Fortunately, the more serious injuries have been taken directly from the field to the hospital by emergency medical personnel. The aid station is more like a social club where the paramedics and victims of minor injuries can chat about their favorite topic: the American Civil War. All that is about to change. With twenty minutes until the start of the next battle scenario, Eric, the senior EMT, sends the minor injury cases on their way, readying the tent for any injuries that might happen during the battle. Only Joe, a heat exhaustion case, plus two fellow EMTs are left in the aid station. His fellow medic, Monica, who became a paramedic because of a fascination with medicine that started with her great-great grandmother’s tales of nursing at a field hospital at Gettysburg, starts to share insights on what it was like at the real Battle of Gettysburg. Suddenly, a cannon shot booms, followed by more in quick succession, followed by thunder. Has the battle started early? Strangely, it sounds more like the sounds of battle are coming from the actual site of the Battle of Gettysburg. Then an injured Yankee with a serious leg injury appears in the doorway of the medical tent. He starts to talk to their heat-exhaustion victim, and seems to be very good at his period impression, far too good. They start to treat the man, only to be interrupted by two Yankees bringing a new victim into their aid station, a man with an actual gunshot wound to the chest! Instantly, our paramedics are plunged into a very real life-and-death situation, as they struggle to save the man’s life. And as the sounds of battle rage outside their tent, they try to summon help, only to find their two-way radio has gone dead. Is their patient a tragic accident, a ghost, a traveler in time---or something else? Will their patient live or die? Who are these other men, who have also appeared from the fog of battle? One man seems stuck somewhere between, in a groundhog effect, approaching and re-approaching the Gates in a repeatedly futile attempt to attain a bottle of white-out. In order to follow standard protocol, the clerk must annotate on the requisition form what exactly the white-out is being used for. Peter is his name, and he has seen the White-Out Man many times over the past months and his patience is running thin. As he inquires of the reasoning behind the request, White-Out Man becomes irate and difficult, overheard by Peter’s Boss who intervenes on the intercom. White-Out Man is haggard, and doesn’t seem to realize that the same old mistakes can’t be covered up over, and over again. The file-purging time approaches yet again, and he has discovered that before he can purge, his form needs to be clean, hence the necessity of the white-out. He also doesn’t recognize that he is in impeding danger of being hauled down the seemingly endless stairs to the “Sub-levels”. Poor White-Out Man, he knows what lies down in the Sub-levels; but is unsure if there is any way to avoid them other than to white-out his mistakes time and again. This rare metaphorical work, White-Out Man, broaches age-old questions of humanity in a purely science fiction manner that most people today can relate to. In a world that is all but overcome by technology and requisite red tape, where not even a simple pen can be accessed without filling out a form, it seems all but impossible to maintain any semblance of composure. The question is… will we be faced with these same or similar endless circles of frustration and bureaucracy even after our time on Earth is complete? Images of reporters and newspaper readers, messengers and town criers, announcements and rumors populate the work of such thinkers as Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, and Benjamin. This book argues that these three thinkers’ preoccupation with journalism cannot be separated from their philosophy “proper” but plays a pivotal role in their philosophical work, where it marks an important nexus between their theories of history, time, and language. Journalism, in the tradition Vandeputte brings to light, figures before anything else as a cipher of the time in which philosophy is written. If the journalist and newspaper reader characterize what Kierkegaard calls “the present age,” that is because they exemplify a present marked by the crisis of the philosophy of history—a time after the demise of history as a philosophizable concept. In different ways, the pages of the newspaper appear in the European philosophical tradition as a site where teleological and totalizing representations of history must founder, together with the conceptions of progress and development that sustain them. But journalism does not simply mark the end of philosophy; for Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, and Benjamin, journalistic writing also takes on an exemplary role in the attempt to think time and history in the wake of this demise. The concepts around which these attempts crystallize—Kierkegaard’s “instant,” Nietzsche’s “untimeliness,” and Benjamin’s “actuality”—all emerge from the philosophical confrontation with journalism and its characteristic temporalities.
