Book Efficacy of a Freshman Outdoor Orientation Program on Student Transition to University Life

Download or read book Efficacy of a Freshman Outdoor Orientation Program on Student Transition to University Life written by Jessica Nendza and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outdoor Orientation Programs (OOPs) have become a staple at many universities for first year students to assist with the transition to college life. This study examines Penn States AURORA programs to determine whether students who participated in the orientation experience transitioned to college better than students who did not participate. Constructs measured were social support, and academic success as measured by the Campus Focused-Social Provisions Scale and the College Learning Effectiveness Inventory, respectively. The sample of students were first year students who participated in an AURORA program and a control group of first year students (N= 227). Overall, the findings were not significant, however AURORA participants scored significantly higher than non-participants in Time Management (p=.019) and approached significance in Classroom Communication (p=.057). These findings suggest that more in depth studies need to be done on OOPs, specifically long term effects of OOPs and how they impact students after their first year.

This book was released on 2012-05-17 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thriving in Transitions: A Research-Based Approach to College Student Success represents a paradigm shift in the student success literature. Grounded in positive psychology, the thriving concept reframes the student success conversation by focusing on the characteristics amenable to change and that promote high levels of academic, interpersonal, and intrapersonal performance in the college environment. The authors contend that a focus on remediating student characteristics or merely encouraging specific behaviors is inadequate to promote success in college and beyond. The collection presents six research studies describing the characteristics that predict thriving in different groups of college students, including first-year students, transfer students, high-risk students, students of color, sophomores, and seniors, and offers recommendations for helping students thrive in college and life.

Download or read book Designing Successful Transitions written by National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience & Students in Transition (University of South Carolina) and published by First-Year Experience Monograp. This book was released on 2010 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2010 edition of this monograph addresses many topics (e.g., administration of orientation programs, family involvement, student characteristics and needs, assessment, and orientation for specific student populations and institutional types) that were included in previous editions but approaches them with new information, updated data, and current theory. However, this edition also takes up new topics in response to the "opportunities and concerns" facing orientation, transition, and retention professionals such as collaborations among campus units in the development and delivery of orientation, the increase in nontraditional student populations, the need for effective crisis planning and management in orientation programs, new technologies, and even the challenge of making the case for orientation in an era of diminishing resources. The authors have carefully penned chapters incorporating contemporary information, ideas, and concepts while being reflective of traditional practices. Following a preface by Margaret J. Barr and a foreword by Jennifer R. Keup and Craig E. Mack, chapters in this edition include: (1) Brief Overview of the Orientation, Transition, and Retention Field (Craig E. Mack); (2) Theoretical Perspectives on Orientation (Denise L. Rode and Tony W. Cawthon); (3) Making the Case for Orientation: Is It Worth It? (Bonita C. Jacobs); (4) Administration of a Comprehensive Orientation Program (April Mann, Charlie Andrews, and Norma Rodenburg); (5) Community College Orientation and Transition Programs (Cathy J. Book Orientation Collection

Download or read book Orientation Collection written by University of Rochester and published by . This book was released on with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection contains material related to Orientation programs for first-year undergraduate students, including transfer students, from 1941 onward. Items within the collection tend to address one of three audiences: students, their families, or staff and faculty at the University. Materials available to students at Orientation have included schedules, welcome packets, and ephemera. Freshman Week schedules (1940s-1960s) list events with their date and time. Student Orientation Program schedules, distributed during the summer from the early 1960s to 2000, include a detailed schedule, maps and directions, placement questionnaires, information about first-years' courses, departments, and advanced-placement credit. Multiple sessions were often held for Orientation programs in a given year. Some schedules, therefore, resemble one another but are designated for Session I, Session II, or Session III, or by dates of events. In 2000, schedules contained events similar to those offered during Frosh Week and Summer Orientation, as well as newer events covering topics such as communal principles, diversity, sexual misconduct, the Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT), and academic pathways. The collection also contains welcome/enrollment packets from the early 2000s, which contain welcome letters, forms, and information about academics, the academic calendar, financial aid, housing, dining, disability services, information technology, health services, and Public Safety, among other topics. Additional ephemera consists mainly of flyers publicizing student organizations and activities. Materials intended for families, particularly parents, have included registration forms, program schedules (providing descriptions of events and information about the Parent Orientation Program), guidebooks/handbooks, and flyers. The collection contains guidebooks from 1954 to 1964, with some gaps. The Guidebook for Parents of Freshmen (sometimes titled Guidebook for Parents of Freshman Women or Guidebook for Parents of Freshman Men) addresses topics such as permission for out-of-town travel, academic expectations and grading, student resources (such as freshmen advisers, religious counselors, health officers, social advisers, and vocational counselors), financial aid, dormitory regulations, and a telephone directory. The collection also includes issues of the Parent Handbook from the 1980s to the early 2000s. These contain more detail than earlier guidebooks, covering topics such as academic life, student life, student services, facilities, financial matters, calendars, and maps. Materials intended for use by staff and faculty tend to focus on the planning of Orientation programs. Material varies by year but often consists of correspondence, speeches, and manuals/handbooks for advisers of first-year students (containing lists of University services, resources available to students, and lists of students' frequently asked questions). Ephemera, often not created by but approved by Orientation staff, consists mainly of flyers publicizing organizations and opportunities. The target audience for these is usually students and parents. When a large amount of ephemera is present for a given year, it has been subdivided into the following categories: student organizations and opportunities; parents; and University services, events, and publications.
