However, 55 million of the nation's children attend public and private K-12 schools where poor air quality, hazardous chemicals and other unhealthy conditions make students (and their teachers) sick and handicap their ability to learn. In 2006, the "National Coalition for Healthier Schools" ground-breaking Lessons "Learned: Children--Victims of a Public Health Crisis", a national collaborative report from more than two dozen contributing organizations and individuals, provided case snapshots of children and personnel at risk as well as state-by-state impact data for the first time. This report updates and expands the 2006 national collaborative report. It shows not only the deep, long struggles to pass and to secure enforcement of laws in the states and locally, but also the continuing environmental public health crisis that is devastating the health, and the ability to learn and to stay in school for tens of millions of American school children every day. At highest risk are children who are in the lowest income, worst-performing schools and those children with underlying health and learning impairments. At least six million school-age children are without health insurance, meaning that it is highly unlikely that their daily environmental exposures are being effectively detected and addressed. Food is provided by for-profit farmers, for-profit processors, for-profit wholesalers, and for-profit retailers. Most food is purchased with the consumers’ own money, but a significant amount is purchased by low-income individuals using food stamps. Why can’t education be provided similarly using education stamps? We trust for-profit enterprises to provide our food. Why can’t we trust for-profit enterprises to provide K-12 education? Fearmongers have frightened us and made us into gullible compliant socialists who despise commercial activities in education. Go to the supermarket and ponder its marvelous array of foods and then contemplate how a for-profit K-12 education sector would please and amaze its customers.

This document expands upon earlier school guidance documents by providing a menu of tools that school and health officials can choose from based on conditions in their area. It recommends actions to take this school year and suggests strategies to use if the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) finds that the flu starts causing more severe disease. The guidance also provides a checklist for making decisions at the local level. Detailed information on the reasons for these strategies and suggestions on how to use them is included in the "Technical Report." Based on the severity of 2009 H1N1 flu-related illness thus far, this guidance also recommends that students and staff with influenza-like illness remain home until 24 hours after resolution of fever without the use of fever-reducing medications. For the purpose of this guidance, "schools" will refer to both public and private institutions providing grades K-12 education to children and adolescents in group settings. The guidance applies to such schools in their entirety, even if they provide services for younger or older students. Guidance for child care settings and institutions of higher education will be addressed in separate documents. Book excerpt: The presence of turbulence in multiple areas of our society--food, fuel, and finances-being but three critical areas presently being impacted means that long-held assumptions are no longer true, that the past is not prologue, and that the future is not clear. And enter into this unstable present the discipline of evaluation-a discipline formed and shaped in the past fifty years of stability, little turbulence, and strong assumptions that everything will go according to plan. If things do not go well, it is because of either a poor theory of change on how to bring about positive outcomes, or weak efforts at implementation. It is not because of the stormy present upsetting our quiet past. As it is, conventional evaluation behavior and beliefs are ill suited for these times. The transformational nature of the 'Arab Spring' is just one arena in which it is clear that a business as usual approach to evaluation is entirely inappropriate. The papers in this volume are from the 2011 Global Assembly of the International Development Evaluation Association (IDEAS). Nearly 350 development evaluators from eighty-five countries came together in Amman, Jordan to discuss and analyze the consequences of turbulence on evaluation. The intent of these papers is to systematically assess what changes have come during this time of turbulence and how these changes are impacting the craft of development evaluation. To be clear: this book is not about how to assess the impacts of crises on development and on people's lives. It is about the meaning of a changed world and changed assumptions on the concepts and methods used in evaluation.

This is a profound pediatric health and environmental justice issue that must not be set aside. Halfon et al. (2012) affirm that up to 30% of minors schooled in developed countries may be chronically ill. In Australia, a whole of about 950 kids and teenagers are diagnosed with cancer (leukaemia, lymphoma or brain/spinal cord tumours) every year; an 80% of them will be survivors (Ronald McDonald House Charities Australia, 2011). In fact, to many of those children who are chronically ill, the hospital is a second home. In opinion of Calf (1990), children who are absent from home schools for some time, find the fact of returning to them as very challenging in terms of educational, social, emotional and psychological readaptations. Among other things, that is because insignificant factors to adults can become a whole world in the minds of children. Thus, the service provided by Hospital Schools, that is to say, Schools located inside the Hospitals to service sick children during their periods of hospitalization, are heading to give the patients happy and positive memories of these situations as much as possible, as well as continuity of their academic backgrounds and schoolings.In addition, diverse physical abilities' kids (together with ill children) who become adults, often get sedentary jobs where the academic skills are highly required, so the educational programs during periods of chronic illness with their consequent recurrent hospital admissions are vital to help inserting them in the social contexts nowadays. With regards to the cultural factors, some western and non-western communities can even find that diverse physical abilities are shameful, a decay of masculinity or a curse for the kid. In these cases schools can also act as reducers of prejudices and cognitive bias.The analysis here presented -divided into several parts- is the result of two facts: the completion of a Ph. D. in Education focused on Hospital Schools in Spain, Sweden and Argentina, and also the completion of a postdoctoral research stay at the University of Sydney (Australia) by the end of the 2012 academic year.As we have concluded through the Ph. D. Thesis (García, 2012), Hospital Schools do represent an insufficient number in the countries pre- and post-doctorally visited (Spain, Sweden, Argentina, South Africa, Australia, Germany, Italy and Japan) to respond the hospitalized children's needs, sometimes being just set up in a symbolical way that doesn't allow them to properly service every child in its individuality. The research that we now introduce follows an evaluative methodology, due to which we have based the project mostly on interviews to educational professionals from this track in New South Wales, along with documental analysis of Hospital Schools' reports and brochures as well as non-systematic observation.This research intends to protect and fight for the Human Right to Education by spreading the knowledge and understanding of the enormous and beautiful work that the Hospital Schools do everyday in every country. We don't aim here at pointing out whatever negative aspects of the schools, but at diffusing how important this education is for the children, for the hospitals and for all of us as human beings. We continue at claiming for the institutionalization of Hospital Schools not as symbolic spaces, but as proper schools inside hospitals (with resources similar to those from the schools outside), because where there is a child - there has to be a well-equipped and good quality school (UN, 1948; UN/ECOSOC, 1966; UNICEF, 1989; UNESCO-EFA, 2000).
