Book A Concise History of Switzerland

Download or read book A Concise History of Switzerland written by Clive H. Church and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-05-23 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its position at the heart of Europe and its quintessentially European nature, Switzerland's history is often overlooked within the English-speaking world. This comprehensive and engaging history of Switzerland traces the historical and cultural development of this fascinating but neglected European country from the end of the Dark Ages up to the present. The authors focus on the initial Confederacy of the Middle Ages; the religious divisions which threatened it after 1500 and its surprising survival amongst Europe's monarchies; the turmoil following the French Revolution and conquest, which continued until the Federal Constitution of 1848; the testing of the Swiss nation through the late nineteenth century and then two World Wars and the Depression of the 1930s; and the unparalleled economic and social growth and political success of the post-war era. The book concludes with a discussion of the contemporary challenges, often shared with neighbours, that shape the country today.

Book excerpt: Why has Switzerland - a tiny, land-locked country with few natural advantages - become so successful for so long at so many things? In banking, pharmaceuticals, machinery, even textiles, Swiss companies rank alongside the biggest and most powerful global competitors. How did they get there? How do they continue to refresh themselves? Does the Swiss 'Sonderfall' (special case) provide lessons others can learn and benefit from? Can the Swiss continue to perform in a hyper-competitive global economy? Swiss Made offers answers to these and many other questions about the country as it describes the origins, structures and characteristics of the most important Swiss companies. The authors suggest success is due to a large degree to sound entrepreneurial thinking and an openness to new ideas. And they venture a surprising forecast on the country's ability to keep pace in an age of globalisation.

Not the fake history of Heidi and William Tell, but 'Swisstory' - from ancient mountain people right up to women's right to vote. Hilariously illustrated by bestselling Swiss artist Michael Meister (The Monster Book of Switzerland), Swisstory is outrageous, fascinating, gruesome - and completely true.

Book A Short History of Switzerland

Download or read book A Short History of Switzerland written by Marcel Claude Ernst and published by . This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Switzerland was the country of my birth, schooling and upbringing. I emigrated for good in 1981, but have kept in touch with relatives there and returned time and time again. No one can deny their roots; this work speaks to that fact. Through the years I have had mixed emotions: admiration for the democratic system, contrasted by dismay at the low rate of voter participation and the reactionary nature of some popular initiatives; a sense of awe and wonder concerning the small country's natural beauty, contrasted by disillusionment with volatile weather and environmental degradation; admiration of the population's diligence and thriftiness, contrasted by repulsion over occasionally small-minded attitudes and xenophobia. The Swiss experience reflects humanity's internal conflicts and struggles, but also its accomplishments. The book consists of five parts:1. Before Homo Sapiens2. The periods of Swiss settlement and civilization3. Minority language groups and particularities4. Swiss accomplishments5. Notable Swiss citizensSwiss civilization began with the Iron Age around 800 BC. Periods of foreign occupation followed before representatives from Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden concluded their eternal alliance. Five hundred years of Swiss Confederacy resulted, the most successful ever. The mountainous terrain made it possible to defend independence without central government. The Austrian and French monarchies officially recognized the confederacy's sovereignty in 1648. French occupation in 1798 created the Helvetic Republic and ultimately elevated the old confederacy's members to cantons. Fifty years later, after the Sonderbund conflict, progressive forces gave birth to modern federal Switzerland, with Berne as the capital. The concept of armed neutrality kept the country safe during the calamitous 20th century. In 2002 the Swiss finally joined the UN, after decades of harboring UN offices in Geneva. It is a success story like no other.Politically the country has become the world's foremost direct democracy, where enough signatures for a popular initiative automatically trigger a referendum. A Short History of Switzerland captures the essence of the little landlocked federation that could, from the perspective of someone who grew up there and went through its school system. The book makes the Swiss story accessible to readers fluent in English. At the same time, the narrative does not shy away from controversial topics, including the wartime experience or drug addiction problems.Government lockdowns due to Covid-19 shut down public life shortly after the publication of the third edition. The developments of the past year, particularly the Swiss response to the pandemic, called for an update. Other changes aim to provide more detail and context on historical circumstances and events, in order to clarify and elaborate. The fourth edition once again contains many additions, corrections and new material, amounting to 30% more content than its predecessor. I wrote several new chapters and included some 50 illustrations. The new chapters in Part 3 deal with Swiss guilds, witch hunts, productivity and industrialization, and computer use. Part 4 contains chapters on art and hydro power. Finally, Part 5 has a new section on Albrecht von Haller, the Swiss physician, politician and natural scientist of the Enlightenment era.

Book A Short History of Switzerland

Download or read book A Short History of Switzerland written by Marcel Claude Ernst and published by . This book was released on 2018-05-28 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of A Short History of Switzerland (published in May 2018) has sold electronic and print copies in the United States, Brazil, Japan, the UK and the rest of Europe. However, continuing research revealed some omissions that deserved to be rectified. Most chapters have been revised and extended. Published on March 31, 2019 Part 2 now includes seven chapters: "The Helvetians: Living under Occupation" has been replaced with "Pax Romana" and "Medieval Switzerland." Also, "The Transition Period" covers the bumpy road from confederacy to federal republic between 1798 and 1848. In addition I wrote three new chapters on winter sports, the Swiss environmental movement, and transportation infrastructure. Illustrations and maps that now total 39 help to put things in perspective. A picture tells a thousand words. Personal contributions of industrious commoners have been added, such as skiing pioneer Christoph Iselin, Federal Switzerland's first general, Hans Herzog and its first Secretary of Labour, Hermann Greulich. Altogether the second edition has 75% more content. A dose of enthusiasm appears needed to bring the subject up-to-date. My love of history goes all the way back to primary school, when the teacher retold fanciful (and occasionally exaggerated) tales of the brave Eidgenossen. The fateful meeting between representatives of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden that produced an eternal alliance continues to influence present-day Switzerland. But Swiss history dates back a lot further than 1291. I recall how impressed my schoolboy younger self was by the great arena in Augusta Raurica, the largest north of the Alps during Roman times. Nevertheless, the early Helvetians had already proved their skills by creating such beautiful items as the gold cup of Eschenz, 2,000 years before Caesar's arrival. Swiss historians have diligently researched their country's past. Foremost among them remains the late Edgar Bonjour (1989-1991). Citizens remember him as the Grand Master of the country's historical sciences. Bonjour gained fame through his multi-volume "History of Swiss Neutrality" and also his comprehensive report to the Federal Council on the country's foreign policy during World War II. As well, he wrote "A Short History of Switzerland" during the early 1950s, in collaboration with two English historians. This work I have consulted extensively for my update. Bonjour's account was nearly flawless, but his book ended with the Second World War, and some of his terms now appear dated. Also, archaeological research has since uncovered more details about life in pre-historic, ancient and confederacy-era Switzerland. In many ways the country's geography has made Switzerland unique. Swiss geologists and engineers have devised a model of a public transportation system, overcoming incredible odds and challenges due to mountains, risk of erosion and avalanches, meandering waterways and thick forests. Politically the country has become the world's foremost direct democracy, where enough signatures for an initiative automatically trigger a referendum. A Short History of Switzerland attempts to capture the essence of the little country that could, from the perspective of someone who grew up there and went through the country's school system. The book makes the Swiss story accessible to readers with fluency in English. At the same time, the narrative does not shy away from controversial topics, including the war time experience or drug addiction problems.

Book Memories and Impressions of Switzerland

Download or read book Memories and Impressions of Switzerland written by Anita Sumariwalla and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-04-04 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memories and Impressions of Switzerland Ten Short Stories This enchanting collection of short stories takes you on a tour of Swiss hamlets and small towns and acquaints you with a wide range of beautifully drawn characters. The stories portray human nature and behavior at its best but also not in its most admirable form. Author Anita Sumariwalla who brought readers Alexa-Alessandra: A Story of Love, has created a memorable anthology of short stories. This time, she weaves tales inspired by Memories and Impressions of Switzerland. In this compilation, readers will find ten equally fascinating short stories, reflecting memories and impressions created out of the author’s affection for the country of her birth and childhood—Switzerland. A colorful cast of characters portray society—from the almost-forgotten people to the aristocrats. Characters are exposed, influenced, and formed by their environment, their behaviors guided and judged by society. Their behaviors are not in any way unusual or unique to Switzerland. Thus, these stories are not intended to cast aspersions on Switzerland or the Swiss people. In “Attractions and Consequences”, a young maid must deal with the consequences of a fleeting attraction while “Painful Discoveries” lead to a late but happy reunion. A young woman forges her own future in “Appendicitis Helps a Dream Come True” and another’s “Purchased Silence” leads to years to unnecessary heartbreak. Readers will find other wonderful tales as they indulge in Memories and Impressions of Switzerland.

Book Let s Swallow Switzerland

Download or read book Let s Swallow Switzerland written by Klaus Urner and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2001 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Klaus Urner has discovered proof that Hitler wanted to "rub out" Switzerland. The planned occupation of the country was, however, postponed for a short time and in the end did not materialize. Switzerland was the only country in Western Europe that did not suffer military invasion in World War II. It made itself indispensable to both sides and survived in the eye of the hurricane that was Nazi aggression. "Let's Swallow Switzerland", including archival photographs, original color maps, and reprints of secret documents, sets new standards for the investigation of this important chapter of twentieth-century history.
