Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The budget battles of recent years have amplified the warnings of demographic doomsayers who predicted that a wave of baby boomers would bleed America dry, bankrupting Social Security and Medicare as they faded into an impoverished old age. On the contrary, argues award-winning journalist Chris Farrell, we are instead on the verge of a broad, positive transformation of our economy and society. The old idea of "retirement"--a word that means withdrawal, describing a time when people gave up productive employment and shrank their activities--was a short-lived historical anomaly. Humans have always found meaning and motivation in work and community, Farrell notes, and the boomer generation, poised to live longer in better health than any before, is already discovering unretirement--extending their working lives with new careers, entrepreneurial ventures, and volunteer service. Their experience, wisdom--and importantly, their continued earnings--will enrich the American workplace, treasury, and our whole society in the decades to come. Unretirement not only explains this seismic change, now in its early stages, it provides key insights and practical advice for boomers about to navigate this exciting, but unsettled, new frontier, drawing on Chris Farrell's decades of covering personal finance and economics for Bloomsberg Businessweek and Marketplace Money. This will be an indispensable guide to the landscape of unretirement from one of America's most trusted experts.

Book excerpt: IF YOU’VE REACHED A CERTAIN AGE, you may be wondering about the “golden years” and when they’ll start. But, as many Baby Boomers will tell you, sometimes it feels more like rusting, as chronic conditions make themselves known . . . and felt. The Mindful Boomer: Skills for Aging and Dying is a gentle guide to the practice of mindful meditation. Through mindful meditation you will learn how to manage the stress, anxiety, and aches and pains associated with your aging body. Just a few hours a week of quiet reflection has significant mental health benefits as well. Research with MRIs has proven that just eight weeks of mindful meditation training shrinks the area of the brain that triggers the “fight or flight” response that leads to anxiety and depression. The Mindful Boomer: Skills for Aging and Dying provides fifteen guided meditations to help you strengthen your consciousness, sensory clarity, and mental calmness and composure. It may also help you come to peace with yourself, your past, and your relationships with others.

Book His Majesty s Sailor and the Girl in the Blue Coat

Download or read book His Majesty s Sailor and the Girl in the Blue Coat written by Michael D Gilston and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2024-04-24 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s the fall of 1942, and the Second World War rages on. The skies above Britain and the oceans around her are a battleground: German bombers target cities like Liverpool and Crewe, while U-Boats and warships prowl the waters between England and France. Ten-year-old Evelyn Jackson and her parents live on rations, waiting for the sounds of the air-raid sirens above them and wondering what will come of their far-flung family in times of war. Eve stands tall, through bombings and evacuations, through an unfair beating and a paralyzing illness, and survives with her smile and her generous heart still intact. Meanwhile, one of her uncles—Submariner Dominic King—serves aboard HMS Tuna. Dominic, the boats Helmsman and along with the crew were under constant threat of German U-Boats and aircraft as they complete their ever-demanding war patrols. From delivering Marine Commandos off the coast of France to protecting the Arctic Convoys in the north Atlantic. Acting Leading Seaman Dominic King would go on to be awarded the Distinguished Service Medal by King George VI at Buckingham Palace for his bravery and courage while under fire. In events in their lives would bring them both together at the edge of the war. Many families have stories like this from mothers and grandmothers; this one is Michael’s. His Majesty’s Sailor and the Girl in the Blue Coat presents heartfelt historical fiction based on real events and stories passed down from the people who were there.

Book Africa Lite

Download or read book Africa Lite written by Christopher M. Doran and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-12-16 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author says DO NOT READ THIS BOOK. unless you want to spend the day laughing out loud while being inspired by Africa and the Peace Corps In 2008, Dr. Doran and his wife made the extraordinary decision to leave the comforts of America to join the United States Peace Corps. Assigned to Africa for two years, they participated in the fight against HIV in Botswana, a country which has the second highest incidence of HIV in the world. On one level, this is an inspiring chronicle of their work together and the joys and challenges of Peace Corps service for the Boomer generation. The book however, is much more than that. Throughout, the author relates the story of a fictional newspaper, the Kalahari Khronicle, of which he is the editor. Taking reports of news items from around the world, Kgosi (Dr. Doran's Botswana name --meaning Chief) consistently entertains the reader with sharp wit and political commentary. Written in a style reminiscent of Dave Barry and Pat Conroy, the Khronicle articles provide clever and at times hilarious observations on both American and African culture.

Book A Baby Boomer s Story

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gary Dixon
  • Publisher : Dog Ear Publishing
  • Release : 2011-11
  • ISBN : 1457507110
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book A Baby Boomer s Story written by Gary Dixon and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2011-11 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about an era in our country when American children received more freedom than any other time in American history. After the Vietnam War ended, some American Baby Boomers totally abused this freedom. This book contains many stories about some of those Baby Boomers who were taking full advantage of these times, with no regret or regard of the consequences. Many of the stories you will read about are unethical, immoral, and sometimes disturbing. This book is about a Baby Boomers life, and many of the unique people and events which occurred through these times. You will also read about certain subjects such as sex, drugs, and rock and roll, which were the trademarks of that era. The Baby Boomers not only broke all the rules which took generations to establish: They set new trends and guidelines for many generations to come. They also created a whole new way of life for the American child. Originally from the suburbs of Detroit Michigan, Gary Dixon managed to escape the magnetism of the big city life. He now calls Clearwater Florida his home. From a family of nine children, his family could definitely be considered a Baby Boomer family. With the Baby Boom era in full force, there were not too many places in America to elude the temptations of recreational drug use, and the casual sex scene. Since the Baby Boomers created this new kind of lifestyle, almost every young person in America became a part of it. Gary Dixon and many of his friends not only became a part it, they took it to a whole new level. Living through this era, his life became very unique and eccentric, and he developed many stories along the way. He would like to share these stories with anyone interested, or any other Baby Boomers who grew up through these times.

Download or read book The Secret of Simplicity written by Dan Kassera and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-10-20 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simplicity is a secret place, located in another dimension, which is parallel to our own world. Its just one of many places that exist in the spirit world. Its known only to the select few who have been tricked and abducted from this world and taken there. Thats in the belief that they had just won a free shopping trip to the Mall in Minnesota. Unknown to them, it is far more than that. The Mall is really not in Minnesota, but somewhere else in that other dimension. Both very good and bad people are taken there. Some of the really bad ones are imprisoned in that strange mall. They are finally brought to justice in some very creative and appropriate ways. Most are transported from there to a strangely quaint little river town called Simplicity. Those people have all been taken there for very specific reasons. Some find a little piece of heaven there. A few others find themselves trapped in what, for them, is their own personal hell. There is no escape and no plea bargaining. Train visitors are recruited there to serve a vital cause, once they return home. That is the cause of freedom and liberty back in America. That can only be achieved through well-organized civil disobedience and, perhaps, armed rebellion. A very creative new way has been found to actually make that work. Its a way that big government control freaks are not prepared to deal with. Simplicity is actually the planning and control center for that operation. Its permanent residents are all freedom lovers eager to serve in that cause. All have lived out their previous lives in America. They had earned their reward here in Simplicity where they live on. However, they are all deceased back in America. They can never go back. They can, though, have a tremendous impact and influence on those who are abducted from America to their spirit world. Thats where the abducted train visitors are actually shown that there really is a spirit world. They can actually meet their dead friends, relatives, and acquaintances. They learn that life really does go on. They also learn that America is forever doomedunless the new plan can be made to work. Thats when they get recruited. They are all promised that their next life will be lived in Simplicity as a reward for their efforts back home. What greater proof and incentive could there ever be? Those residents of Simplicity have all passed their final exams and have been promoted to a higher level of existence. If you cant believe them, who can you believe? Now educated and informed, the train visitors return back home, with newfound courage and a tremendous desire to do the right thing. That is because seeing is believing. Those chosen ones had been granted a rare privilege. They actually enter into the spirit world while they are still living in this world. There, they get a real shock: their proof of immortality! They actually meet the dead who had summoned them. That must be done in a very careful way, so as not to cause heart attacks or fainting spells. Before they are sent back, they are all given two special gifts, completely unattainable in their world. If they ever doubt the experience, those two items will convince them otherwise. One is a large medallion made of a strange material unknown on earth. It says, simply, I was there. The second mystery item is an unbreakable pocket mirror in a leather case. Removed from the case, the mirror emits an eerie glow. Printed below the mirror are the words, I cannot do everything, but I can do something. That which I can do, I ought to do. I will not fail. Most importantly, the train visitors are recruited into the most secret of all organizations. Its purpose is to restore freedom to America by any means necessary. That is the real secret of Simplicity. Among them is a young man named Joe Quin. He has been tricked into going there, like all the others, but for a different purpose. Joe is a person of spec

Download or read book Boomsday written by Christopher Buckley and published by Hachette+ORM. This book was released on 2007-04-25 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outraged over the mounting Social Security debt, Cassandra Devine, a charismatic 29-year-old blogger and member of Generation Whatever, incites massive cultural warfare when she politely suggests that Baby Boomers be given government incentives to kill themselves by age 75. Her modest proposal catches fire with millions of citizens, chief among them "an ambitious senator seeking the presidency." With the help of Washington's greatest spin doctor, the blogger and the politician try to ride the issue of euthanasia for Boomers (called "transitioning") all the way to the White House, over the objections of the Religious Right, and of course, the Baby Boomers, who are deeply offended by demonstrations on the golf courses of their retirement resorts.
