The church was found on the fourteenth century and contains archives with documents dated since its foundation. Thanks to the archpriest Don Calogero la Placa, I found there documents of my ancestors back to the year 1570. Churches like the Saint Peter and Paul of Petralia Soprana are awaiting to be discovered by the world’s tourists in most small and big towns of Sicily; and so are innumerable masterpieces of Sicilian archeology, architectures, arts, literature, folklore, and not to be forgotten, there awaiting are the hospitality and cuisine of the Sicilian people.

This interest is due in part to his colorful life and provocative personality, but he is also remembered for devising Latin scientific names for more plants than any other naturalist who ever lived--and a great number in the animal kingdom, as well. This passion for nomenclature has kept his name memorable (some would say notorious) among naturalists. Yet his taxonomic writings made up only a part of his extensive oeuvre. Rafinesque's restless mind ranged over areas of inquiry from archaeology to zoology. His published writings in these fields have been difficult to lay hands on and have never been collected. Among such essays now gathered into this volume, two were unavailable until 1949, six were listed only in 1982 and four remained unknown until 2001. The recovery and reprinting of these 12 contributions help to broaden the understanding of his achievements over a lifetime. They are part of a literary tradition with mid-twentieth century roots that began to develop, in earnest, in the late 1970s and early 1980s. During those decades, a number of Italian American women, such as Helen Barolini, began to publish books that depicted their perspectives on life through the critical lenses of gender, class, and ethnicity. At the end of the twentieth century, this literature finally blossomed into a fully fledged cultural movement that also took into account issues of sexuality, age, illness, and familial and societal abuse. Writing with an Accent takes a look at this vibrant literary movement by discussing those first writers of the 1970s and 1980s as well as later authors. At the center of Edvige Giunta s Writing with an Accent is the literal notion of accent, the marker of linguistic and cultural difference that separates and identifies recent immigrants to the United States. In this study, an accent symbolically embodies the differences and creative strategies through which contemporary Italian American women writers engage Italian American culture in works of fiction, poetry, and memoir. Giunta also looks at the links between the literature and art, music, film, and video produced by contemporary Italian American women. The book is about two nearly identical bi-racial brothers, their father is a black American. One brother is an black-Sicilian, born and raised in Sicily by his Sicilian mother and a Mafiosi member. The other brother, Senator Joseph Cicero, is a black Italian-American, a son of an Italian-American woman. U.S. Senator Cicero became president on November 4, 2008 and was inaugurated on the 20th day of January, 2009. He was sworn in as the 44th president of the United States of America, becoming the first black Italian-American to assume the position in the White House. The New York agents and my Italian co-workers said that I wouldn’t live to see an black American elected to become a president in the United States and I, Mr. G., truly believed them. They rejected my book in the spring of 2005 because of having unusual characters, one, an black American president and two, a mafia member. I was told that the American people wouldn’t believe that my fictional story was true because there never was and there will never be a U.S. black American president. Italian members of the Italian and Sicilian Cosa Nostras Mafiosi, from the Bronx to Kenosha-Wisconsin said to me that my character, the Sicilian could not have been a member of the mafia because he has black blood following through his veins, he wasn’t born whole. My readers tell me that Joseph Cicero, my fictional black American-Italian character resembles President Barack Obama, the 44th president of the United States of America. I started writing this book, “Born Whole” in 1998 it was finished on January 2004. I am now 72 years old.
