Book Shock Versus Gradualism in Models of Rational Expectations

Download or read book Shock Versus Gradualism in Models of Rational Expectations written by Ms.Susan Mary George and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1997-09-01 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides a new argument for “shock” versus “gradualism” in the implementation of trade policies. In the simple context of a small open economy with rational expectations, we consider the comparative welfare effects of eliminating an import tariff either immediately as an unanticipated shock, or gradually over a preannounced length of time. The gradualist policy introduces a distortion in consumption-accumulation decisions and generates welfare costs. And if the gradual change is extended over “too long” a period, these costs may exceed the long-run benefits of liberalization.

This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper deals with liberalization and the evolution of output during the transition from plan to market. It explains why strong liberalization leads to a comparatively steep fall in output early in the transition, but a relatively strong recovery later on. Because it takes time to restructure the capital stock inherited from the old system, liberalization initially leads to transitional unemployment of capital and the contraction of the old enterprise sector. By making room quickly for the new, more efficient enterprises, however, liberalization also sets the stage for recovery and a much higher level of income in the medium term. Book Liberalization of Trade in Financial Services and Financial Sector Stability Empirical Approach

Download or read book Liberalization of Trade in Financial Services and Financial Sector Stability Empirical Approach written by Mr.Alexei Kireyev and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2002-08-01 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper explores empirically the links between the WTO-driven liberalization of trade in financial services and the stability of national financial systems. Econometric testing of indicators intended to proxy financial sector stability-subdivided into exchange rate and banking sector stability-suggests that opening of the financial sector is an efficient policy instrument at the disposal of the authorities for achieving a variety of macroeconomic goals. While liberalization is found to be broadly conducive to stability, the outcome of liberalization on exchange rate stability is less predictable than on banking sector stability.

Book The Middle Income Trap in Central and Eastern Europe

Download or read book The Middle Income Trap in Central and Eastern Europe written by Yaman Kouli and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1990s, the economic development of Central and Eastern Europe has maintained high economic growth rates, seemingly leading to an era of prosperity. This very positive vision of future economic success, linked to current political backlash and a long history of economic adversity, is a thin veil of the economic “way west” for so-called transition countries. The Middle-Income Trap in Central and Eastern Europe examines the reality of the diminishing marginal utility of further international investments alongside the pitfalls of higher government spending to cultivate innovation which ultimately makes foreign capital less attractive. In this volume authors from diverse disciplinary perspectives reflect on current debates surrounding the developmental bottlenecks in East-Central Europe. Their common goal is to analyze the manner of socio-economic transformation, question of the relevance and impact of the “middle-income trap” and identify possible ways to escape it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book A Disequilibrium Model of Real and Financial Accumulation in an Open Economy

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fourth version of a model that five years ago we set out to build and estimate along the lines of the continuous time approach clarified In chapter 1. Previous versions appeared in journal articles and conference proceedings, where the space is notoriously limited. Therefore we welcome the possibility of publishing a book-length treatment of this fourth version, so that we can describe its theoretical and empirical aspects in some detail. Although we have worked closely together and accept joint responsibility for the whole book, chs. 1 and 2 and appendix I have been written by G. Gandolfo, whilst chs. ] and 4 and appendix II have been written by P.c. Padoan. Different parts of this version of the model have been discussed In various lectures at the European University Institute (Florence) in 1984, In a seminar organized by the Bank of Italy (Sadiba, Perugia, Italy, February 16-18, 1984), in the second Viennese Workshop on Economic Applications of Control Theory (Vienna, May 16-18, 1984), and in the sixth annual Conference of the Society for Economic Dynamics and Control (Nice, France, June 13-15, 1984). In all of these we received helpful comments; similarly helpful were the comments of Clifford R .. Wymer, who, however, is absolved of any responsibility.
