Book Co operatives and Poverty Alleviation

Download or read book Co operatives and Poverty Alleviation written by Jovin A. Banturaki and published by Tema Publishers Company. This book was released on 2000 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the co-operative disbandment in 1976 co-ops were recognised as rural development promoters and vehicles for rural transformation. However since the co-operative re-establishment in 1982 to the present time that previous identity has been greatly eroded due to operational setbacks, mismanagement, confusion, and misdirection. This book is the result of a study of twenty-four randomly selected primary co-op societies in four regions. Part one introduces the study giving background information on the research problem and question, and outlines the objectives and hypotheses, the research methodology, and the main features of the sample population. Part two deals with co-operative theory and the practice of co-operation. The research findings and accompanying analysis make up the third party and the majority of the study, while the fourth part discusses the studies results paying particular attention to cop-operative potential in rural development and the governments efforts towards the co-op revival. The fifth part concludes with recommendations on emerging policy implications and on the future of co-ops as instruments for poverty alleviation.

Book Making Farmers Co Operatives Work

Download or read book Making Farmers Co Operatives Work written by Tushaar Shah and published by SAGE Publications Pvt. Limited. This book was released on 1996-02-23 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The author has to be commended for undertaking this most analytical and useful work. Indeed it is a welcome addition to the literature on cooperatives." --National cooperative Development Corporation Bulletin "This study offers a practical lesson in the process of exploring the strategy for improving the general performance of village co-operatives. In that sense the book is highly valuable1⁄4. It provides a unique reference for guiding researchers, planners, policy makers, leaders and managers." --Deccan Herald "This is a book which is a must for all co-operators." --Kisan World "Tushaar Shah's book Making Farmers' Co-operative Work sparkles. For seldom do books on cooperatives go beyond a stereotyped pile up of facts and observations loosely held together with the glue of analysis relating to a few successful cases instead of undertaking a broad, incisive and complete study... The writer adroitly infuses new thinking and concept into his work with an immaculate sense of timing and the touch of an artist... [At] a time when cooperatives are subjected to pressures of the new economic policy, policy makers, planners and leaders can make ample use of ideas expressed by the author in designing a cooperative. The type of methodology used by the author can be used for the study of coops in other states and also different types of cooperatives. This will not only enhance the value of this work, but also provide a fertile ground for testing his theories, views and theses." --The Cooperator Making Farmers' Cooperatives Work offers an alternative approach to the study of cooperatives and presents a new theory, based on empirical evidence to explain why cooperatives and village organizations succeed or fail. The author, Tushaar Shah presents his theoretical framework in a concise manner, analyzing the performance and limitations of a village cooperative based on a review of 50 case studies. This model has advantages over existing approaches because of its emphasis on central tendencies rather than on extremes, for its explanation of both successes and failures, and for bringing the members of cooperatives to the center of the inquiry, thus offering them a guide for positive action. Students and academics interested in regional development, cooperatives, management studies, organizational behavior, rural development, economics, policy studies, and sociology will find Making Farmers' Cooperatives Work useful and it's approach unique in the way it analyzes, taking a systems view of the cooperative enterprise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Collective Courage, Jessica Gordon Nembhard chronicles African American cooperative business ownership and its place in the movements for Black civil rights and economic equality. Not since W. E. B. Du Bois’s 1907 Economic Co-operation Among Negro Americans has there been a full-length, nationwide study of African American cooperatives. Collective Courage extends that story into the twenty-first century. Many of the players are well known in the history of the African American experience: Du Bois, A. Philip Randolph and the Ladies' Auxiliary to the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, Nannie Helen Burroughs, Fannie Lou Hamer, Ella Jo Baker, George Schuyler and the Young Negroes’ Co-operative League, the Nation of Islam, and the Black Panther Party. Adding the cooperative movement to Black history results in a retelling of the African American experience, with an increased understanding of African American collective economic agency and grassroots economic organizing. To tell the story, Gordon Nembhard uses a variety of newspapers, period magazines, and journals; co-ops’ articles of incorporation, minutes from annual meetings, newsletters, budgets, and income statements; and scholarly books, memoirs, and biographies. These sources reveal the achievements and challenges of Black co-ops, collective economic action, and social entrepreneurship. Gordon Nembhard finds that African Americans, as well as other people of color and low-income people, have benefitted greatly from cooperative ownership and democratic economic participation throughout the nation’s history.

Book Cooperatives As Hybrid Approach to Pull Off Sustainable Development and Livelihoods

Download or read book Cooperatives As Hybrid Approach to Pull Off Sustainable Development and Livelihoods written by Muthumariappan Karthikeyan and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cooperatives are an old idea, but one that is more relevant than ever if we look ahead at the development challenges and opportunities the world faces over the coming decades and they have the necessary reach and are being a key vehicle for sustainable livelihoods. This paper is an analytical review made by desk research of Cooperatives on the realization of sustainable development goals for livelihoods of people. Cooperatives help create more equitable growth by generating economics of scale, and improving bargaining power; tackle rural poverty by increasing the productivity and incomes of small scale farmers; expand poor people's access to financial services, can provide a range of services such as health care, housing and utilities; provide an opportunity for self determination and empowerment of poor people and enable their members to have a voice and participate in a democratic process, thus having empowering development effects beyond their economic benefits. Co-operatives can help with conflict resolution, peace-building, social inclusion and social cohesion because they bring together people of different religious and ethnic groups they can build trust and solidarity leading to greater social stability. By considering the evidences on the contributions and achievements made by Cooperatives in all sectors of economy and in all aspects of the life of people, cooperatives are considered as hybrid approach that makes it more acquiescent than other business models to pull off sustainable development and livelihoods of world community.
