Book excerpt: An important aspect of wind power plant (WPP) impact studies is to evaluate short-circuit current (SCC) contribution of the plant into the transmission network under different fault conditions. This information is needed to size the circuit breakers, to establish the proper system protection, and to choose the transient suppressor in the circuits within the WPP. This task can be challenging to protection engineers due to the topology differences between different types of wind turbine generators (WTGs) and the conventional generating units. This paper investigates the short-circuit behavior of a WPP for different types of wind turbines.

Book Investigating Short Circuit Models for Wind Turbine Generators

Download or read book Investigating Short Circuit Models for Wind Turbine Generators written by Malati Chaudhary and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short circuit study needs to be performed at the planning stage before connecting large generators with the electric grid. This study will reveal the impact of new generation on the fault levels of the grid. The fault levels will determine the rating of nearby equipment and setting of relays. However, a short circuit model of synchronous generator is well documented, such models are not adequately known for Wind Turbine Generators (WTGs). This dissertation describes detailed time domain models of all types of WTGs, commonly classified as Type 1, Type 2, type 3, and Type 4. MOdels of Type 1, 2, and 3 are validated using field data. Using these models, short circuit models are developed. Simulation and short circuit modeling of Type 2 WTG and wind farms having this type of WTGs are validated using actual field data from Mountain wind farm located in Wyoming, USA. Some insight into the selection of circuit breakers in the wind farm is also offered. A simple yet accurate equivalencing procedure for large wind farms is also proposed. This analysis also applies to Type 1 WTG. Simulation and short circuit modeling of Type 3 WTG and wind farms having this type of WTGs are developed. This model assumes that the rotor circuit is crowbarred during fault. The model is validated using actual field data from Three Buttes wind farm in Wyoming, USA. Valuable insight about the status of crowbar during faults is achieved through this model.

Book Modeling of Wind Parks for Steady State Short Circuit Studies

Download or read book Modeling of Wind Parks for Steady State Short Circuit Studies written by Thomas Kauffmann and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing share of renewable energy resources in electricity generation requires reassessment of protection systems. This is due to the fact that renewables are often electronically coupled to the grid and their behavior under transient conditions is different from the behavior of power plants generating power using classical synchronous generators. The behavior of electronically coupled generators depends on the controllers of their converters, and in principle, their precise simulation under short-circuit conditions is possible using dynamic or transient tools which allow detailed modeling of controllers. However, protection and short-circuit software packages used by practicing engineers depend on steady-state solution engines built in phasor domain. The main objective of this thesis is to develop steady-state phasor models of wind and solar parks that provide their current contribution under steady-state short-circuit conditions. The steady-state models are developed for type-III and type-IV wind turbine generators. Negative sequence control and park controller options are also considered. The Type-IV model can also be used for modeling solar plants since both sources are connected via full converters. The steady-state models are validated using a detailed time-domain model that is developed in EMTP-RV software with the feedback of a leading European manufacturer of wind turbines. The phasor models take into account the behavior of converter conrollers and various control strategies associated with it. For large-scale wind parks connected to high voltage networks, the point of control is located at the point of interconnection of the park. The control strategies act on voltage, reactive power or power factor. In addition to these three control modes, a fault ride through mode is also available to support voltage during fault conditions. A current limiter protects the converters against overcurrent, and operates with P- or Q-priority. This limiter is indispensable but introduces a non-linear behavior. The phasor models take into account the natural negative sequence response of the wind turbine generator with two levels of precision if the controllers are not set to regulate negative sequence : simplified and detailed. Higher precision requires more details about the controller, such as the gains of the inner loop proportional-integral controller.

Download or read book Short Circuit Modeling and Protection Implementation for a Type 3 Wind Turbine Generator Facility Using ASPEN OneLiner written by Christopher Zubia and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thesis presented on addressing the modeling requirements for short circuit contributions from Type 3 wind turbine generators. This research can be used by electric utilities for transmission level protective relay coordinating using the ASPEN OneLiner software. This thesis will discuss four different short circuit modeling approaches which can be used for interconnected groups of Type 3 wind turbine generators and their implementation into a short circuit software model. These approaches' fault current outputs will be compared with the fault current results from the traditional full detail model approach. This research also sheds light on the protection practices the transmission utility can use to protect their transmission lines when interconnected with a wind turbine generating facility. The distance and differential schemes presented in this document are validated through the OneLiner software.

Book Analysis of Short Circuit Current Contribution for Wind Turbine Generators

Download or read book Analysis of Short Circuit Current Contribution for Wind Turbine Generators written by Prof. Chintan Mehta and published by . This book was released on 2019-02-24 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The electrical energy generation is the growth engine of any nation. Till last decade, the electrical power generation was basically produced by thermal energy but due to environmental impacts the focus of electrical energy generation shifts towards renewable energy sources. Out of various renewable sources available for electrical energy generation, the main focus is on wind and solar energy to generate the electrical energy. Penetration of wind energy is increased exponentially, but as compared with conventional energy it is highly intermittent in nature. It is a challenge to synchronize the wind energy in to the conventional power grid. In this thesis, short-circuit current is calculated as per IEC-60909 and it is veried using PSCAD/EMTDC software fora single machine connected to a single load. The standard IEEE 14 Bus system is analyzed using PSCAD/EMTDC. In standard IEEE 14 Bus system, MVA method is used for calculating the short circuit current under 3 phase to ground fault condition and it is veried using PSCAD/EMTDC for all the buses. The single circuit model is introduced to analyze the concept of asymmetrical fault current. The behavior of Synchronous machine, Induction machine and doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) are analyzed under the 3 phase to ground symmetrical fault condition. The short circuit current contribution of DFIG is calculated analytically and the same is validated by PSCAD/EMTDC software under various wind speeds and by considering certain voltage drops of the generator output. The behavior of DFIG and conventional induction generator is analyzed during steady-state and faulty condition under the comparable ratings and parameters. The IEEE 1547 and Indian grid code standard with Low Voltage Ride Through (LVRT) is analyzed or WTGs.

Book Short circuit Currents in Wind turbine Generator Networks

Download or read book Short circuit Currents in Wind turbine Generator Networks written by Dustin F. Howard and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protection of both the wind plant and the interconnecting transmission system during short-circuit faults is imperative for maintaining system structural integrity and reliability. The circuit breakers and protective relays used to protect the power system during such events are designed based upon calculations of the current that will flow in the circuit during the fault. Sequence-network models of various power-system components, such as synchronous generators, transformers, transmission lines, etc., are often used to perform these calculations. However, there are no such models widely accepted for certain types of wind-turbine generators used in modern wind plants. The problem with developing sequence-network models of wind plants is that several different wind-turbine generator designs exist; yet, each exhibit very different short-circuit behavior. Therefore, a "one size fits all" approach is not appropriate for modeling wind plants, as has been the case for conventional power plants based on synchronous-generator technology. Further, many of the newer wind-turbine designs contain proprietary controls that affect the short-circuit behavior, and wind-turbine manufacturers are often not willing to disclose these controls. Thus, protection engineers do not have a standard or other well-established model for calculating short-circuit currents in power systems with wind plants. Therefore, the research described in this dissertation involves the development of such models for calculating short-circuit currents from wind-turbine generators. The focus of this dissertation is on the four existing wind-turbine generator designs (identified as Types 1 -- 4). Only AC-transmission-interconnected wind-turbine generators are considered in this dissertation. The primary objective of this research is the development of sequence-network models, which are frequency-domain analysis tools, for each wind-turbine generator design. The time-domain behavior of each wind-turbine generator is thoroughly analyzed through transient simulations, experimental tests on scaled wind-turbine generator test beds, and solutions to the system dynamic equations. These time-domain analyses are used to support the development of the sequence-network models.

This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Engineering - Power Engineering, grade: 9, , language: English, abstract: The rising demand of electricity and the environmental concern in the recent past necessities the need of renewable energy sources. The Renewable energy sources have gained major importance due to the depletion of the conventional fuels in the future. Among the available renewable sources the Wind energy has gained a significant importance due to its high efficiency and pollution free nature. Large Wind Farms have been set up to meet the energy demand globally. The capacity of the Wind Turbine Generator is being increased gradually from a few KW capacities in the beginning rising up to almost 5 MW in the present. More research has to be carried in this field to make it a dominant source for the rising energy demand. Wind energy potential has to be harnessed on a large scale in places which have high wind density. Before the actual commissioning of the Wind Farm on site, a wide range of analysis has to be carried in terms of simulation. This is done to understand the behavior of the system under various conditions and preventive actions if any are to be taken. The pre analysis gives us an idea of the selection of devices for higher efficiency and system reliability. This project is a research work carried in ETAP (Electrical Transient Analyzer Program), which is a Power System Simulation tool. The analysis carried out to demonstrate the capabilities of the SCIG (Squirrel Cage Induction Generator) based Wind Farm include Load Flow analysis, to find out the Power transferred to the Grid in normal condition at rated Wind Speed. Active Power Output at various Wind Speeds, which presents the efficiency of the Wind Farm at various range of wind speeds. Short Circuit analysis which is essential to determine the capability of the Wind Farm to recover from any abnormal conditions. Harmonic analysis to determine the Quality of power being delivered and the Harmonic Filter design to mitigate the Harmonic content if any in excess.Reactive Power analysis which is important considering the stability of the system and a suitable Capacitor design for reactive Power compensation. The WTG (Wind Turbine Generator) considered was a Type 2 Variable speed SCIG of 2.1 MW assigned in ETAP. The Wind Farm consisted of a total of 20 WTG’s with a total capacity of 42 MW. The results obtained were compared with the theoretical values and were found to be the same. The analysis performed presented a clear indication of the future of Wind Energy in SCIG based Wind Farms.
