  • Pages : 370 pages

Download or read book Survive a Shooting written by Alain Burrese and published by Tgw Books. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Active Shooter is all too common a phrase in the news these days. It is sad and terrible that we even have something to describe these horrific acts. The reality is that we live in a world that can, at times, be quite dangerous. The good news is that you do have options. You don't have to be a helpless victim! There are things you can learn to increase your survivability! This book will teach you how you can survive. Alain's unique methodology of Escape, Deny, and Attack Back is based on the central principle: you have to MOVE! Surviving a shooting is not a linear process as others would suggest, and this book will teach you when and how to Escape safely, how to Deny the shooter access to you if you can't escape, and how to successfully work alone, or as a team, to Attack Back and bring the killer down. Hiding and hoping isn't a plan and will likely get you killed. Learn to survive! This book is designed to save lives! Advance Praise: "Alain Burrese has written the definitive guide to mass shootings-and how to maximize your chances of surviving one. And the common-sense steps he recommends aren't just relevant for shootings-they're well calibrated to help you keep yourself and your family safe generally." - Barry Eisler "I have been studying the problem of active killer response for more than two decades. I've read every book available on the subject and have both attended and taught countless classes on the topic. Without question, Alain's book is the absolute best reference for active killer response available on the market today. His advice is both thorough and driven by industry best practices. If you want to learn how to prevail in an active killer attack, you need this book in your library." - Greg Ellifritz "Way back in the 1990's, Alain Burrese established himself as a leading thinker in self-defense circles when he published Hard-Won Wisdom from the School of Hard Knocks. In the intervening years, Alain has continued to learn, grow, research, publish, and teach. I had the privilege to read a draft of his latest book, Survive a Shooting, which you now hold in your hands. Succinct, clear and accurate are just what I expect from Alain. Survive A Shooting offers something else. Instead of jacking up the fear to create a market, Alain took a potentially terrifying subject and created a calming, empowering book. Yes, it's bad Alain points out. But there are things you can do. You are not helpless. That's the defining message of this very useful book. I hate touchy feely jargon, but Survive a Shooting is empowering. The kind of book that leaves you a little stronger, a little more ready." - Rory Miller "Survive a Shooting is a must read for anyone that may have to engage an active shooter or mass murderer. Alain did a great job detailing the history of mass shooting situations and what we must be prepared for in the future; as well as what we can do to mitigate this ominous threat." - Dr. Dale Comstock "The CIA trains operatives to survive in hostile environments. Survive A Shooting trains people to survive active threats. Putting the knowledge in this book to use could literally save your life." - Jason Hanson "No one wants to be a victim, yet learning how to successfully defend against an armed threat can be a significant challenge. Nevertheless, with the right training it's a surmountable one. If I was going to put my life (or a member of my family's) in someone else's hands during an active shooting, I can think of no better person to safeguard it than Alain Burrese. His knowledge, experience, and pragmatic approach create powerful, trustworthy advice that everyone must know." - Lawrence Kane

Book Surviving a Rural High School Shooting

Download or read book Surviving a Rural High School Shooting written by Dr. Irene Barry and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2018-11-27 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On December 7, 2017, life changed at Aztec High School, Aztec, New Mexico. Life was normal at 8:00 a.m. with students and staff arriving, but little did we know that in fifteen minutes, our lives would be changed forever. As a school, we were very lucky! This is one teacher's perspective on what happened that day. No matter where you are in the school, this affects you. Social media plays into this because all kinds of reports are going over media immediately with untruths about the situation, making it even worse for our children in the classrooms. There is an increase in school shooting. In 2018, as of January 25, there has been eleven school shootings, including high school shootings in Marshall High School in Kentucky, resulting in two dead and sixteen injured, and also in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Texas. This is unacceptable! The number one rule in education is that public schools are supposed to be safe for all employees and students. This is not the case, and the issue now is epidemic, with very innocent children losing their lives. It is devastating to watch an event like this unfold and change students, parents, teachers, administrators, and staff's lives all across the United States. There is nothing worse than worrying about the students who you become acquainted with and love, worrying about whether they are going to make it through an event like this. As Americans, we need to object to our public schools not being safe and need to put in strategies and protocol for all schools to know how to handle a situation such as this and stop this from happening to our children. With the addition of active shooting training as well as increased security and NRA measures, our schools may become safer. At least it is a start.

Book Lockdown Drills

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jaclyn Schildkraut
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2022-09-06
  • ISBN : 0262544164
  • Pages : 229 pages

Download or read book Lockdown Drills written by Jaclyn Schildkraut and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-09-06 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive resource on what lockdown drills are, why they are necessary, and how best to conduct them. The first book to offer a comprehensive examination of lockdown drills in K–12 schools, Lockdown Drills balances research findings with practical applications and implications. Schildkraut and Nickerson, school safety experts with complementary backgrounds in criminology and school psychology, review the historical precedents for lockdown drills, distinguish school lockdowns from other emergency procedures (such as active shooter drills), explain why they are conducted, present evidence-based research on their effectiveness, and describe how to conduct them according to best practices. Proponents of lockdown drills as a life-saving necessity, the authors help to bring much-needed standardization to how these drills are studied and conducted. The authors present common arguments for and against the inclusion of lockdown drills in emergency preparedness efforts, balancing their discussion of the perceptions and psychological impacts of lockdown drills with scholarly research on the extent to which lockdown drills improve how effectively individuals respond to a potential threat. Placing lockdown drills in the larger context of school safety and preparedness, they examine the broader implications for policymakers. Finally, they emphasize that drills, of which lockdowns are only one type, are just a part of the complex school safety puzzle. Ensuring that schools are safe places for students and educators begins long before a crisis occurs and continues through the days, weeks, and years of recovery following a crisis.

Book The Violence Project

Download or read book The Violence Project written by Jillian Peterson and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Groundbreaking." ―Rachel Louise Snyder, bestselling author of No Visible Bruises An examination of the phenomenon of mass shootings in America and an urgent call to implement evidence-based strategies to stop these tragedies Winner of the 2022 Minnesota Book Award Using data from the writers’ groundbreaking research on mass shooters, including first-person accounts from the perpetrators themselves, The Violence Project charts new pathways to prevention and innovative ways to stop the social contagion of violence. Frustrated by reactionary policy conversations that never seemed to convert into meaningful action, special investigator and psychologist Jill Peterson and sociologist James Densley built The Violence Project, the first comprehensive database of mass shooters. Their goal was to establish the root causes of mass shootings and figure out how to stop them by examining hundreds of data points in the life histories of more than 170 mass shooters—from their childhood and adolescence to their mental health and motives. They’ve also interviewed the living perpetrators of mass shootings and people who knew them, shooting survivors, victims’ families, first responders, and leading experts to gain a comprehensive firsthand understanding of the real stories behind them, rather than the sensationalized media narratives that too often prevail. For the first time, instead of offering thoughts and prayers for the victims of these crimes, Peterson and Densley share their data-driven solutions for exactly what we must do, at the individual level, in our communities, and as a country, to put an end to these tragedies that have defined our modern era.

Book Active Shooter Events and Response

Download or read book Active Shooter Events and Response written by John P. Blair and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-06-12 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Columbine tragedy on April 20, 1999 began a new era in law enforcement as it became apparent that the police response to such mass shootings must be drastically altered. By the time the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting occurred on December 14, 2012, outdated police response strategies had been replaced with new, aggressive tactics used by the first officers on the scene. The frequency with which these events occur remind us time and again about the importance of training and preparing for these critical situations before they occur in our own backyards. Active Shooter Events and Response is one of the first attempts to not only discuss historic active shooter events, but also to actually dissect some of them—empowering law enforcement professionals by leveraging the essential knowledge and experience of those who have gone before us. The book also offers insight into the training methodologies and strategies used to prepare our nation’s first responders to address the active shooter threat. In addition, the authors discuss the clear and present threat of terrorist organizations using these mass shooter tactics on American soil—similar to the attacks in Beslan, Russia and Mumbai, India. Written by members of the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) Center at Texas State University, this book is the culmination of more than a decade’s worth of training and research into active shooter events and represents state-of-the-art, evidence-based best practices.

Book Parkland

Download or read book Parkland written by Dave Cullen and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2019-02-12 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestseller about the extraordinary young survivors who took on the gun lobby: “One of the most uplifting books you will read all year.” —The Washington Post Back in 1999, Dave Cullen was among the first to arrive at Columbine High, even before most of the SWAT teams went in. While writing his acclaimed account of the tragedy, he suffered two bouts of secondary PTSD. He covered all the later tragedies from a distance, working with a cadre of experts cultivated from academia and the FBI, but swore he would never return to the scene of a ghastly crime. But in 2018, Cullen went to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School because something radically different was happening. After nearly twenty years witnessing the mass shooting epidemic escalate, he was stunned and awed by the courage, anger, and conviction of the high school’s students. Refusing to allow adults and the media to shape their story, these remarkable adolescents took control—pushing back against the NRA and feckless Congressional leaders, organizing the massive March for Our Lives demonstration, and inspiring millions to join their grassroots #neveragain movement. They used their grief as a catalyst for change, and galvanized a nation. Cullen unfolds the story of Parkland through the voices of key participants. Instead of taking us into the mind of the killer, he takes us into the hearts of the Douglas students as they cope with the concerns of high school students everywhere—awaiting college acceptance letters, studying for midterms, competing against their athletic rivals, putting together the yearbook, staging the musical Spring Awakening, enjoying prom—while moving forward from a horrific event that has altered them forever. Deeply researched and beautifully told, Parkland is “a moving petition to America that it not look away from the catastrophes at Columbine, Sandy Hook, Virginia Tech, and, yes, Parkland. It succeeds as an in-depth report about the ‘generational campaign’ in the aftermath of the Parkland tragedy, a bi-partisan movement advocating serious gun reform” (Atlanta Journal-Constitution). “[A] page-turner. . . . Both realistic and optimistic, this insightful and compassionate chronicle is a fitting testament to a new chapter in American responses to mass shootings.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Book excerpt: The remarkable story of David Kennedy's crusade to combat America's plague of gang- and drug-related violence - with methods that have been astonishingly effective across the country. 'If you want to read a book on urban gangs and find out why they exist and why they kill each other, read this ... this is a sociology book, but it's like immersing yourself in The Wire ... When Kennedy says something, you believe him' Scotsman Gang- and drug-related inner-city violence, with its attendant epidemic of incarceration, is the defining crime problem in our country. In some neighborhoods in America, one out of every two hundred young black men is shot to death every year, and few initiatives of government and law enforcement have made much difference. But when David Kennedy, a self-taught and then-unknown criminologist, engineered the "Boston Miracle" in the mid-1990s, he pointed the way toward what few had imagined: a solution. Don't Shoot tells the story of Kennedy's long journey. Riding with beat cops, hanging with gang members, and stoop-sitting with grandmothers, Kennedy found that all parties misunderstood each other, caught in a spiral of racialized anger and distrust. He envisioned an approach in which everyone-gang members, cops, and community members-comes together in what is essentially a huge intervention. Offenders are told that the violence must stop, that even the cops want them to stay alive and out of prison, and that even their families support swift law enforcement if the violence continues. In city after city, the same miracle has followed: violence plummets, drug markets dry up, and the relationship between the police and the community is reset. This is a landmark book, chronicling a paradigm shift in how we address one of America's most shameful social problems. A riveting, page-turning read, it combines the street vérité of The Wire, the social science of Gang Leader for a Day, and the moral urgency and personal journey of Fist Stick Knife Gun. But unlike anybody else, Kennedy shows that there could be an end in sight.
