Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty-two percent of Chinese Americans report having no religious affiliation, making them the least religiously-identified ethnic group in the United States. But that statistic obscures a much more complex reality. Family Sacrifices reveals that Chinese Americans employ familism, not religion, as the primary narrative by which they find meaning, identity, and belonging. As a transpacific lived tradition, Chinese American familism prioritizes family above other commitments and has roots in Chinese Popular Religion and Confucianism. The spiritual and ethical systems of China emphasize practicing rituals and cultivating virtue, whereas American religious research usually focuses on belief in the supernatural or belonging to a religious tradition. To address this gap in understanding, Family Sacrifices introduces the concept of liyi, translated as ritual propriety and righteous relations. Re-appropriated from its original Chinese usage, liyi offers a new way of understanding Chinese religion and a new lens for understanding the emergence of religious "nones" in the United States. The first book based on national survey data on Asian American religious practices, Family Sacrifices is a seminal text on the fastest-growing racial group in the United States.

Book The Pecking Order

Download or read book The Pecking Order written by Dalton Conley and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2009-02-25 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The family is our haven, the place where we all start off on equal footing — or so we like to think. But if that’s the case, why do so many siblings often diverge widely in social status, wealth, and education? In this groundbreaking and meticulously researched book, acclaimed sociologist Dalton Conley shatters our notions of how our childhoods affect us, and why we become who we are. Economic and social inequality among adult siblings is not the exception, Conley asserts, but the norm: over half of all inequality is within families, not between them. And it is each family’s own “pecking order” that helps to foster such disparities. Moving beyond traditionally accepted theories such as birth order or genetics to explain family dynamics, Conley instead draws upon three major studies to explore the impact of larger social forces that shape each family and the individuals within it. From Bill and Roger Clinton to the stories of hundreds of average Americans, here we are introduced to an America where class identity is ever changing and where siblings cannot necessarily follow the same paths. This is a book that will forever alter our idea of family.

Book In Their Own Words

Download or read book In Their Own Words written by C. Christine Fair and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-15 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This path-breaking volume reveals a little-known aspect of how Lashkar-e-Tayyaba, a jihadist terrorist group, functions in Pakistan and beyond by translating and commenting upon a range of publications produced and disseminated by Dar-ul-Andlus, the publishing wing of LeT. Only a fraction of LeT's cadres ever see battle: most of them are despatched on nation-wide "prozelytising" (dawa) missions to convert Pakistanis to their particular interpretation of Islam, in support of which LeT has developed a sophisticated propagandist literature. This canon of Islamist texts is the most popular and potent weapon in LeT's arsenal, and its scrutiny affords insights into how and who the group recruits; LeT's justification for jihad; its vision of itself in global and regional politics; the enemies LeT identifies and the allies it cultivates; and how and where it conducts its operations. Particular attention is paid to the role that LeT assigns to women by examining those writings which heap extravagant praise upon the mothers of aspirant jihadis, who bless their operations and martyrdom. It is only by understanding LeT's domestic functions as set out in these texts that one can begin to appreciate why Pakistan so fiercely supports it, despite mounting international pressure to disband the group.

Book Six Decades of Failures

Download or read book Six Decades of Failures written by Chandan Lahiri and published by Chandan Lahiri. This book was released on 2022-11-03 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of my life. I am no celebrity, even though a lot of people are to their kith and kin (Am I? I wonder). I am not someone who people will or should look up to or maybe even emulate. This book is about looking back at my life, remembering the choices I have made, and their ramifications. Have these years been full of failures, or have they been foundations on which the pillar of success was or could have been built. Was the pillar finally built? Is this book an autobiography? Is it just a rambling of a person who is remembering the milestone moments of his life? Is it a series of confessions? Is it a way to pen down my life’s journey in anticipation of taking that final flight to the other world? I leave it to you to decide. All I can hope for is that you have a good time going through these pages. If I can manage to provide some topics of conversations, going beyond the confines of just my own life, about various aspects that one might be confronted with, how to conduct oneself, it would all have been worth it.

Determined to remedy the situation, Elizabeth decides to stay with her aunt in London, thereby forcing the truth of Jane's circumstances to rise to the surface. It is in London that Elizabeth meets Fitzwilliam Darcy and his younger brother, a rake of a man who is more interested in dalliances with women than in maintaining the small estate bequeathed upon him by his father. Despite Darcy's great efforts, his brother simply refuses to listen to reason and curb his excesses, leaving Darcy at a loss concerning how to proceed. Because both Elizabeth and Darcy are so focused on their siblings, neither expects to catch the other's eye. But as they spend more time together, they find themselves to be willing allies and perhaps even something more. If they work together, is it possible to ensure that all parties involved will achieve happiness? Or will the sacrifice of Elizabeth's sister proceed, causing sorrow to enshroud the future and forever banishing any hopes for marital bliss?

Book Sociobiology Beyond Nature nurture

Download or read book Sociobiology Beyond Nature nurture written by George W Barlow and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-26 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To most biologists, sociobiology represents the concept of strict Darwinian individual selection married to an analytical application of ecological principles and brought to bear on social behavior in an unusually exciting and productive way. Joining the biologists are a small number of social scientists. But there are radically divergent views as to how the field should be delimited, and sociobiology is one of the most widely discussed fields in biology and anthropology today. The symposium on which this book is based was arranged by a biologist and an anthropologist. The participants, leaders in their fields, ably present contrasting and responsible views on current issues. This is the first collection of essays on sociobiology in which opposing views are aired. It is an exciting, timely book and an important historical document.

Book Sacrifice and Moral Philosophy

Download or read book Sacrifice and Moral Philosophy written by Marcel van Ackeren and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-10 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to foster a more explicit and direct discussion of the concept of sacrifice and its importance in moral philosophy. Acts of self-sacrifice have a special place in our moral lives. We admire and celebrate those who give up their lives so that others may live. Despite this important role that sacrifice plays in our moral thinking, moral philosophers have had surprisingly little to say about the nature of sacrifice. This lack of attention to the nature of sacrifice is particularly important given that sacrifice also has an important role to play in several key debates in moral philosophy. The chapters in this volume make an important contribution to our understanding of sacrifice in three areas. The first part of the book investigates the nature of sacrifice. The next group of chapters investigates the role of sacrifice in moral philosophy. Three of these pieces investigate the role of sacrifice in our moral lives generally, while two investigate the role of sacrifice in relation to particular moral theories. The final two chapters investigate the value of sacrifice in relation to political and theological issues. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of Philosophical Studies.
