Book Shock Initiation of Bare and Covered Explosives by Projectile Impact

Download or read book Shock Initiation of Bare and Covered Explosives by Projectile Impact written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shock initiation thresholds of bare and covered PBX-9404 and an HMX/TATB explosive called RX-26-AF were measured. The shocks were produced by the impact of flat-nosed and round-nosed steel projectiles in the velocity range of 0.5 to 2.2 km/s. Three types of coverings were used, 2 or 6 mm of tantalum, and a composite of aluminum and plastic. An Eulerian code containing material-strength and explosive-initiation models was used to evaluate our ability to calculate the shock initiation thresholds. These code calculations agreed well with the flat-nosed experimental data, but not so well with the round-nosed data.

Book Shock Waves in Condensed Matter 1983

Download or read book Shock Waves in Condensed Matter 1983 written by J.R. Asay and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shock Waves in Condensed Matter – 1983 covers the proceedings of the American Physical Society Topical Conference, held in Santa Fe, New Mexico on July 18-21, 1983. The book focuses on the response of matter to dynamic high pressure and temperature. The selection first elaborates on the review of theoretical calculations of phase transitions and comparisons with experimental results; theoretical and experimental studies of shock-compressed benzene and polybutene; and theory of the iron equation of state and melting curve to very high pressures. The text then ponders on nonhydrostatic effects in stress-wave induced phase transformation of calcite; Bauschinger effect model suitable for use in large computer codes; and strain rate sensitivity prediction for porous bed compaction. The manuscript takes a look at flaw nucleation and energetics of dynamic fragmentation, shock loading behavior of fused quartz, and aluminum damage simulation in high-velocity impact. Shock wave diagnostics by time-resolved infrared radiometry and non-linear Raman spectroscopy; Raman scattering temperature measurement behind a shock wave; and experiments and simulation on laser-driven shock wave evolution in aluminum targets are also discussed. The selection is a dependable reference for scientists and readers interested in the response of matter when exposed to dynamic high pressure and temperature.

Download or read book Shock Compression of Condensed Matter 1991 written by S.C. Schmidt and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-07-29 with total page 1103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers collected together in this volume constitute a review of recent research on the response of condensed matter to dynamic high pressures and temperatures. Inlcuded are sections on equations of state, phase transitions, material properties, explosive behavior, measurement techniques, and optical and laser studies. Recent developments in this area such as studies of impact and penetration phenomenology, the development of materials, especially ceramics and molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations are also covered. These latest advances, in addition to the many other results and topics covered by the authors, serve to make this volume the most authoritative source for the shock wave physics community.

Book A Numerical Study of Shock Initiation of Composition B by High Speed Impact of Small Steel Projectiles

Download or read book A Numerical Study of Shock Initiation of Composition B by High Speed Impact of Small Steel Projectiles written by Y. K. Huang and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the SIN and 2DE computer codes, we have conducted a numerical study of the shock initiation response of both bare and covered composition-B charges to projectile impact. In the bare charge case we observed two modes of shock initiation. Independence of the explosive response with respect to projectile aspect ratio was verified and critical conditions were determined as a function of projectile diameter with unit aspect ratio. The critical velocity was observed to have a linear dependence on the reciprocal of the square root of the diameter with values a little below experimental data. Additional linear relations to completely describe buildup to detonation were generated from the results. We found that development of detonation is similar in the case of covered charges. When the critical velocity was corrected for cover plate thickness, good agreement between the results for bare and covered charges was observed.

Book Chemistry and Physics of Energetic Materials

Download or read book Chemistry and Physics of Energetic Materials written by S.N. Bulusu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents a collection of lectures presented at the NATO Advanced study Institute(ASI) on "Chemistry & Physics of the Molecular Processes in Energetic Materials", held at Hotel Torre Normanna, Altavilla Milicia, Sicily, Italy, September 3 to 15, 1989. The institute was attended by seventy participants including twenty lecturers, drawn from thirteen countries. The purpose of the institute was to review the major ad vances made in recent years in the theoretical and experi mental aspects of explosives and propellants. In accordance with the format of the NATO ASI, it was arranged to have a relatively small number of speakers to present in depth, re view type lectures emphasizing the basic research aspects of the subject, over a two week period. Most of the speakers gave two lectures, each in excess of one hour with addition al time for discussions. The scope of the meeting was limit ed to molecular and spectroscopic studies since the hydro dynamic aspects of detonation and various performance crite ria of energetic materials are often covered adequately in other international meetings. An attempt was made to have a coherent presentation of various theoretical, computational and spectroscopic approaches to help a better understanding of energetic materials from a molecular point of view. The progress already made in these areas is such that structure property (e. g.

Book Shock Initiation Study of PBX 9404

Download or read book Shock Initiation Study of PBX 9404 written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pressure-field histories during the sustained and short-duration shock initiation of PBX-9404 explosive (plastic-bonded HMX) have been determined with embedded Manganin gauges. Numerical integration of the conservation relations and an assumed equation of state are used to obtain the decomposition histories during the initiation process. In both cases, this process is effected by reaction originating near the impact face producing pressure pulses that overtake the shock front and enhance its strength, leading to an abrupt transition to detonation. Correlation of reaction rates to state variables suggest an Arrhenius rate form, modified to include a dependence on shock strength and an induction time. This rate is used in computer simulations of several other initiation experiments on PBX-9404.

Book Short pulse Shock Initiation of Granular Explosives PBX 9404

Download or read book Short pulse Shock Initiation of Granular Explosives PBX 9404 written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation has examined how different rates of unloading affect the release of chemical energy in a granular explosive experiencing transient shock compression. A compressed-gas gun was used to generate two types of short-pulse shocks in the explosive PBX-9404. A shock pressure of 3.2 GPa sustained for 0.37 .mu.s was produced in both cases, but differences in flyer-plate properties resulted in different unloading histories. In one case the impact interface was rapidly unloaded by the initial release wave, while in the second case the unloading required multiple release waves over several microseconds. A VISAR system was used to observe the evolution of these two waves for distances up to 10 mm. The recorded waveforms showed that the unloading rates had a dominant effect on chemical energy release and growth towards detonation. This effect is important for considerations of critical impact criteria, and should provide a strong test for predictive shock-initiation models.
