Download or read book Straight Acting written by Will Tosh and published by Seal Press. This book was released on 2024-09-17 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dazzling and "highly readable" (Guardian) portrait of Shakespeare as a young artist, revealing how his rich and complex queer life informed the plays and poems we treasure today “Was Shakespeare gay?” For years the question has sent experts and fans into a tailspin of confusion. But as scholar Will Tosh argues, this debate misses the point: sex, intimacy, and identity in Elizabethan England were infinitely more complex—and queer—than we have been taught. In this incisive biography, Tosh reveals William Shakespeare as a queer artist who drew on his society’s nuanced understanding of gender and sexuality to create some of English literature’s richest works. During Shakespeare’s time, same-sex desire was repressed and punished by the Church and state, but it was also articulated and sustained by institutions across England. Moving through the queer spaces of Shakespeare’s life—his Stratford schoolroom, smoky London taverns and playhouses, the royal court—Tosh shows how strongly Shakespeare’s early work was influenced by the queer culture of the time, much of it totally integrated into mainstream society. He also uncovers the surprising reason why Shakespeare veered away from his early work’s gender-bending homoeroticism. Offering a subversive sketch of Elizabethan England, Straight Acting uncovers Shakespeare as one of history’s great queer artists and completely reshapes the way we understand his life and times.

Download or read book The Significance and Social Impact of Quarrying in Shropshire in the 19th and 20th Centuries written by Robert S. Galloway and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-06-19 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quarrying is one of the oldest industries known to man, as, from early times, people have been making items from stone. However, the quarrying industry is only briefly mentioned in most archaeological and historical records, with some books only giving a passing account of this activity. This book alters this and provides an in-depth analysis of this important industry, not only with regards to Shropshire, but the whole country. Many structures in Shropshire and various parts of the country are constructed from stone quarried from this large county. This book shows that quarries are not just holes or scars on the landscape, highlighting the machinery used in extracting and processing the quarried minerals.
Download or read book Religion Gender and Industry written by Peter S Forsaith and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2012-05-31 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Questions have been raised in recent decades about the place of women in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, in church and society during a time of vast industrial change. These topics are broad, but can be seen in microcosm in one small area of the English Midlands: the parish of Madeley, Shropshire, in which Coalbrookdale became synonymous with the industrial age. Here, the evangelical Methodist clergyman John Fletcher (1729-1785) ministered between 1760 and 1785, among a population including Roman Catholics and Quakers, as well as people indifferent to religion. For nearly sixty years after his death, two women, Fletcher's widow and later her protege, had virtual charge of the parish, which became one of the last examples of Methodism within the Church of England. Through examining this specific locality, with its potential for religious tension and great social significance, this multidisciplinary collection of essays engages with developing areas of research. In addition to furthering knowledge of Madeley parish and its relation to larger themes of religion, gender and industry in eighteenth-century Britain, the impact of the Fletchers in nineteenth-century American Methodism is examined.

Download or read book England s Thousand Best Churches written by Simon Jenkins and published by Penguin Global. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simon Jenkins has travelled the length and breadth of England to select his thousand best churches. Organised by county, each church is described - often with delightful asides - and given a star-rating from one to five. All of the county sections are prefaced by a map locating each church, and lavishly illustrated with colour photos from the Country Life archive. Jenkins contends that these churches house a gallery of vernacular art without equal in the world. Here, he brings that museum to public attention.
