Book excerpt: A stroke of the pen and history is changed. In 1938, British prime minister Neville Chamberlain, determined to avoid war, signed the Munich Accord, ceding part of Czechoslovakia to Hitler. But the following spring, Hitler snatched the rest of that country, and England, after a fatal act of appeasement, was fighting a war for which it was not prepared. Now, in this thrilling alternate history, another scenario is played out: What if Chamberlain had not signed the accord? In this action-packed chronicle of the war that might have been, Harry Turtledove uses dozens of points of view to tell the story: from American marines serving in Japanese-occupied China and ragtag volunteers fighting in the Abraham Lincoln Battalion in Spain to an American woman desperately trying to escape Nazi-occupied territory—and witnessing the war from within the belly of the beast. A tale of powerful leaders and ordinary people, at once brilliantly imaginative and hugely entertaining, Hitler’s War captures the beginning of a very different World War II—with a very different fate for our world today. BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Harry Turtledove's The War that Came Early: West and East.

Book excerpt: From the beaches of Guadalcanal, United States Marines could look North towards a tiny island 29 miles away. It was Tulagi, the protective flank for the American fighting forces pitted against the Japanese. Between these two islands were fought some of the bloodiest and most costly naval battles of World War II. In October of 1942, a naval skirmish occurred which changed the life of John Lowery forever. The story begins 30 years after the war. On his boat, Tulagi, John keeps retreating to the steaming heat of the marshes of "Down East" North Carolina. There, he repeatedly agonizes over an act of cowardice that he committed one black night while under attack in the "slot." On one of these expeditions, he is brutally brought back to reality when he discovers the decomposing corpse of a murdered man. With the aid of three friends (the "Committee"), John sets out to solve the murder. While not far from where John lives, another man is also struggling with his conscience. He is Rached Bussman, a brilliant black defense lawyer, who works for the "Cartel." These are the South American drug lords who control the flow of drugs into the Mideastern states through the marshy coastal lands of North Carolina. Inexorably, these two men are driven toward each other. Each finds himself struggling to protect the ones he loves from evil and crazed Colonel Sutter and his murderous henchman, Ghent. The story is set in the locale of the Neuse River, where I live. It is fiction, based in part on real events and folklore. The character of each individual is real. Their names have been changed; their true identities are only thinly veiled. This book represents, in no small way, my perception of America and its people. The men who make up the "Committee" have been friends or patients of mine over a period of 31 years of medical practice. The Marine on Guadalcanal was Marlin Ritzel. His name was not changed. He did survive the war.

Book Dunkirk Nine Days That Saved An Army

Download or read book Dunkirk Nine Days That Saved An Army written by John Grehan and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2018-03-30 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The epic of Dunkirk has been told many times, but the numerous accounts from surviving soldiers and sailors were often a blur of fear and fighting with the days mingling into each other, leaving what is, at times, a confusing picture. In this book, adopting a day by day approach, the author provides a clear portrayal of the unfolding drama on the perimeter around Dunkirk, in the port itself and along the beaches to La Panne and the Belgian border.Reports from many of the captains of the vessels which took part in the great evacuation were submitted to the Admiralty immediately after the conclusion of Operation Dynamo. With access to these, and supported by the various records maintained by the Army and RAF, the author has been able to finally piece together the movements and actions of the many of the squadrons, units and ships involved. With the Admiralty reports and a mass of other firsthand accounts, many of which have never been published before, the true tale of the heroism of the rescued and the rescuers is laid bare. Operation Dynamo saw civilian volunteers and Royal Navy personnel manning every type of craft from the antiaircraft cruiser HMS Calcutta to the cockle boats of the Thames Estuary. The accounts of the men who crewed these vessels tell of being bombed and strafed by the Luftwaffe or shelled from the shore. There are stories of collisions in the dark, chaos on the beaches and tragic losses as ships went down. Similar tales are told by the men waiting on the beaches, defending the perimeter or flying in the skies overhead in a valiant effort to hold the German Army and Luftwaffe at bay.Yet this is ultimately a story, as Churchill described it, of deliverance, for against all the predictions, the BEF was saved to fight again another day. With civilians and servicemen working without respite for days and nights on end under almost continual attack to rescue the army, the nation pulled together as never before. It truly was Britains finest hour.

Book Longshore Soldiers

    Book Details:
  • Author : Andrew Brozyna
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2012-08-20
  • ISBN : 178096594X
  • Pages : 243 pages

Download or read book Longshore Soldiers written by Andrew Brozyna and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-08-20 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Longshore Soldiers chronicles the wartime experiences of port battalion veterans, part of the US Army's Transportation Corps. This battalion, along with all others of the Corps, were responsible for ensuring military materiel was delivered to the front line, allowing the fighting to continue without delay; an essential part of the Allied war effort. Andrew Brozyna, grandson of one of the veterans, traces the stories of the veterans from training in the United States to supplying the British at El Alamein, dock work in Antwerp, supplying the beaches of Normandy as part of D-Day and finally to deactivation. While this is a subject that might not be as instantly recognizable for most military history fans, Brozyna offers a compelling narrative, packed with first-hand accounts and personal histories, of an overlooked aspect of the Second World War. Longshore Soldiers examines the logistics of the European theatre and how these veterans vitally kept the Allied armies moving as they marched into the Reich.

Book Snowdrops for a Soldier

Download or read book Snowdrops for a Soldier written by Karen J. Yates and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Snowdrops for a Soldier tells the story of Karen J. Yates’ uncle Charlie, who was tragically killed at the very end of the North Africa Campaign during the Second World War. He travelled further in his young life than he could ever have imagined, and this book, via his letters and diary, charts his progress from a small town near Manchester, to Durban, then on to Egypt. There his regiment took part in the battle of El-Alamein before chasing the German and Italian armies across nearly two thousand miles of unforgiving terrain. His letters home reflect the sacrifices both civilians and soldiers made as they worked for the war effort, before coming to an abrupt halt as Charlie paid the ultimate sacrifice, laying down his life for his country. His bravery took the form of facing up to a soldier’s harsh life, never giving in to bitterness; never complaining or grumbling. Unwilling to fall out with anyone, this friendly, peaceful man did his duty under the most trying conditions and retained his basic humanity in the midst of so much aggression, death and destruction. Like all those men who faced up to war, in all its best and worst aspects: he was a hero. Poignant yet informative, this book will appeal to those interested in family histories and more personal accounts of the Second World War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Bob and Connie were just eighteen and sixteen when they met and started walking to work together. They got to know each other well enough in the year and a half before World War II started to stay together through the uncertainties and separation of war. They married when Bob was on leave in 1945.""The two were just embarking on their adult lives when war began, dramatically changing their expectations and experiences. This is their story, or rather how two stories became one, despite the intervening six years of danger and hardship." "Connie joined the Land Army to work on a farm, while Bob went to France with the Royal Artillery. He was evacuated from Dunkirk; and then spent the rest of the war as a gunner on merchant shipping, which took him around the world and into some tight spots." "Connie's story is a fascinating account of life in and around a farm, where she was the only woman doing farm work. She became expert at driving a tractor and bulldozer, which contrasted greatly from her previous office job.""Bob's historical account tells of his travels and experiences during the war. He was attacked from the air and torpedoed by a submarine. He sailed across the Atlantic, to Iceland and around the Mediterranean, whilst serving on fishing boats, tankers and munitions ships.""Both accounts provide personal insights into public events during the war years.""Steve Orwin feels privileged to share his parents' stories. This first-time author lives in Sittingbourne, Kent.
