Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fact is, some books simply need to exist. Burma: The Cookbook is one of these. Burma is culturally rich and complex in many ways, but perhaps nowhere more than in its extraordinary food culture. It's at the crossroads between the food of the great Indian subcontinent (to its west) and the food of Southeast Asia (to its east), with a dash of Chinese influence (from the north), making it an amazing place in-between. With simple recipes for food that manages to be elegant and earthy at the same time, plus stories of a place and a people that inspired Rudyard Kipling, Somerset Maugham, and George Orwell, this may be Duguid's most enchanting cookbook yet. The book features photographs throughout--of the finished dishes, of people, of a hauntingly beautiful land--as well as travel tips, a history of Burma, extensive glossaries, and a bibliography.

Book State and Society in Modern Rangoon

Download or read book State and Society in Modern Rangoon written by Donald M. Seekins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-17 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While most of Asia’s major cities are increasingly homogenized by rapid economic growth and cultural globalization, Rangoon, which is Burma’s former capital and largest city, still bears the imprint of a unique and often turbulent history. It is the site of the Shwedagon Pagoda, a focus of Buddhist pilgrimage and devotion since the early second millennium C.E. that continues to play a major role in national life. In 1852, the British occupied Rangoon and made it their colonial capital, building a modern port and administrative center based on western designs. It became the capital of independent Burma in 1948, but in 2005 the State Peace and Development Council military junta established a new, heavily fortified capital at Naypyidaw, 320 kilometers north of the old capital. A major motive for the capital relocation was the regime’s desire to put distance between itself and Rangoon’s historically restive population. Reacting to the huge anti-government demonstrations of "Democracy Summer" in 1988, the new military regime used massive violence to pacify the city and sought to transform it in line with its supreme goal of state security. However, the "Saffron Revolution" of September 2007 showed that Rangoon’s traditions of resistance reaching back to the colonial era are still very much alive.

Book A Journey in Time

Download or read book A Journey in Time written by Wai Wai Myaing and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Journey in Time is a nostalgic journey into the lives of a Burmese family during a period of intense political strife and turmoil. Since Burma lost its royalty and independence after the Anglo Burmese Wars in 1886, the fight for freedom never really ceased for its people. Burmese Nationalists, like Bogyoke Aung San, seize the opportunity to regain independence with the Japanese invasion of British Burma during World War II. Nonetheless, an oasis of peace is enjoyed by its people with the establishment of the rule of law in the country. Burma enters the world stage as the biggest exporter of rice, and its rich resources are developed on an unprecedented scale. Journey in Time chronicles this period in the lives of the Myaing family and their friends as it highlights the fascinating cultural and personal details that make them unique and interesting. Author Wai Wai Myaing confidently brings her loved ones to life as she describes their simple joys, aspirations, the worries that beset them, and the gentle Buddhist religion that guides them through their lives with dignity and grace.
