Book Short Studies on Great Subjects Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Short Studies on Great Subjects Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by James Anthony Froude and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Studies on Great Subjects, Vol. 2 Ladies and gentlemen, -i have undertaken to speak to you this evening on what is called the Science of History. I fear it is a dry subject; and there seems, indeed, something incongruous in the very connection of such words as Science and History. It is as if we were to talk of the colour of sound, or the longitude of the rule - of-three. Where it is so difficult to make out the truth on the commonest disputed fact in matters passing under our very eyes, how can we talk of a Science in things long past, which come to us only through books? It often seems to me as if History was like a child's box of letters, with which we can spell any word we please. We have only to pick out such letters as we want, arrange them as we like, and say nothing about those which do not suit our purpose. I will try to make the thing intelligible, and I will try not to weary you; but I am doubtful of my success either way. First, however, I wish to say a word or two about the eminent person whose name is connected with this way of looking at History, and whose premature death struck us all with such a sudden sorrow. Many of you, perhaps, recollect Mr. Buckle as he stood not so long ago in this place. He Spoke more than an hour Without a note - never repeating himself, never wasting words. This book was released on 2017-12-03 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Studies on Great Subjects, Vol. 2 of 5 Religious men, it is sometimes said, express them selves in all moods and all tenses except the present indicative. They tell us of things that were done in ancient times. They tell us of things which will be hereafter, or which might or would have been under certain conditions. Of the actual outward dispensa tion under which we live at present, we hear very little. The facts of experience are not sufficiently in harmony with the theories of different religious bodies to allow any sect or set of believers to appeal to them with con fidence. The age of miracles is past. The world is supposed to go its own way, undisturbed by providen tial interferences, waiting for some final account to be taken with it hereafter; while the relations of the Creator with His creatures are confined to special and invisible processes by which individual souls are saved from perdition. He spoke more than an hour without a note-never repeating himself, never wasting words; laying out his matter as easily and as pleasantly as if he had been talking to us at his own fireside. We might think what we pleased of Mr. Buckle's views, but it was plain enough that he was a man of uncommon power; and he had qualities also-qualities to which he, perhaps, himself attached little value, as rare as they were admirable. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Book Studies Vol 2 of 2

Download or read book Studies Vol 2 of 2 written by Alfred Russel Wallace and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies, Vol. 2 of 2: Scientific Social Public museums of natural objects being such entirely modern institutions, we can hardly wonder that no generally accepted principles have yet been laid down for their construction or arrangement. They most frequently originated with private collectors, Whose plan was naturally followed in their enlargement; and when they outgrew their original domicile, an architect was called in, who, according to his special tastes, designed a temple or a palace for their reception. However inconvenient or un suitable the original mode of exhibition might turn out, or however ill adapted to its purpose the new building might prove, it would, of course, be exceedingly difficult and expensive to alter either Of them, more especially as the modified plan might be found, after trial, to have defects as great as that which it replaced. Two eminent naturalists, Sir Joseph Hooker and the late Dr. J. E. Gray, both connected with great public museums, have made suggestions towards a more rational system and as it is evident that museums will increase, and may be made an important agent in national education and the elevation of the masses of the people, it seems advisable that the subject Should be brought forward for popular discussion. Accepting as a basis the few essential principles that seem now to be agreed upon, I propose to follow them out into some rather important details.
