Now that modern architecture has become familiar (sometimes celebrated, sometimes vilified), it's hard to imagine how novel it once seemed. Expensive buildings were transformed from ornamental fancies which referred to the classical and medieval pasts into strikingly plain reflections of novel materials, functions, and technologies. Modern architecture promised the transformation of cities from overcrowded conurbations characterised by packed slums and dirty industries to spacious realms of generous housing and clean mechanised production set in parkland. At certain times and in certain cultures, it stood for the liberation of the future from the past. This Very Short Introduction explores the technical innovations that opened-up the cultural and intellectual opportunities for modern architecture to happen. Here command means the determination of what to do, and control means the ongoing managementofthe execution ofa command. 3 Decision making is the essence of C I which is accomplished through a phased implementation of a set of facilities, communications, personnel, equipment and procedures for monitoring, forecasting, planning, directing, allocating resources, and generating options to achieve specific and general objectives. 3 The C I system that is in question here is for a strategic military command including its subordinate commands. Although the design methodology that will be expounded in the book is for a military system, it can, to a large extent, apply also to tactical military as well as to civilian management information systems (MIS). 3 A C I system is a decision making network that reflects a hierarchical organization 3 of C I nodes. Each node is responsible for the management of some portion ofthe available resources, where the higher level nodes are responsible for a 3 correspondingly greater portion of the resources. Within a C I system both command and control decision making occur at every level of the hierarchy. Command decisions at one level determine how to satisfy the management decisions at a higher level.

Book excerpt: This project focused upon the issue of temporality and permanence in our current society, while also including relevant issues such as diversity, community, publicity, privacy, and interaction. The project stated the intention to create architecture that could record moment, evolve, and suggest interaction in its design in order to satisfy the desire for both permanence and temporality in our society. Building program and site also focused upon changing conditions. The building program included mixing of various uses under constant transition and the site was a place undergoing present change, while attempting to preserve its character. Site location was in South End, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Design work simplified the project in the spring to focus solely upon the initial topic of permanence and temporality as a primary motivation. Design work resulted in a permanent infrastructure that would contain necessary services and public space for a block of a community. This infrastructure also provided voids for buildings to plug into as needed. The voids would fill over time. The design of an infrastructure provided efficient means for transitions in our society by being both permanent and flexible. However, the destructive and overpowering characteristics of the infrastructure erase site character, an important project issue.

Of course, much has changed in the past couple of years. In formerly free-spending Dubai, the tallest building in the world is now is named after the president of Abu Dhabi after he stepped in with last--minute debt financing. In cities across the United States, housing prices have nose-dived and cleared lots sit ready for commercial redevelopment that likely won't take place for another decade. Similar stories are not hard to find in many other nations. Architecture firms that swelled in flush days are jettisoning employees at a startling rate. In the context of economic instability (and its attendant social and political consequences), this edited volume brings together scholars, critics, and architects to discuss the present state of uncertainty in the practice and discipline of architecture. The chapters are organized into three main areas of inquiry: economics, practice, and technology. Within this larger framework, authors explore issues of security, ecological design, disaster architecture, the future of architectural practice, and the ethical obligations of the social practice of design. In doing so, it argues that this period has actually afforded architecture a valuable moment of self-reflection, where alternative directions for both the theory and practice of architecture might be explored rather than continuing with an approach which was so nurtured by capitalist prosperity and affluence.

Lavin turns to the architecture of Richard Neutra (1892-1970) to explore the genesis of these new mood-inducing environments. In a series of engaging essays weaving through the designs and writings of this Vienna-born, California-based architect, Lavin discovers in Neutra a sustained and poignant psychoanalytic reflection set in the context of a burgeoning psychoanalytic culture in America. Lavin shows that Neutra's redirection of modernism constituted not a lyrical regression to sentimentality but a deliberate advance of architectural theory and technique to engage the unconscious mind, fueled by the ideas of psychoanalysis that were being rapidly disseminated at the time. In Neutra's responses to a vivid range of issues, from psychoanalysis proper to the popular psychology of tele-evangelical prayer, Lavin uncovers a radical reconstitution of the architectural discipline. Arguing persuasively that the received historical views of both psychoanalysis and architecture have led to a suppression of their compelling coincidences and unorthodoxies, Lavin sets out to unleash midcentury architecture's hidden libido. Neither Neutra nor psychoanalysis emerges unscathed from her investigation of how architecture came to be saturated by the intrigues of affect, often against its will. If Reyner Banham sought to put architecture "on the couch," then Lavin, through Neutra, leaps beyond Banham's ameliorative aim to lure contemporary architecture into the lush and dangerous liaisons of environmental design.

Book excerpt: Building, supported by the practice of architecture, is churning resources into waste at an alarming rate. Our method of construction has its inevitable conclusion in a pile of rubble. Lamentably, the natural resources we build with are finite, and our exploitation of these has nearly reached its peak. As humanity strives for a renewable energy future, architecture must engage in the renewable use of materials. In the long term future, architects need to design buildings so their materials can be recovered, refurbished and reused. Principles for designing in circular life cycles were laid out by McDonough and Braungart in their 2002 book, Cradle to Cradle.[1] In more than a decade since the book was published, there is little evidence that the process of architecture has changed to support design for disassembly and the reuse of materials. This thesis aims to outline a method of design for material reuse that supports a healthy circular flow of material life, death and rebirth. World Expositions have become the epitome of disposable architecture, with renowned architects designing pavilions with an intended life span of six months. This thesis proposes a transformation of the Expo type from an endgame of waste to one of reuse. A contemplated Expo Toronto in 2025 provides the opportunity to reclaim a reputation for showcasing the future. The proposed brief for such an Expo challenges countries to exhibit stories of regeneration in an event built on the theme of reuse and recycling. The Expo is an ideal venue for the design of prototype pavilions assembled out of renewable and reusable materials. This thesis proposes two pavilion types, which at the Expo's conclusion will be immediately reused in communities across Canada. The first type is designed to be entirely recycled when it is no longer needed. The second pavilion type is assembled of material which can be composted, returning nutrients to the soil. The resulting buildings will be adaptable to change, reusable in parts, and return their materials to circular flows at end of life.
