In 1595, the Spanish galleon Santa Madero sank off the coast of Saint Croix, taking its crew and a treasure worth millions to the ocean floor, but attempts to recover the treasure over many centuries have all met mysterious and tragic ends. Giving little credence to the story of the curse surrounding the treasure, Ross enlists his best friend and partner, Lou Velez, to recover the sunken fortune. Far below the tranquil blue sea, both men engage in a horrifying confrontation that leaves Velez on the verge of death. As his friend battles for his life, Ross studies the few artifacts they had managed to recover: a handful of doubloons and a coral-encrusted idol. But what is this idol, and what secret does it hold? As Ross diggers deeper into the origin of the idol, an enigmatic and beautiful woman enters his world, speaking of more danger and another treasure worth millions. As the idol yields its secret—an ancient amulet which has to power to control time—Ross and his new partner set sail for a new sunken treasure as two mysterious and brutal agents relentlessly pursue them.

Book excerpt: Crazy is the tales of my adventure in the bush. I left Montreal in 1972, at the ripe old age of 26 to live a different life than the one I was brought up in. I had decided that there was nothing civilized about civilization and I wanted to try something completely different. I found it in the north central part of the Cariboo region of BC near Quesnel. Everybody back home was talking about going back to the land but they never did anything about it. In '72 I got tired of their BS and decided to just do it. My brother and I left Montreal in an old GMC 1 ton van and drove across Canada. Along the way we worked on a cattle ranch near Eckville Alberta for two months. We arrived in the Quesnel area, on the Barkerville highway at Cottonwood. As we drove into an old school friend's driveway, I had the distinct feeling that I had come home. So began the adventure of a lifetime.

Both women face their own ordeals as they attempt to succeed in a hostile society – Mary being a strong-willed woman in the recording industry, and Lilly in a series of social and political endeavors.Marc's story is an ironic, irreverent, and critical look at the past and its effect on the present.More at http://www.dtdesertrat.wordpress.com

The combat is horrific, as soldiers die in the smoking cellars and trenches of a ruined city. Through this twisted carnage stalk two men—one Russian, one German—each the top sniper in his respective army. These two marksmen are equally matched in both skill and tenacity. Each man has his own mission: to find his counterpart—and kill him. But an American woman trapped in Russia complicates this extraordinary duel. Book 40 Thieves on Saipan

  • Author : Joseph Tachovsky
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2020-06-02
  • ISBN : 1684510678
  • Pages : 323 pages

Download or read book 40 Thieves on Saipan written by Joseph Tachovsky and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-06-02 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of The 2020 Best Book Award for Military History -- American Bookfest An elite platoon of Marine Scout-Snipers, Lieutenant Frank Tachovsky’s “40 Thieves” were chosen for their willingness to defy rules and beat all-comers. When two Marines got into a fight, the loser ended up in the infirmary, the winner in the brig. Tachovsky wanted the winner on his team—a brush with military law was a recommendation. These full-blooded men were trained in a ruthless array of hand-to-hand killing techniques and then thrown into the battle for Saipan—Emperor Hirohito’s “Treasure” and the bulwark of the Japanese Empire in the Pacific—where they would wreak havoc in and around, but mostly behind, enemy lines. They witnessed inhuman atrocities; walked into an ambush after the cunning Japanese used wounded Marines as bait; endured body-punishing extremes of heat, hunger, and thirst; fought a relentless enemy who would not surrender; and watched best friends die. Now Tachovsky’s son Joseph tells their remarkable story—a story he didn’t even know until after his father’s death—reported from an extensive documentary record, including priceless mementos his father kept, and from exhaustive interviews with survivors who served under Lieutenant “Ski.” This is how America won the war in the Pacific, where “uncommon valor was a common virtue.” 40 Thieves on Saipan: The Elite Marine Scout-Snipers in One of World War II’s Bloodiest Battles is true history. It’s also an adventure you don’t want to miss.

Book Dormont

Download or read book Dormont written by Raymond W. Smith and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-09 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dormont Borough, incorporated in 1909, had slightly less than 10,000 citizens when I lived there in the 1950's. It had no streets, only avenues, and many of them named after the states of the union-like a Monopoly board. Its two connected business districts on Potomac and West Liberty Avenues provided tidy commercial areas that filled the needs of its citizens. I once counted 14 bars. And most prominent of all, Dormont's 26-acre park stood at the heart of the borough. It had a huge swimming pool, a number of athletic fields and many alcoves to hide in. Picnics, sports events, dances, sled riding, proms at the bathhouse, fireworks on Memorial Day (which we typically called Dormont Day) gave its citizens an extraordinarily encapsulated experience. From our point of view, Dormont Park, and, in fact, Dormont itself, was complete.

Book Colloquial Language in Ulysses

Download or read book Colloquial Language in Ulysses written by Robert William Dent and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For more than half a century, the extraordinary range of vocabularies and styles in Joyce's Ulysses has been an object of critical and scholarly attention. For the better part of a decade, R. W. Dent has been gathering documentation on a single aspect of this work, what may loosely be called the "colloquial language." The result of this research, Colloquial Language in Ulysses, as its subtitle implies, is essentially a reference tool. It uses "colloquial" in the ordinary sense, "characteristic of or appropriate to the spoken language or to writing that seeks the effect of speech; informal." Taking heart in the fact that the Oxford English Dictionary and Eric Partridge's Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English frequently disagree on the matter, Dent includes as colloquial a great deal that purists might question or disallow." "For the most part, this work provides raw, useful data for Ulysses critics and scholars, but it rarely attempts to perform the work of literary critics. It will make users aware both of new information and of information already available in such reference works as the recently revised OED, for many users not readily accessible. Like the OED itself it is necessarily a work-in-progress, especially in its efforts to provide pre-Ulysses evidence, but it is abundantly useful in its present state." "Most entries supplement - and many correct - entries in its principal predecessor, Don Gifford's Ulysses Annotated. Colloquial Language in Ulysses attempts to include all colloquial expressions on which Gifford is seriously inadequate, questionable, or demonstrably mistaken, and all on which the 1988 edition differs substantially from the earlier edition of 1974."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
