Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Great God values not the service of men, if the heart be not in it: The Lord sees and judges the heart; he has no regard to outward forms of worship, if there be no inward adoration, if no devout affection be employed therein. It is therefore a matter of infinite importance, to have the whole heart engaged steadfastly to God."- Isaac Watts "Do not spend the day in gathering flowers by the way side, lest night come upon you before you arrive at your journey's end, and then you will not reach it." Isaac Watts, Logic: The Right Use of Reason in the Inquiry After Truth "Isaac Watts - 'the Father of the English Hymn,' as his tombstone in Bunhill Fields records - was born at Southampton, July 17, 1674, and died on November 25, 1748. He was only five feet in height, and of feeble physique throughout his life; but he left behind him nearly five hundred hymns and paraphrases, many of which are amongst the most cherished treasures of public and private devotion. His versifications of the Psalms include such noble lines as 'Our God, our help in ages past' (altered, but not improved, by John Wesley to 'O God, our help in ages past), and 'Jesus shall reign where'er the sun.' It should not be forgotten that Dr. Watts - who was a bachelor - was the author of those never-to-be-forgotten infantile rhymes: 'How doth the little busy bee,' and 'Let dogs delight to bark and bite." -The Musical Times, Volume 43, 1902

Book Gospel Music or the Singing of David s Psalms

Download or read book Gospel Music or the Singing of David s Psalms written by Nathaniel Holmes and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2012-12-10 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This famous 17th century tract is a demonstration of the nature and necessity of singing the Psalms of David in private (at home) and in corporate worship (with the congregation), something that began to be contested in his own day. Holmes covers six areas that teach the church how to think about Psalm singing: 1) the warrant that we have coming from the word of God to do so; 2) its unquestionable nature through the history of the church; 3) the ancient use of singing; 4) the usefulness of singing the Psalms of David, and 5) the objections of unjust men against psalm singing. He also adds in as an appendix the manner in which the New England churches sang Psalms. This is a very helpful introductory work to aid the Christian to think soberly about how Psalmody is handled in the word of God and for the church of Jesus Christ. This is not a scan or facsimile, has been updated in modern English for easy reading and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians know the Psalms, sing the Psalms, and pray the Psalms more than any other book of the Bible. Yet, even as believers have grown more devoted to individual psalms, they have lost the big picture-the single sense that unites all the psalms as one coherent book. Michael Barber is at the forefront of an emerging movement in biblical theology. With this book, he is recovering the narrative plot that was the common heritage of Jews and Christians in the ancient world. Barber shows how King David serves as an example for the chosen people as they struggled in exile. As David was rescued by the Lord, so would Israel be restored as a kingdom for all ages. This is the story of Christ as well, whom Barber reveals as the "new David." And, in Christ, it is the story of every Christian. The Psalms bring us-in our reading and in our prayer-from suffering and pleading to glory, triumph, and praise. Barber's analysis follows upon an extensive introduction by Scott Hahn, Ph.D., detailing the historical, cultural, and theological background of the Psalter.
