that appears most formidable to begin ners is the strangeness of the Latin order. Perfect familiarity with the Roman ways of constructing sen tenoes is, however, an absolute essential to easy reading. The strangeness of the order is Often more apparent than real. Examples of the periodic structure and of inverted order are not uncommon in English and are readily understood, e. G., Whom ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From Latin Authors For Sight-Reading The selections used in this book have been chosen with a view to several purposes. Connected passages not too difficult for the ordinary pupil have been used in the main, because such Latin is standard. The short, impossible Latin sentences so frequently met with, lack not only the flavor but the essential features of good Latin. Solid blocks have therefore been cut from the work of the masters.
