Book excerpt: From undercover robots to shape shifting soldiers, the twenty-one stories in this wide-ranging anthology explore what happens when the mask comes off. We all wear masks, whether they are the literal costumes of superheroes and bank robbers or the metaphorical shrouds that obscure our real selves. Unmaksed explores these attempts to conceal, the mysteries beneath, and the price we pay when they’re stripped away. Authors ask what happens when your secret identity is revealed. When the monster is unleashed. When the superhero’s child has no power. When Death himself is caught unawares. Here are twenty-one tales of speculation and fantasy that center on magical masks, gas masks, death masks, superheroes, secret identities, disguised robots, alien symbionts, a Napoleonic thief, a swindling demon, and even a hidden clown.

Book excerpt: A new account of tragedy and its fundamental position in Western culture In this compelling account, eminent literary critic Terry Eagleton explores the nuances of tragedy in Western culture—from literature and politics to philosophy and theater. Eagleton covers a vast array of thinkers and practitioners, including Nietzsche, Walter Benjamin, and Slavoj Žižek, as well as key figures in theater, from Sophocles and Aeschylus to Shakespeare and Ibsen. Eagleton examines the political nature of tragedy, looking closely at its connection with periods of historical transition. The dramatic form originated not as a meditation on the human condition, but at moments of political engagement, when civilizations struggled with the conflicts that beset them. Tragedy, Eagleton demonstrates, is fundamental to human experience and culture.

Book excerpt: A panel of experts highlight the problems with all major claims of the official account of the 9/11 attacks. Many Americans have been embarrassed by the Trump presidency. But Americans should also be embarrassed by the fact that this country's foreign policy since 2001, which has resulted in millions of deaths, has been based on a complex deception. 9/11 Unmasked is the result of a six-year investigation by an international review panel, which has provided 51 points illustrating the problematic status of all the major claims in the official account of the 9/11 attacks, some of which are obviously false. Most dramatically, the official account of the destruction of the Twin Towers and World Trade Center 7 could not possibly be true, unless the laws of physics were suspended that day. But other claims made by the official account—including the claims that the 9/11 planes were taken over by al-Qaeda hijackers, that one of those hijackers flew his plane into the Pentagon, and that passengers on the planes telephoned people on the ground—are also demonstrably false. The book reports only points about which the panel reached consensus by using the “best-evidence” consensus model employed in medical research. The panel is composed of experts about 9/11 from many disciplines, including physics, chemistry, structural engineering, aeronautical engineering, and jurisprudence. Book excerpt: "I was born into this world unwanted. I spent the first hours of my life unloved. I spent the first eighteen years of my life with the partents who tried to shelter me from the harsh reality of my existence. But you can't un-write a sad story if the ending is literally written all over your face. So I moved out and now I hide. I have a night job that pays the bills. Every night, I put on my mask and walk to work. Then one night, I hear and see something that will change my purpose in life - forever: a murder that will bring him to me. He says he wants to protect me. And, through a series of events I can't fully make sense of, I find myself believing him. But our nightly visits are always cloaked in darkness. I don't know his face and he will never know mine." -- Back cover

Book Unprecedented Power

Download or read book Unprecedented Power written by Steven Fenberg and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2013-12-06 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this poignant and timely biography, Unprecedented Power: Jesse Jones, Capitalism and the Common Good shows how the Reconstruction Finance Corporation (RFC) saved the United States economy during the Great Depression and militarized industry in time to win World War II. RFC strategies and Jesse Jones’s approaches can be adapted now to address the impacts of the new coronavirus and climate change. President Herbert Hoover had established the RFC in 1932 to make loans to banks, railroads and insurance companies and appointed Jesse Jones—Houston’s preeminent developer and a former finance chair of the Democratic National Committee—to the bi-partisan board. With clear implications today, Jones complained the RFC was slow and a year late and said if it had judiciously loaned five to seven billion dollars in 1931 and ’32, economic collapse would have been prevented. Soon after his inauguration, President Franklin Roosevelt supercharged the RFC, made Jones chair and the government agency began buying preferred stock in banks to stabilize and help them lend again. Jones knew capital rather than debt was needed to save the banks and revive the flow of credit, just as it was when the program was duplicated in 2008 as the Troubled Asset Relief Program, better known as TARP. Under Jones’s leadership, the RFC became the largest investor in the nation and rescued banks, businesses, homes and farms; saved the railroads; rebuilt communities after environmental calamities; built bridges, dams and aqueducts across the nation; and brought electricity and appliances to rural America. The RFC helped people and saved businesses during the Great Depression through judicious lending, not spending, and remarkably returned a profit to the government and its taxpayers. As war spread, Jones and FDR shifted the RFC’s focus from domestic economics to global defense. In its second cover story about Jones, TIME magazine reported, “In all the U.S. today there is only one man whose power is greater: Franklin Roosevelt … The President knows Congress will give more to Jones without debate than he can get after a fight … Emperor Jones is the greatest lender of all time.” Accordingly, after Germany’s European victories, Congress on June 25, 1940, gave Jones and the RFC the authority to build, buy and lease plants to develop and manufacture metals, ships, airplanes, tanks and guns; to train aviators; and, with FDR’s approval, to do anything required to arm the Allied Forces. Almost half of its outsized investments went to corporations to help convert their production to war-time needs. One of its largest new plants—the Dodge-Chicago plant—covered 145 acres and took in raw metal at one end and produced finished airplane engines at the other. Like all its new factories, the plant was built and owned by the federal government’s RFC, leased to corporations to operate and sold to private interests after the war. Likewise, coordinated national large-scale efforts and government investments can be made to address today’s daunting challenges. Unprecedented Power dramatically describes how Jesse Jones and the RFC used every option to save life, democracy and capitalism during two of the 20th century’s most threatening events. Unprecedented Power provides models for today by looking at successes from the past.

Book excerpt: Aspen-- the American Riviera-- where the rich and the beautiful go to play. Quiet streets, breathtaking mountains, and one of the lowest crime rates in America. But that's about to change. Real estate speculator Max Shapiro has been cleaning the San Francisco mob's money for three decades. Then the hammer drops-- he's dying of cancer and is on borrowed time. Resentful of the mob's hold and not wishing to die with an IV hose in his arm, Max tells the mob he isn't paying any more tribute, hoping they'll send someone to kill him. While vacationing in Aspen, however, Max gets a call from his doctor. Good news. Max isn't dying after all. But it's too late to call off the mob's killers. Max's only hope is the enigmatic Cole Springer-- an ex-Secret Service agent with a penchant for creative thinking-- broke and in danger of losing his Aspen nightclub. Shapiro needs a bodyguard and Springer needs money, so they cut a protection deal. Enter Gerry "Knucks" Nugent, a cerebral and deadly hit man in the midst of a midlife crisis who has been sent to kill Shapiro. A mob boss dies in 'Frisco, there is a struggle for power, and an emergency cache of three million dollars ends up in the hands of Nicky Tortino, a merciless Bay Area crime lord. The shift in the underworld command sends shock waves rippling across the western United States, affecting even Shapiro and Nugent. Meanwhile, Springer's active mind runs to larger themes than merely protecting Shapiro, and he begins to formulate a scheme to save Shapiro and get his hands on the three million. Springer's scam depends upon recruiting Nugent, and Nugent is widely feared-- even by his ruthless bosses on the West Coast. Bay Area underboss Nicky Tortino travels to Aspen to get Shapiro to launder the three million, and also to have both Springer and Shapiro killed. The law closes in and Springer is running out of time and options. Beset on all sides, Springer designs an elaborate sting to extricate Shapiro and himself from the deadly web that has formed around them. But can he trust Nugent?
