This book was released on 2004 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there is broad agreement on the importance of rehabilitation and the need to improve occupational health and vocational rehabilitation in the UK, there is considerable uncertainty about what 'rehabilitation' is, and about its cost-effectiveness, particularly for the common health problems that cause most long-term disability and incapacity. This paper seeks to develop a theoretical and conceptual basis for the rehabilitation of common health problems. Chapters include: traditional rehabilitation and the need for a different approach; illness, disability and incapacity for work; the biopsychosocial model and framework of disability; obstacles to recovery and return to work; clinical and occupational management of common health problems; personal responsibility and motivation; and rehabilitation in a social security context.

Download or read book A New Deal for Welfare written by Great Britain: Department for Work and Pensions and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2006-01-24 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Green Paper sets out the Government's proposals for welfare reform, including proposals for incapacity benefit claimants, lone parents and older workers, in order to achieve an 80 per cent employment rate for people of working age. Proposals to reform incapacity benefit include the introduction of: i) a new benefit called Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), to replace incapacity benefit from 2008, with an enhanced employment support element; ii) revised medical assessments which focus on ability and support needs rather than incapacity, to be completed in 12 weeks in most cases; and iii) mandatory work-focused interviews supported by a mandatory action plan for return to work activity for new and existing claimants. Other proposals include a £360 million roll out of the Pathways to Work scheme across the country by 2008 (currently being piloted in seven areas); piloting a new work-related activity premium for lone parents on income support benefit and increasing the frequency of work-focused interviews; improving support for jobseekers over 50 years and working with employers to extend flexible working arrangements. The deadline for responses to this consultation document is 21 April 2006.
Download or read book Educating the Student Body written by Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-11-13 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical inactivity is a key determinant of health across the lifespan. A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.
Download or read book Gaining and Retaining a Job written by Great Britain: National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2005-10-13 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2004, of the 6.7 million disabled people of working age in Britain, 50 per cent were in employment compared to 75 per cent of the working age population as a whole. The Government has made a commitment to increase the employment rate of disabled people and to reduce the difference between their employment rate and the overall rate by 2006. This NAO report examines the barriers faced by disabled people in finding and retaining employment, the specialist programmes and schemes provided by the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) to address this issue, the quality and accessibility of support available, and the cost effectiveness of such schemes. The report finds that the DWP funds a broad range of schemes (which are managed by Jobcentre Plus and contracted out to a range of providers in the public, private and voluntary sectors) and is on course to meet its target for increasing the employment rate of disabled people. However, more progress is needed to ensure such programmes benefit a wider number of people, and recommendations made include the need to establish a more flexible modular approach to programmes; to improve data collection and verification schemes to monitor services; to promote enhanced efficiency through better contracting; to provide greater support and training for advisers; to improve the cost effectiveness of Remploy businesses and to ensure better support to help individuals find alternative employment if necessary; and for the DWP to develop a clearer strategy for engaging with employers at a local level.

Download or read book Contagious Representation written by Frank C. Thames and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women’s participation in parliaments, high courts, and executive offices worldwide has reached record high numbers, but this global increase in women’s representation masks significant variation among different democratic political systems. For example, in December of 2009, Rwanda’s legislature contained 56% women, while the U.S. Congress contained only about 17% and the Japanese Diet had only 11%. Since 2000, only twenty-seven women have achieved executive office worldwide. Contagious Representation is a comprehensive look at women’s participation in all aspects of public life in the main democratic political institutions—the executive, the judiciary, the legislature, and within political parties. Moving beyond studies of single countries and institutions, Contagious Representation presents original data from 159 democratic countries spanning 50 years, providing a comprehensive understanding of women in democracies worldwide. The first volume to offer an analysis on all avenues for women’s participation for such a lengthy time period, Contagious Representation examines not only the causes of women’s representation in the main democratic political institutions but also how women’s representation in one institution affects the others. Each chapter contains case studies and examples of the change in women’s participation over time from around the world. Thames and Williams definitively explain the rise, decline, or stagnant levels of women’s political participation, considering how representation is contagious across political institutions and gaining a better understanding of what factors affect women’s political participation.

Download or read book Behavioral Approaches to Crime and Delinquency written by Edward K. Morris and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The systematic application of behavioral psychology to crime and delinquency was begun only 20 years ago, yet it has already contributed significantly to our practical knowledge about prevention and correction and to our general under standing of a pressing social problem. In this handbook, we review and evalu ate what has been accomplished to date, as well as what is currently at the leading edge of the field. We do so in order to present a clear, comprehensive, and systematic view of the field and to promote and encourage still more effective action and social policy reform in the future. The chapters in this text have been written by professionals who were among the original innovators in applying behavioral psychology to crime and delinquency and who continue to make critical contributions to the field's progress, and by a new generation of energetic, young professionals who are taking the field in important and innovative directions. The contributors have attempted to review and evaluate their areas with critical dispassion, to pro vide thorough but not overly specialized discussion of their material, and to draw implications for how research, application, and social policy might be improved in the future. For our part as editors, we have tried to foster integra tion across the chapters and to provide background and conceptual material of our own.
