Book The Federal Republic of Nigerian Army

Download or read book The Federal Republic of Nigerian Army written by Mohammed Chris Alli and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A former general in the Nigerian army, defence attache to Zimbabwe and member of the Abacha caucus, chronicles the role played by the army in Nigerian history, from the first military coup in 1966 to Obasanjo's accession to power in 1998. He describes his own experiences in the army at home and abroad, including a section on his personal interactions with Abacha and the caucus. The author writes in anger at the domination of political hegemony and the subsequent intervention of the military into politics, the perceived dichotomy between people and state, and its implicactions for issues of development and human rights. He states: 'This book is not an indictment of the military of which I am a part. It is my perception of the conduct of my generation and the multifarious forces at work amongst and about them. It is not a verdict on society, rather it is an articulation of the ecstasy, the fears, the constrictions of a nation in turmoil, a nation pulling itself apart.'

Book Social Warfare Cultivating a Revolution for a Nation Under Siege

Download or read book Social Warfare Cultivating a Revolution for a Nation Under Siege written by Matthew Geddie and published by Atlantic Publishing Company. This book was released on 2020-03-20 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America is under siege and unless we act now, it will be too late. When we cast a false light on reality to avoid recognizing the truth of a situation, it becomes much more difficult to distinguish between what should or should not be acceptable. Uncomfortable truths are brushed aside and malignancy festers. Great societies have toppled because they failed to do what was necessary to save themselves. And America will be no different. No revolution ever began while people were content and prosperous; only when they opened their eyes and realized that they no longer had to be oppressed. Then public outcry begins and the people revolt. Strength will come in numbers as we put our nation back on track. The old pillars of our once-great society are crumbling. The left wing, radical, social Democrats have slowly chipped away at our once solid foundation. We must stand up and fight or be lost among the ruins of history.

  • Release : 2002-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780803213302
  • Pages : 334 pages

Download or read book Siege and Survival written by David Beck and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Menominee Indians, or "wild rice people," have lived for thousands of years in the region that is now called Wisconsin and are the oldest Native American community that still lives there. But the Menominee's struggle for survival and rights to their land has been long and hard. ø David R. M. Beck draws on interviews with tribal members, stories recorded by earlier researchers, and exhaustive archival research to give us a full account of the Menominee's early history. Beginning in the seventeenth century, the Menominee's traditional way of life was intensely pressured by a succession of outsiders. Native nations attacked other Native nations, forcing their dislocation, and Europeans introduced the fur trade to the area, disrupting the traditional economy and way of life. In the nineteenth century Anglo-Americans poured into the Old Northwest and surrounded the Menominee; as a result the Menominee people were confined to a reservation in 1854. ø Beck examines these crucial early events from an ethnohistorical perspective, adding Menominee voices to the story and showing how numerous individuals and leaders in the trading era and later worked diligently to survive. The story is a complicated one: some Menominees encouraged radical cultural change, while others?as well as some non-Menominees?aided the community in its struggle to maintain traditions. Beck provides the most complete written history to date of this enduring Indian nation.

Book Globalization and Self Determination

Download or read book Globalization and Self Determination written by David R. Cameron and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-04-12 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the nation state under siege? A common answer is that globalization poses two fundamental threats to state sovereignty. The first concerns the unleashing of centrifugal and centripetal forces - such as increasing market integration and the activities of institutions like the IMF, World Bank, and WTO - that imperil state sovereignty from 'outside' the nation state. The second threat emanates from self-determination movements that jeopardize state sovereignty from 'inside'. Rigorously analyzing popular hypotheses on globalization's effect on state sovereignty from a broad social sciences perspective, the authors use empirical evidence to suggest that globalization's multilevel threats to state sovereignty have been overestimated. In most instances globalization is likely to generate pressure for increased government spending while only one form of market integration - foreign direct investment by multinational enterprises - appears to increase any feeling of economic insecurity. This volume will be invaluable to course instructors at both graduate and undergraduate levels, policy makers and members of the general public who are concerned about the effects of globalization on the nation-state.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The situation the Matzav as it really is. Television audiences might be forgiven for believing that the nightly news presents the whole picture of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The broadcasts are by now familiar. A blown out Israeli bus, charred and smoking. Survivors sitting by the roadside, shocked and bleeding. Israeli tanks rolling into dusty Arab villages. The words "cycle of violence", "terror", and "retaliation". See it all in photographs. But how does it feel to be walking down a street, knowing that at any moment, the next explosion might engulf you and those around you? What is it like to go to work or school on a bus -- in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv or Haifa, hoping it will remain intact for the journey? This is a unique, controversial, and thought-provoking artistic critique of the situation in Israel today, conceived and created by the young Israeli artist, Doron Goldenberg, a graduate of the Bezalel Art Academy in Jerusalem. In this powerful work, through the use of both words and images, Goldenberg captures a sense of the impact of terror that can't be broadcast on television. He has also created a visual tool that conveys a mood -- a sensation -- that can't be communicated via a news-commentator. Published in conjunction with Israel at Heart, a non-profit organisation that seeks to promote a better understanding of Israel and her people.

Adolf Hitler never had nukes, but Blake argues the Iranian government will soon. Blake continues with his argument, saying Iran is seeking nuclear weapons to promote its goals of conquering the oil-rich countries of the Middle East; driving the United States out of the region; and eventually destroying Israel, Europe, and the United States. This book is intended to be not just a picture of where Americans are, but a wake-up call to let Americans know that the Khomeini network is actively planning to destroy the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Irish soldier has never been a stranger to fighting the enemy with the odds stacked against him. The notion of charging into adversity has been a cherished part of Ireland’s military history. In September 1961, another chapter should have been written into the annals, but it is a tale that lay shrouded in dust for years. The men of A Company, Thirty-Fifth Irish Infantry Battalion, arrived in the Congo as a United Nations contingent to help keep the peace. For many it would be their first trip outside their native shores. Some of the troops were teenage boys, their army-issue hobnailed boots still unbroken. They had never heard a shot fired in anger. Others were experienced professional soldiers but were still not prepared for the action that was to take place. Led by Commandant Pat Quinlan, A Company found themselves tasked with protecting the European population at Jadotville, a small mining town in the southern Congolese province of Katanga. It fell to A Company to protect those who would later turn against them. On September 13th, 1961, the bright morning air of Jadotville was shattered by the sound of automatic gunfire. The men of A Company found their morning mass parade interrupted, and within minutes they went from holding rosaries to rifles as they entered the world of combat. This was to be no Srebrenica; though cut off and surrounded, the men of Jadotville held their ground and fought. This is their story.

Download or read book How the Country House Became English written by Stephanie Barczewski and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2023-07-22 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of how the country house, historically a site of violent disruption, came to symbolize English stability during the eighteenth century. Country houses are quintessentially English, not only architecturally but also in that they embody national values of continuity and insularity. The English country house, however, has more often been the site of violent disruption than continuous peace. So how is it that the country how came to represent an uncomplicated, nostalgic vision of English history? This book explores the evolution of the country house, beginning with the Reformation and Civil War, and shows how the political events of the eighteenth century, which culminated in the reaction against the French Revolution, led to country houses being recast as symbols of England’s political stability.
