Book The Effects of Sideslip Aspect Ratio and Mach Number on the Lift and Pitching Moment of Triangular Trapezoidal and Related Plan Forms in Supersonic Flow

Download or read book The Effects of Sideslip Aspect Ratio and Mach Number on the Lift and Pitching Moment of Triangular Trapezoidal and Related Plan Forms in Supersonic Flow written by Arthur L. Jones and published by . This book was released on 1949 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The variations of lift and pitching moment with sideslip in supersonic flow have been calculated for a representative gorup of plan forms. The variations of lift and pitching moment with aspect ratio and Mach number at zero sideslip were also investigated. The analysis was based on linearized potential theory and was applied to triangular, trapezoidal, rectangular, and swept-back plan forms without dihedral.

Book Flight Measurements of the Rudder Control and Sideslip Characteristics of Four Vertical Tail Arrangements on the P 40 Series Airplanes

Download or read book Flight Measurements of the Rudder Control and Sideslip Characteristics of Four Vertical Tail Arrangements on the P 40 Series Airplanes written by Harold I. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 1942 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction: Directional control difficulties had been experienced in P-40 series airplanes in dive demonstrations and inadvertent entry into spins in service operations. At the request of the Army Air Forces, Materiel Command, quantitative measurements of rudder trim force change with speed and power, rudder force reversals in sideslips, and rudder positions in sideslips and straight flight of a P-40E airplane were made. Quantitative measurements of these items were also made on three other vertical tail arrangements supplied by the Curtiss-Wright Corporation. The results of these measurements are presented in this report.

Book Vehicle Handling Dynamics

Download or read book Vehicle Handling Dynamics written by Masato Abe and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2015-04-20 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vehicle dynamics are vital for optimizing a vehicle's drivability, efficiency, and safety. Understanding the forces and motions on a vehicle (both theoretical aspects, like basic equations of motion, and practical ones, like tire mechanics and human vehicle control) is integral in the design and development of all vehicles. Masato Abe's Vehicle Handling Dynamics, Second Edition, provides comprehensive coverage of vehicle dynamics, enabling readers to visualize and invent better vehicles. Vehicle Handling Dynamics begins with an overview of the fundamental theories of vehicle handling dynamics, based on simple equations of motion. The book then extends to driver-vehicle behavior, handling quality and active vehicle motion control. In addition, this new edition includes two new chapters. Chapter 9 covers vehicle motion control for electric vehicles, crucial in this new era of automobiles. Chapter 12 studies the classic issue of model-based handling quality evaluations (challenging the traditional dependencies on test drivers for determining a vehicle's drivability). Written by one of the most distinguished authorities in the area, Vehicle Handling Dynamics, Second Edition, lends equal and careful consideration to both theory and application, providing valuable insights for students of and engineers working in vehicle dynamics and control. - Discusses the fundamentals of vehicle dynamics from basic theory to hands-on applications, using Newton's equations of motion to show the link between mechanics and vehicle behavior - Provides practical examples and real-life details to ensure thorough understanding of vehicle handling dynamics and control - Includes case studies and worked examples using MATLAB® and Simulink® - Covers all variables of vehicle dynamics, including tire and vehicle motion, control aspects, human control, and external disturbances

Book Basic Course in Race Car Technology

Download or read book Basic Course in Race Car Technology written by Lars Frömmig and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-28 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of the book is on the driving dynamics of racing vehicles. The interaction of the tyre, the aerodynamics, of the chassis and the limited slip differential specific to racing vehicles is dealt with. A chapter on the basics of vehicle dynamics makes it possible to get started with this topic even without prior automotive engineering training. A historical review and a consideration of the essential safety aspects create an understanding of higher-level requirements, which are specified, for example, by the technical regulations.

Book Test Pilot

Download or read book Test Pilot written by Brian Johnson and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-06-20 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Test pilots - dashing and courageous young men or foolhardy gamblers? In this fully illustrated book written by the producer of the BBC1 television series of the same name, we follow the ups and downs of a group of trainee test pilots at Boscombe Down in Wiltshire. Beginning with the exacting selection procedure, we discover what personal and professional qualities a pilot needs in order to become a test pilot. Only six UK and twelve foreign students are chosen each year and, once selected, the pressure on them steadily mounts. As the students learn to push each aircraft's performance to its limits they, too, are being mentally and physically stretched further than ever before. Training is given on both fixed - and rotary - wing aircraft and by the end of the course each student is fully conversant with the different techniques necessary to fly each type. They learn how to recover safely from spins, how to cope with sudden failures of equipment in mid-flight and how to land an aircraft with no power. All the time, they are assessing each aircraft's capabilities and the scope of the on-board technology. The final part of the course is the 'preview exercise' when every student is required to evaluate an aircraft he has never flown before and to make a formal presentation to his tutors and examiners. Using a number of remarkably frank interviews with students and tutors, Brian Johnson explores the process of becoming a test pilot and reveals both the stresses and successes of the year. The RAF has given its full support to both the book and the television programmes and thus has enabled Brian Johnson to produce a unique and authoritative account of the training for one of the most responsible and exciting jobs in modern aviation.
