Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a thousand years, the Śūraṅgama Sūtra has been held in high regard in the Mahāyāna Buddhist countries of East and Southeast Asia and has been as popular as the Lotus, Heart, and Diamond Sūtras. Its wealth of theoretical and practical instruction in living a spiritual life often made it the first major text studied by newly ordained monks, particularly in the Chan tradition. This Sutra is regarded as a complete and practical manual for spiritual practice that will lead to enlightenment. It provides instruction on understanding one’s own Buddha-nature, the potential within every being for becoming a Buddha. The Sutra explains how and why this nature is hidden and how we can uncover it and recognize it as our own true mind. The Sutra also explains why personal integrity and purity of conduct are prerequisites for spiritual awakening. It presents the principles of meditation, and provides guidelines for discerning correct practices from those which deviate into wrong ones. It explains how our own intentional acts, whether physical, verbal, or mental, result in karmic experiences, including rebirths into various levels of being, both human and non-human. At the heart of the Sūtra is the Śūraṅgama Mantra. The Sutra promises that the practice of reciting this mantra, in the context of the other practices taught in the Sutra, can successfully eliminate internal or external obstacles that block the path of spiritual progress

The scarlet Lama clothes and the criss-crossing scars on his bald head make him look extra scary. He looked around and found that when no one was with Xuanfei, there was an incredible expression on his face. This is a deserted grassland, and he really can't understand why a seven-or eight-year-old child will appear here.

Book excerpt: The Heroes Spell is the Surangama Mantra from the Surangama Sutra. This is the most powerful mantra used in daily morning services around the world. It is most powerful because it allows you to transform your mind to meet your expectations. Mind training begins with this the longest of mantras and now it's in English to inspire you. I hope other translators will take this and put it into other languages, thus creating merit. The translation is based upon the Chinese text from the Taisho Edition of the Mahayana Tripitaka in Chinese: T19n0945 da fo dingshou lengyan shen zhou - Great Buddha Highest Leading Heroes Spirit Spell. The myth is one version only is right, there has always been more than one version. For a starting point the Taisho Edition is considered the most comprehensive collection of Mahayana, but there are versions of same mantra in different places. Variation are common in Buddhist Sutras. There are 9 versions of this mantra given 7 in English 2 in Chinese. This is the first time this commentary is published. The benefit from knowing different versions is one of convenience and affinity, you won't know which you prefer until you read them all. There is a feminine version for women included.
