Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short History of the Presbyterian Church in the Dominion of Canada: From the Earliest to the Present Time Short History published a large volume containing the history of the Presbyterian Church in Canada, brought down to the year 1834. He intended to publish one or two similar volumes bringing down the history to a later time. This purpose, however, he will, very probably, not be able to accomplish. Meanwhile, he has thought it would be useful to publish an outline of the leading particulars in the history of the Presbyterian Church in the Dominion from the earliest to the present time. Such an outline he has endeavoured to give in this little volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Presbyterian Church in the Dominion of Canada: From the Earliest Times to 1834; With a Chronological Table of Events to the Present Time, and Map This volume is chiefly devoted to the earlier portion of the history of the Presbyterian Church in the Dominion. When commencing to write this history I hoped to be able to complete it in a single volume of moderate size. As materials accumulated it seemed better to reserve the latter portion for a future publication. But as I may not be able to complete the work for several years - perhaps never - I subjoin to the present volume a chronological table exhibiting leading events in the later as well as the earlier portion of the history. This table, along with numerous items of information respecting events of later dates contained in this volume, may serve, in the meantime, to furnish a comprehensive view of the whole history of the Church. The earlier portion of the history terminates with the year 1834, close of which there were eight distinct presbyteries or synods in the Dominion. In connection with each of these steps were taken about this time to ascertain the state of congregations and mission-fields in all the Provinces. Journals and reports were in consequence prepared and published, summaries of which are given in different chapters in this volume. These will enable the reader to form an estimate of the state of Presbyterianism in the Dominion half a century ago, and to compare it with its present position as exhibited in the chronological table. Of all, or nearly all, the Presbyterian ministers who laboured in the Dominion previous to 1835 brief biographical sketches are given in this volume. Book The Free Church in Victorian Canada 1844 1861

Download or read book The Free Church in Victorian Canada 1844 1861 written by Richard W. Vaudry and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a wide range of church records, pamphlets, private papers, and periodicals, Richard Vaudry has written an authoritative study of the formation and development of the Free Church in mid-Victorian Canada. He traces the institutional development of the denomination, its intellectual life, and its attitudes to contemporary political and social questions and describes, another subjects, missionary activity, theological education, worship, and the denomination's union with the United Presbyterian Synod in 1861. This important work depicts a progressive church where men such as George Brown, Isaac Buchanan, and John Redpath could all find a home. The author argues that undergirding the life of the Free Church was an evangelical-Calvinist world view which determined the shape and direction of its activities. His book illuminates an important facet of the religious and intellectual relationship between Scotland and Canada, and should be of interest to students and scholars of Canadian and Church history.
