Book Short Lectures to Electrical Classic Reprint

Download or read book Short Lectures to Electrical Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-29 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Lectures to Electrical There short Lectures require a word, by way of preface, to explain that they were not in any way intended as a connected exposition of even elementary principles of electro-technics. Being desirous that practical training should be supplemented by some attention to theory, Mr. R. E. B. Crompton requested me to give during the past winter some Lectures on subjects connected with the princi ples underlying modern electrical engineering to the pupils and workmen associated with his firm, and the following pages contain the transcript of these Lectures delivered at Chelmsford. Confident that the right direction for technical training is to bring home to the craftsman the scientific principles involved in daily work which passes under his hands, the subjects which most naturally claimed attention were those involved in everyday experience of the audience addressed. It is with the hope that the elementary ex planations here given may be useful to other similar practical students, and as introductory to larger treatises. Book Electrical Engineering

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electrical Engineering: First Course A text-book in electrical engineering emanating from Union College may be the occasion of some surprise to those who have been conversant with the development Of the electrical course in that institution. The authors have, it is true', recorded their Objections to the use Of a prescribed text. These Objections still hold good. In brief, they are, first, that a prescribed text tends to take the life out Of the class room, whether the course be con ducted by lectures or recitations, and second, that it tends to take the life out Of the study by relieving the student Of responsibility of continued effort. At Union College the fundamental aim is that the student Shall first comprehend, and then create. Comprehension comes through directed effort. This, the student acquires readily in the laboratory, but in the class room, it is not SO easy. The recitation falls short because it deals with the individual rather than the class. The lecture fails when the student knows he can fall back upon the text-book. The fault, however, is not with the text-book itself, but with the use that is made Of it. Obviously, then, its proper use is as a means Of directing the student's effort toward comprehension. Indeed, it Should com pel effort, not in order to make up for an author's failure to ex press himself clearly, but in order that the ideas Shall sink in and make permanent impressions on the mind. The book Should, therefore, be SO constructed and used that it shall be an additional aid to the student in creating his own expression Of the ideas with which he is brought into contact in the lecture, the recitation and the laboratory. It is desirable that fundamental ideas shall become fixed and clear in the student's mind as soon as possible, thus leaving him in a position to exert his full mental effort on that which is more advanced. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Course of Lectures on Electricity: Delivered Before the Society of Arts The researches of our philosophers in a worthy manner is no easy task, and requires a special aptitude, and I have felt that to attempt such a work was a bold undertaking. Admirable works of this character on some of the sister sciences have already appeared; but in the science of electricity there has been a vacant space, which I have done my best to try to fill up. These lectures have no pretension to form an exhaustive treatise on electricity; but I trust they may be found to be a useful introduction' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Electrical Engineering: A First Year's Course for Students Within a remarkably short space of time electrical engineering has been so largely and widely developed that it now stands in the very forefront of engineering industries. We find electricity everywhere supplanting the older forms of power, and it bids fair to revolutionise the older systems of traction in the near future. Already many railways are working, or are about to be worked, electrically, while many more are in course of construction on the same lines. Book A Short University Course in Electricity Sound and Light Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Short University Course in Electricity Sound and Light Classic Reprint written by Robert Andrews Millikan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short University Course in Electricity, Sound, and Light This book represents primarily an attempt to secure a satisfactory articulation of the laboratory and class-room phases of instruction in physics. It is an outgrowth of the conviction that in courses of intermediate grade in colleges, universities, and engineering schools a real insight into the methods of physics, and a thorough grasp of its foundation principles are not readily gained unless theory is presented in immediate connection with such concrete laboratory problems as are calculated to give the student a sound basis for intelligent theoretical work. Nevertheless the book is intended to be much more than a laboratory manual. It represents an attempt to present a complete logical development, from the standpoint of theory as well as experiment, of the subjects indicated in the title. It is designed to occupy a half year of daily work, two hours per day, in either the freshman, sophomore, or junior years of the college or technical-school course. In the University of Chicago about one half of this time is devoted to class discussions, lecture-table demonstrations, quizzes, and problems, and the remainder to laboratory work. The course is preferably preceded by a similar course in mechanics, molecular physics, and heat, the two courses together constituting a year's work in college physics. The method of treatment is throughout analytical rather than descriptive, although no mathematics beyond trigonometry is presupposed. It is assumed that the student has already had a beginning course in descriptive physics in the high school or elsewhere. Book Practical Electricity

Download or read book Practical Electricity written by W. E. Ayrton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Electricity: Laboratory and Lecture Course, for First Year Students of Electrical Engineering One of the great difficulties experienced by people in mastering the quantitative science of electricity, arises from the fact that we do not number an electrical sense among our other senses, and hence we have no intuitive perception of electrical phenomena. During childhood we did not have years of unconscious experimenting with electrical forces as we had with the forces connected with the sensations of heaviness and lightness, loudness and softness, heat and cold. Beyond a shock or two taken perhaps from some medical galvanic apparatus, or from a Leyden jar, our senses have never been affected by electrical action, and hence we ought to begin the study of electricity as a child begins its early education. Quite an infant has distinct ideas about hot and cold, although it may not be 'able to put its ideas into words, and yet many a student of electricity of mature years has but the haziest notions of the exact meaning of high and low potential, the electrical analogues of hot and cold. That it is desirable that students should learn physics, as they learn to ride the bicycle, by experiment ing themselves, is now generally admitted, and this is especially true in the case of electricity, since it is by experimenting, and only by experimenting, that a student can obtain such a real grasp of electricity that its laws become, so to say, a part of his nature. Hence, in the courses of electricity which I arranged at the City and Guilds of London Technical College, Finsbury, and at their Central Institution, for every hour that a student spends at lecture, he spends several in the laboratory. Download or read book An Introduction to Electricity Classic Reprint written by Bruno Kolbe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Electricity The book, therefore, seems to me admirably adapted for the instruction of a class, but there is another point of view from which it may be regarded. If the man in the street, or, in other words, a person of ordinary information and intelligence who has passed through the ordinary school curriculum, wishes to obtain some insight into the nature of electricity, there is hardly any English book at present to which he can be referred. Diagrammatic descriptions of machines for the commercial pro duction of electrical energy will hardly help him to what he wants, nor will the analysis of compli cated instruments, like Lord Kelvin's multicellular voltmeter. Here, on the other hand, he should find many simple experiments, which, even without actually performing them, should give him, when read, a fair apprehension of the laws they are intended to illustrate, and should enable him to appreciate the many popular lectures now delivered on the subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Electric Traction: For Motormen and Others Elements OF electric traction is based upon a short series of lectures and practical demonstrations which have been given by the Author during the last two years to a class of motormen and others at the Leeds Institute Technical School. During these lectures and the subsequent period the writer has had repeated inquiries for a suitable textbook, and while he has recommended from time to time books dealing with the Elements of Electrical Engineering, as well as Handbooks for Motormen, he has always found a need for a book dealing in a simple manner with the fundamental, mechanical, and electrical principles underlying electric traction. To fill this need this work has been written. The work is intended to serve as an introduction to the more advanced works on electric traction, and to supplement the informa tion given in the various Handbooks for Motormen and others.
