Book Shop Mathematics

Download or read book Shop Mathematics written by Edward E. Holton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shop Mathematics This book is the result of twelve years' experience as draftsman and shop foreman combined with an equal length of service as instructor in day and evening classes in technical and trades schools. The main feature of the book is the collection of practical shop problems, the most of them being either actual problems which have arisen in the author's experience or those suggested by that experience, and were first collected for use in his own classes. The formulas given are those usually found in mechanics hand books, and the author acknowledges his indebtedness to Wm. Kent and P. Lobbin for permission to use their formulas; also to Brown & Sharpe Mfg. Co. for courtesies extended, and especially to Mr. C. S. Bragdon of the Technical High School, Springfield, Massachusetts, for assistance in collecting and arranging material. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Machine-Shop Mathematics Work Presupposed. The student is supposed to have covered the work laid down in the authors' Fundamentals of Practical Mathematics, or its equivalent, and therefore to be familiar with the use of whole numbers, common fractions, decimals, per cents, proportion, and the common tables of measure as applied to practical problems. While it is not an absolute essential that the student should have mastered the slide rule or should be thoroughly acquainted with the elements of trigonometry and with the metric system, it is desirable that he should have at least a fair working knowledge of these subjects. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shop Mathematics, Vol. 2: Advanced Shop Mathematics; Prepared in the Extension Division of the University of Wisconsin This volume presents the second half of the instruction papers in Shop Mathematics as developed and used in the Extension Division of the University of Wisconsin. In it the authors have endeavored to present such of the principles of algebra, geometry, trigonometry and logarithms as have been found to be of prac tical value in the shop, showing some of the better known applica tions and making the presentation as practical as seemed possible. Experience in the teaching of this course for over five years shows that it has been successful in developing in the student ability to apply the principles to his own shop problems and in giving him a good mathematical preparation for advanced technical study. It is here presented in the belief that it will be found suitable for home study and for use as a text in trade schools, technical high schools and continuation schools. Book Shop Problems in Mathematics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Shop Problems in Mathematics Classic Reprint written by William Edwin Breckenridge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shop Problems in Mathematics The aim of this book is twofold: first, to impart to the student information in regard to shops and shop materials, including the names of the parts of machines used in wood working and metal working; second, to give a thorough training in the mathematical Operations that are useful in shop practice and science. A book of this size cannot be a treatise, but can deal only with the most important points in Shop work. The cuts of the lathes, planers, band saw, and milling machine will be found useful in teaching the names of the parts of these machines and in illustrating the mathematical problems. To the problems sufficient theory has been added to make the book useful as a textbook in courses in shop mathematics. For training in mathematical Operations a certain amount of drill is necessary on abstract work - problems without content - s - to concentrate attention on the operations and develop speed and accuracy in computation. For this pur pose the latter part of the book is devoted to a Review of Calculation. It is desirable that some of this abstract work should be studied every day in connection with the concrete problems. The slide rule has been treated at length because the authors believe that it should be in more common use. Emphasis has been laid on short methods and on checks. In the chapter on Ratio and Proportion athletic fields have been used as interesting subjects of work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shop Mathematics: A Treatise on Applied Mathematics Dealing With Various Machine-Shop and Tool-Room Problems, and Containing Numerous Examples Illustrating Their Solution and the Practical Application of Useful Rules and Formulas Many of the more elementary subjects, such as addition, multiplication, division, etc., have been omitted, as prac tically all skilled men and most apprentices possess this rudi mentary knowledge. But, in view of the fact that calculating 3 not a regular part of the shop man's work and he is liable to become rusty even in some of the simpler branches of arithmetic, a few elementary subjects which often prove stumbling blocks have been included, such, for example, as the multiplication and division of common and decimal fractions, proportion, involution and evolution, and percentage. Download or read book Shop Mathematics Vol 1 written by Earle B. Norris and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shop Mathematics, Vol. 1: Shop Arithmetic, Prepared in the Extension Division of the University of Wisconsin The aim of this book is to teach the fundamental principles of mathematics to shop men, using familiar terms and processes, and giving such applications to shop problems as will maintain the interest of the student and develop in him an ability to apply the mathematical and scientific principles to his every day problems of the shop. The problems and applications relate largely to the metal working trades. It has, however, been the aim in preparing this volume not to apply the work to these particular trades so closely but that it shall be of interest and value to men in other lines of industry. This volume presents the first half of the instruction papers in Shop Mathematics as developed and used by the Extension Division of the University of Wisconsin. As here offered, it embodies the point of view obtained through apprenticeship and shop experience as well as the experience gained through its use during the past four years as a text for both correspondence and class room instruction. It is believed that the book will be found suitable for home study and for use as a text in trade, industrial, and continuation schools. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Shop Mechanics and Mathematics The following notes are the results of efforts to secure for the mechanic and the student of the trades a concise and clear arrangement of those simpler branches of applied mechanics, and the mathematics directly related to them, that pertain to actual shop conditions. The notes are based upon teaching experience among these tradesmen and upon shop practice covering a period of nine years. All notes have been in use in evening schools and in technical and trade schools, and have been thoroughly tried out with a very gratifying success. Every effort has been made to convey a correct under standing to the student, and in all cases rules and formulas are illustrated by practical examples, the solutions of which are worked out in detail. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eighth Grade Mathematics It has been assumed that the school work-shop, drawing room, and laboratory would furnish opportunity to apply mathematics and that it was not necessary to exhaust every possible application in the mathematics class. The authors have been aware of the popular demand for a closer union of algebra and geometry, but have recognized that demand only when the union came about naturally and would assist the mathematical sequence desired. Instructors ln the wood shop, pattern shops, machine shop, drawing rooms, chemistry, physics, and electrical laboratories, etc. Have furnished examples of mathematical application incident to the respective subjects. Hundreds of problems arising in the industries, have been brought in by the machinists, sheet metal workers, carpenters, electrical workers, pattern makers, draughtsmen, etc., etc., coming to the evening and continuation classes. Complete charts of machine shop work and electrical distribution requirements have been made, including a statement of the required sequence of mathematics. All of this material has been classified, with a View to the mathematical sequence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This system will be followed in many of the following formulas, and it should therefore be remembered that the line between the numerator and denominator in a fraction always indicates a division, the numerator to be divided by the denominator. The actual division, however, is not necessarily worked out in every case where division is thus implied. When two divisions are multi plied together, cancellation and the following operations Of addition or subtraction may make the actual numerical work very simple. True, many good mechanics get along with only enough mathematical knowledge to count up their wages, but the men who get to the top are not those who depend on others to tell them what gears to use, or the depth of a 9-pitch thread. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New and Easy Introduction to the Mathematics The author is aware that there is a number of works. Of this nature already in use, in different parts of this country. It does not appear, however, that any one of them is now, or is likely very soon to be, in general use in schools throughout the united-states; and hence it may be infered that none of them have met the approbation of the public, generally. The author is not disposed to ex patiate on the defects of those systems, nor on the merits of his own; being persuaded that enlightened persons will examine and judge for themselves, and that his work, as well as others, must stand or fall, according to its real merit or demerit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Unified Mathematics This text presents a course in elementary mathematics adapted to the needs of students in the freshman year of an ordinary college or technical school course, and of students in the first year of a junior college. The material Of the text includes the essential and vital features of the work commonly covered in the past in separate courses in college algebra, trigonometry, and analytical geometry. The fundamental idea of the development is to emphasize the fact that mathematics cannot be artificially divided into compartments with separate labels, as we have been in the habit of doing, and to Show the essential unity and harmony and interplay between the two great fields into which mathematics may properly be divided; via, analysis and geometry.
