Download or read book The Selected Short Stories of Paul Laurence Dunbar written by Paul Laurence Dunbar and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2022-02-08 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872–1906) was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet during the start of the 20th century. Born to ex-slave parents, Dunbar began writing at a very early age and had published his first poems by the age of 16 in a local newspaper. Much of his work was written in the "African-American Vernacular" associated with the antebellum South, although he also employed conventional English in his novels and poems. Dunbar was among the first African-American writers to garner international acclaim for their work. This volume contains a collection of Dunbar's best short stories, originally published in three books. “Folks from Dixie” (1898) comprises 12 stories and was Dunbar's first collection, as well as the first volume of short stories ever published in the United States by an African American. “The Strength of Gideon and Other Stories” (1899) was Dunbar's second collection, including 20 short stories. Originally published in 1904, “The Heart of Happy Hollow” contains sixteen short stories that explore African American life post-Civil War. A fantastic collection of powerful tales that offer a unique glimpse into the lives of African Americans at the turn of the century. Other notable works by this author include: “Oak and Ivy” (1892), “Majors and Minors” (1896), and “Lyrics of Lowly Life” (1896). Read & Co. Classics is proudly publishing this brand new collection of classic short stories now complete with a specially-commissioned new biography of the author and original illustrations by E. W. Kemble.

Book excerpt: Katherine Mansfield is one of the greatest names in world literature in the genre of short stories. Early influenced by the impressionism of Russian writer Anton Chekhov, Mansfield developed her own modernist narrative style that has had a significant influence on all subsequent short story art. Her stories are driven by psychological conflicts, depicted with a subtlety and a poetic skewness that give them a life beyond the conventions of language. This book collects no fewer than 75 of Mansfield’s short stories. KATHERINE MANSFIELD, actually Kathleen Mansfield Beauchamp (later Murry), was born in 1888 in Wellington, New Zealand, and died in 1923 as a result of her pulmonary tuberculosis at a hospital near Fontainebleau, France. Mansfield left her homeland at the age of 19 and moved to Europe. In London, she established herself as a writer and became friends with Virginia Woolf and D.H. Lawrence. Rumour has it that the latter infected her with the lung disease that became her demise, at the young age of 35.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ever-increasing integration of technology and the human body is attracting attention from religious, business, and political leaders around the world, and the topic promises to be a significant social issue in the 21st century. In Mediating the Human Body: Technology, Communication, and Fashion, editors Leopoldina Fortunati, James E. Katz, and Raimonda Riccini bring together a thoughtful group of leading international scholars and analysts to explore the effects of new technologies on human beings. They focus specifically on the intersection of new communication technologies and the body, and offer novel insights based on recent theoretical progress and current research on new interpersonal technology. Through literary analysis, historical comparisons, analytical reports, and speculative interpretations, the contributors to this volume seek to understand the experience of the body as it is mediated among competing forces and intellectual domains. Arising from The Human Body Between Technologies, Communication and Fashion symposium held in Milan, Italy, contributions cover a wide array of topics and offer varied perspectives on how communication technologies are assimilated into people's lives, bodies, and homes, and thus become part of individuals' self-images and social relationships. From this multidisciplinary, multi-national base, the volume illuminates the sense and dimension of this interpenetration between body and technology. In its broad scope, the topics range from the wellsprings of consciousness to the use of technology as a fashion statement. Bringing together scholarship from a variety of disciplines, including communication, medicine, technology, and human-computer interaction, this distinctive anthology will provide new insights to scholars and advanced students exploring body-technology intersections and the attendant implications. Mediating the Human Body offers a unique contribution to future discussions, and will be relevant to continuing study and research in communication and technology, human-computer interaction, gender studies, social psychology, and design.
