Book excerpt: Wind tunnel tests have been conducted on a shrouded propeller model with four variable pitch blades operating within a 0.50 chord/diameter ratio shroud and having a 0.4 hub/tip diameter ratio centerbody. The shroud had provisions for changing the inlet configuration from a streamlined or high-speed shape to a flared or bellmouth shape and for mounting either a diffused or nondiffused exit. Seven exit vanes designed to remove the rotational component of jet velocity at design conditions were installed. The design of the propeller blades was identical to the design of the blades used in a model having a 0.3 hub/tip dia eter ratio centerbody. A comparison of the test data from these two models shows the effect of centerbody size on shrouded propeller performance. Performance of the model was measured throughout a range of advance ratios from zero to 2.2 at several blade pitch settings and angles of attack between zero and 90 degrees. Results are presented in the form of force and moment coefficients varying with power coefficient for forward flight conditions and with propeller rotation speed and static disc loading at zero speed conditions. Book excerpt: Wind tunnel tests were conducted on a shrouded propeller model in which the propeller diameter was varied for the purpose of measuring the effects of tip to shroud clearance. The basic model tested contained a four-bladed variable pitch propeller operating within a 0.50 chord/diameter ratio shroud. To assist in studying the effect of annulus area on tip clearance, two models having 0.30 and 0.40 hub/tip diameter ratio centerbodies were tested over roughly the same range of propeller tip clearances. Performance of the models was measured throughout a range of advance ratios from zero to roughly 2.20 at several propeller blade pitch settings at zero angle of attack only. Results are presented in the form of force and power coefficients and efficiency varying with propeller tip clearance and rotational speed for forward and static flight conditions. (Author).

THE MAJOR AXIS OF THE ELLIPSE WAS PARALLEL TO THE MODEL PITCHING AXIS. THE TRANSITION FROM CIRCULAR TO ELLIPTICAL CROSSSECTION WAS ACHIEVED WITH NO CHANGE IN CROSSSECTIONAL AREAS SO THAT THIS SHROUD CAN BE CONSIDERED AS BEING NON-DIFFUSED. A COMPARISON MODEL WITH A CONFIGURATION IDENTICAL TO THE ABOVE MODEL EXCEPT FOR A CIRCULAR SHROUD EXIT WAS ALSO TESTED. PERFORMANCE OF BOTH MODELS WAS MEASURED THROUGHOUT AN ADVANCE RATIO RANGE FROM ZERO TO ROUGHLY 2.5 AT SEVERAL BLADE PITCH ANGLES AND AT ANGLES OF ATTACK TO 90 DEGREES. A COMPARISON OF THE PERFORMANCE OF THE TWO MODELS INDICATES THAT THE CIRCULAR EXIT MODEL IS SUPERIOR TO THE ELLIPTICAL EXIT MODEL.

Pressure surveys were made both upstream and downstream of the plane of a 4-bladed and a 6-bladed variable pitch propeller. The model configuration consisted of a 0.50 chord/diameter ratio shroud which had provisions for changing the inlet configuration from a streamlined or high speed shape to a bellmouth shape and changing the exit configuration from a non-diffused to a diffused exit. The centerbody of the model was constant at 30% of the shroud inner diameter. Pressure variations were recorded throughout a range of advance ratios from zero to 2.0 at three propeller pitch angles and model angles of attack from zero to 90 degrees. (Author).
