Book excerpt: A proven blueprint to accelerate career success and fast track into leadership roles—especially for women who are underrepresented in their fields. If you're a woman, especially a woman of color, you know this already: You face unique challenges and obstacles as you work to scale the corporate ladder. From not seeing other faces in the room that look like you to dealing with the stereotypes and (often unconscious) biases in the workplace, you may know what to do to succeed, but not how to get it done in this environment. Show Your Worth shows you how. In pages that are both inspirational and practical, Shelmina Babai Abji speaks directly to professional women—especially women of color—about how the power of being intentional and strategic can help transform the headwinds you face into much-needed tailwinds. Show Your Worth takes you on a deep dive into the 8 Intentional Strategies that will help you achieve success, including: Success: Define what success means to you Attention: Develop your Personal Success Plan Work/Life Balance: Achieve work-life balance in our disrupted world Value Creation: Overcome fear, find your voice, and contribute at your maximum capacity Growth: Seek relevant and meaningful growth Relationships: Connect meaningfully with first-line managers, peers, mentors, and sponsors Leadership Branding: Build and preserve your reputation as a leader Promotions: Be strategic about earning a promotion These Intentional Strategies are imperative for women whose confidence can be chipped away daily when they're overlooked because of negative stereotypes and biases due to differences in race, socio-economic, cultural, or academic backgrounds. Through Abji's personal experiences and the inspiring stories of other successful women who have applied these strategies in their own lives, you will come to deeply understand just how important your voice is and know that your unique value makes you a force in any room.

Book Leading with Feeling

Download or read book Leading with Feeling written by Cary Cherniss and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Tom was a young engineer employed at one of the country's largest steel companies. He had been an outstanding individual performer, and now he was a new manager, leading a team responsible for producing steel for a major automobile company. After just one week on the job, Tom and his team met with over 20 engineers from that other company. It was a rude awakening. I sat in a room with maybe 20 or 25 of their engineers for the annual quality evaluation of suppliers. And I learned for the first time that we were in the bottom of the bottom quartile as a supplier. We had lousy quality, we had lousy invoicing, we had lousy on-time delivery. And this was my first general manager role! I had grown up as an engineer. And how did Tom respond to this unexpected shock? I had a holy shit moment! I had been in the job literally a week. So part of it was, 'Oh my God, what the hell am I going to do?' Also I thought about how my guys had been in the business for a while, and I thought, 'What the hell have you been doing?' And I was thinking, 'I'm going to clean house!' But then... I've learned that you just can't react viscerally every time something comes up because it just scares people away. So Tom listened attentively as the engineers from the auto company presented their litany of complaints. When they finally finished, he stood up and said, "I wouldn't blame you if you fired us as a supplier. But if you give us a chance to fix these problems, I guarantee you that that we will not have this kind of meeting next year." When Tom met with his team the next morning to discuss the situation, he started by just listening to them. They went on for some time complaining about how the company and their previous boss had made it impossible for them to provide good products and service. Rather than disagree with them or join in pointing fingers at others, Tom listened. "I didn't think about it at the time, but that first couple of hours was very cathartic for them. My focus was not on beating anyone up but rather, what can we do to fix this?" The team responded positively to Tom's approach. The next year when they met, the auto company told Tom that they "never saw any business turn around that quickly in one year." As a result, they began giving Tom's company more business, and Tom went on to a distinguished career, eventually becoming one of his company's top executives"--

Download or read book WE written by Rania H. Anderson and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "You cannot win without a workplace where women and men have equal opportunities, equal input, and equal power." —Dominic Barton, Global Managing Partner, McKinsey & Company On almost a daily basis, we read stories in the news about high-profile male leaders, CEOs, venture capitalists, and entrepreneurs harassing and acting inappropriately toward the women with whom they work. Following such revelations, these men generally lose their jobs, and their companies lose valuable female talent, customers/clients, and their reputations. And, although we regularly hear stories about the "bro culture" that obstructs women's progress and creates hostile work environments for them, we haven't heard as much about the efforts of good men who want to change the in-office behavior of their teams and companies so that they and women they work with can realize their full potential and their businesses can thrive. This book teaches men and managers how to respond in these situations and how to lead by example. In WE: Men, Women, and the Decisive Formula for Winning at Work, Rania Anderson lends her guidance on this exact topic. Social mores have changed, and yet, well-intentioned managers simply don't always know what to do and what's appropriate and useful to actively recruit, retain, and advance more women into leadership. They want to be told how this can make a difference to them and how they can make a difference— this book shows you how to improve your own results and win in business: A new playbook to recruit and retain high-caliber women Take actions to work effectively, elevate and lead with women in the workplace Discover how traditional social roles exert a powerful pull on people of both genders and what to do about it. End confusion of male leaders In the #MeToo era when everyone else is focused on what’s wrong and what not to do, WE: Men, Women, and the Decisive Formula for Winning at Work, is about what’s going well and what you can do. Men who are front-line managers, middle managers, and senior managers have been sidelined and left out of efforts to achieve gender parity for too long. Now, these guys can get back in the game!

This book was released on 2021-03-23 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named a Best Business Book of 2021 by Soundview Magazine Reclaim the power of genuine human connection Networking is often considered a necessary evil for all working professionals. With social media platforms like Linkedin, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook at our disposal, reaching potential investors or employers is much easier. Yet, these connections often feel transactional, agenda-driven, and dehumanizing, leaving professionals feeling burnt out and stressed out. Instead, we should connect on a human level and build authentic relationships beyond securing a new job or a new investor for your next big idea. To build real and meaningful networking contacts, we need to go back to basics, remembering that technology is a tool and more than just a means to an end. We need to tap into our humanity and learn to be more intentional and authentic. As a “serial connector” and communications expert, Susan McPherson has a lifetime of experience building genuine connections in and out of work. Her methodology is broken down into three simple steps: Gather: Instead of waiting for the perfect networking opportunity to come to you, think outside the box and create your own opportunity. Host your own dinner party, join a local meet-up group, or volunteer at your neighborhood food pantry. Ask: Instead of leading with our own rehearsed elevator pitches asking for help, ask to help, opening the door to share resources, experience, contacts, and perspectives that add diversity to your own vision. Do: Turn new connections into meaningful relationships by taking these newly formed relationships deeper. Follow through on the promises you made and keep in touch. Woven together with helpful tips and useful advice on making the most out of every step, this book draws on McPherson’s own experience as a renowned “serial connector,” as well as the real life success stories of friends and clients. Filled with humor, humility, and wisdom, The Lost Art of Connecting is the handbook we all need to foster personal and professional relationships that blur the lines between work and play—and enrich our lives in every way.
