Book Adaptation to Chronic Childhood Illness

Download or read book Adaptation to Chronic Childhood Illness written by Thompson, Robert Joseph Thompson and published by Amer Psychological Assn. This book was released on 1999-07-01 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States, the lives of more than 10 million children are affected by chronic illnesses. In this book, the authors introduce a multidimensional framework for examining the development and adaptation of children with chronic illness. This framework encompasses biomedical, psychological and socio- ecological factors to be considered in developing intervention efforts to enhance adaptation in this population. Specific chronic illnesses discusses are asthma, cancer, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, sickle-cell disease and spina bifida. It is divided into four sections that cover the impact of chronic childhood illness, developmental changes, enhancement of adaptation and goals for public policy and research. This book is intended as more than a reference tool for those studying the process of adaptation; it can serve to influence the formulation of research questions, intervention programmes and public policy.

Book The Effects of Drugs on the Foetus

Download or read book The Effects of Drugs on the Foetus written by J. B. E. Baker and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If this review is in fact based on a fair cross section of the literature it is clear that the main stimulus for research into the action of drugs upon the foetus has come from clinical obstetrics. Although there is a large volume of work concerning drug effects upon the foetus it has been relatively piecemeal. Thus the whole field is open for systematic, fundamental, and quantitative investigation.

Download or read book Galanin written by Tomas Hökfelt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-08-18 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Galanin is a neuropeptide found both in the central and peripheral nervous system. The 29-amino acid peptide (named after its N-terminal glycine and C-terminal alanine) was identified in 1983 by its C-terminal amidation. This 'reverse' approach, that is to discover a substance through a distinct chemical feature, and only subsequently to characterize its biological activity, was novel and has been successful in the identification of several other peptides. After the structure of galanin was determined in 1983, functional studies were performed with material purified from natural sources until the synthetic form of the peptide became available. Galanin can act as transmitter, modulator and trophic factor, and is involved in a number of physiological processes such as hormone secretion, cardiovascular mechanisms, feeding and cognition. This peptide may also be of significance for a number of pathological processes/disorders including pain, depression, Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, addiction and cancer. This wide diversity of actions is mediated by three galanin receptor subtypes. The studies reviewed in this volume give a fairly complete overview of the spectrum of the biological actions and functions of galanin and its receptors and on possible therapeutic applications in a number of pathological conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume records the critical historical developments in thermal physiology and makes them accessible to new and senior thermal biologists and scientists in related fields. Readers will discover how the discipline developed all over the world. Contributions from 14 different countries recollect all prominent discoveries, starting in the 18th century. Like other volumes of the Perspectives in Physiology series, this book reveals the people behind these discoveries. The authors also set the scenes in which the research was conducted in their countries. From geopolitical frameworks to new technologies and extraordinary personalities - this volume shows that scientific progress is influenced by many, often unforeseeable, factors. The history of thermal physiology not only is a story about individual outstanding scientists, but a testament for open collaboration and international comradery.
