Book excerpt: Short Story Press Present True Wind by Matthew Kilpatrick “True Wind” is a fantasy adventure story set in a secondary world where magic exists and so do merfolk (although not in the form traditionally depicted in similar stories). He must also take his young, vulnerable sister, True Wind along, so that she may discover her destiny. The story features: • A secondary fantasy world filled with magic and other strange things • A young merman’s struggle with bravery and conflicting loyalties • A young secondary antagonist who hopes to discover her destiny, even if it means facing danger • A dangerous rescue mission performed in an unknown, foreign land • A climactic and unexpected resolution The story begins with a depiction of the lives of Moonheart and his fellow merfolk but soon transforms into a suspenseful adventure where the stakes are high and a false or ill-considered move can mean disaster. You will follow Moonheart’s quest to protect True Wind at any cost, even if it means denying her destiny. He may learn, however, that destiny is not something one can thwart, no matter how determined they may be. Short Story Press publishes short stories written by everyday writers.

Book Short Story Press Presents The Gig

Download or read book Short Story Press Presents The Gig written by Short Story Press and published by Short Story Press. This book was released on 2012-07-30 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short Story Press Presents The Gig by Cody Weinmann The book, The Gig is a story of American horror and tragedy that involves the downfall of a once-successful musician who had travelled the world, one coffee shop, one bar, one stage at a time. Under the recession, he fell out of work. He began searching coffee shops, just begging different shop owners for work. He was never seen without his sax in hand, but after the thirtieth no from the 30th club or coffee house, he is sitting having coffee when he falls to the floor in a massive, convulsing seizure. In another pose, 24 hours after this attempt on his life, the devil threatens the musician's life with another seizure and then a car wreck. In a saving grab, the musician is taken to heaven where he's listed as one of God's musical heroes. You can call it a horror cum spiritual story where fate and faith are tested multiple times. This story really brings to light just how difficult it is to live in this dangerous world and to survive where money is an ever-tightening resource. It also shows how the lack of money contributes to the downfall of other attributes to a person, including the individual's health and mental capacity. This book puts a new spin on horror and spirituality as a mix to remember. Short Story Press publishes short stories written by everyday writers.

Book Short Story Press Presents Dead People s Letters

Download or read book Short Story Press Presents Dead People s Letters written by Short Story Press and published by Short Story Press. This book was released on 2012-10-26 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short Story Press Presents Dead People's Letters by Matthew Kilpatrick “Dead People’s Letters” is a story that should appeal to fans of ghosts and zombies as well as fans of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s classic works. It not only places the undead in the middle of 19th century Russia, but also makes them the central characters of the story and also good friends with one another. “Dead People’s Letters” is a complex and layered story that examines: - The relationship between the body and the soul, and where one leaves off and the other begins. - The differing physical and mental natures of men and women. - The theme of obsession, and being the object of another’s obsession. - The theme of desperation and deciding what one is willing to do in order to become free of a tormentor. The letters between Ivan Pavelovich and Philippa Pytrovna tell the story of both characters, and how though each is dealing with their own problems, their plight eventually becomes a shared one and they realize that only the two of them truly understand each other’s situation, and they can only rely on one another for help, guidance and solace. They also learn that it is only through one another that they can escape from their seemingly doomed existence. Short Story Press publishes short stories written by everyday writers.

Book Short Story Press Presents Sense and Super Abilities

Download or read book Short Story Press Presents Sense and Super Abilities written by Short Story Press and published by Short Story Press. This book was released on 2012-12-27 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short Story Press Presents Sense and Super Abilities by Matthew Kilpatrick “Sense and Super-Abilities” is a pastiche of the settings, style, and sort of characters usually associated with Jane Austen and Superlatives, superhuman characters similar to modern comic book heroes. Though it combines two previously existing elements, it is an original story and not a mash-up. Told as a first-person narrative by its main character, Catherine Eldenbrook, “Sense and Super-Abilities” details: • Catherine’s humble beginnings as a reclusive scientist’s daughter. • Her personal history, the death of her mother, and her long and loving relationship with Fanny, her robotic nursemaid and governess • Her transformation into an augmented being, and learning that it is her destiny to become a Superlative. • Her training under the other Superlatives, and her ultimate test coming from somewhere frighteningly close to home Readers hear Catherine’s story from Catherine herself. While she may begin as a simple country girl with no idea of going to London to train in the ways of combating ultimate evil, it is a fate that she learns is inescapable. She also learns that power, attaining it as well as using it wisely, can have dire and unexpected consequences. “Sense and Super-Abilities” is the tale of one girl’s coming of age, and how she learns to do what is right, even if it is not what comes easily. Dating My Boyfriend’s Brother is an example of what can happen in a relationship that begins online, and what can happen when you match a determined, driven single woman ready for a man to put a “ring on it” with a divorced man who although is lonely and looking for companionship also has a weird way of showing how much he needs Skyy. Book Short Story Press Presents Barren

Download or read book Short Story Press Presents Barren written by Short Story Press and published by Short Story Press. This book was released on 2013-01-18 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short Story Press Presents Barren by Jesse Matthew Jacondin Four years ago, Nick Laverdi left his hometown of Barren in northern New Jersey and moved directly east to the city of New York. After the well-publicized collapse of the only famous person to ever come from Barren, the town picked up a crippling reputation that it was never able to shake. Each native bears its burden like a cross, and Nick is no different. He has spent his whole life trying to disassociate himself with his hometown, and on his first trip home since he left, Nick’s mission is simple: move his parents out of his childhood home. A drive down memory lane, otherwise known as Wanaque Avenue, quickly complicates this task. Memories abound as he conjures up thoughts of deceased friends, lost opportunities, miscalculated risks, and a town that is hard to escape successfully. It leaves Nick questioning why he ever thought he could get away in the first place. His arrival home does little to ease his torment. An emotional reunion with his mother and a distant reunion with his father offer glimpses into his own failures as he grew up and attempted to leave unscathed. Ultimately, a conversation with his older sister reminds Nick that even though he physically left Barren, it will take a lot more than relocating to wash away its stench completely. Book Short Story Press Presents Without Decent Restraint

Download or read book Short Story Press Presents Without Decent Restraint written by Short Story Press and published by Short Story Press. This book was released on 2012-08-25 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short Story Press Presents Without Decent Restraint by Matthew Kilpatrick “Without Decent Restraint” is a story about the duality of man, both the conflict between the mind and the body, and also how the desire to get what we want can put that very thing in danger. It examines whether or not the things we do, justified to ourselves as being done out of concern for others, can actually have a selfish motive. It explores the horrors that come to the surface when a man is confronted with an unthinking and dangerous version of himself, as well as other elements: • A world ruined by a zombie apocalypse with a mysterious cause • One man’s determined quest to seek out one thing in the midst of the chaos at any cost • The protagonist’s desperation growing when his situation drastically changes • His adaptation to his new situation, and learning the things he is still capable of doing • A taut climax where his love and his strength will be put to the test The stakes in any story such as “Without Decent Restraint” are always high. However, the stakes for the protagonist in this story aren’t just high, they are deeply, painfully personal. He will soon learn that he may be risking it all in order to determine that his family is safe, and that being dead doesn’t stop him from being responsible for their protection when the moment counts.
