Book excerpt: Mentioned in BBC News: http: //www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-24281727 Benjamin Leigh Smith discovered and named dozens of islands in the Arctic but published no account of his pioneering explorations. He refused public accolades and sent stand-ins to deliver the results of his work to scientific societies. Yet, the Royal Geographic Society's Sir Clements R. Markham referred to him as a polar explorer of the first rank. Traveling to the Arctic islands that Leigh Smith explored and crisscrossing England to uncover unpublished journals, diaries, and photographs, archaeologist and writer P. J. Adventures start before they even board the Good Hope, with Billy's comical introduction to the villainous Chuck Thurler. The crew members quickly become friends as the teens learn about the Good Hope's mission to serve isolated people along the British Columbia coastline. At first, Billy's main worry is surviving strict Miss Skairdale's 9th grade math class next fall. April agrees to help him review 8th grade math if he'll take bird photos for her final school project of the year. Then drug dealer Chuck Thurler turns up with a construction crew sent to work on the light station. The teens have no idea they'll soon be embroiled in a murderous plot that includes sinking the light station boat (with Mike aboard). That's followed by an exciting helicopter flight to find and save the Good Hope from destruction. Throughout the worry and danger, Billy and April both learn more about trusting God for help in all of life. The Adventure Quest stories are set in the 1980s, before today's technology became part of everyday life. One reason for republishing them now is to remind young people of the satisfaction of depending on their own imaginations and ingenuity. As readers adventure along with Billy and Jodi, they will experience the special world that is the Pacific Northwest, with all its beauty and variety. As the young people grow in their faith, readers will also learn how to apply God's word to their own lives.

Book Shipwreck Narratives Out of our Depth

Download or read book Shipwreck Narratives Out of our Depth written by Michael Titlestad and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shipwreck Narratives: Out of Our Depth studies both the representation of shipwreck and the ways in which shipwrecks are used in creative, philosophical, and political works. The first part of the book examines historical shipwreck narratives published over a period of two centuries and their legacies. Michael Titlestad points to a range of narrative conventions, literary tropes and questions concerning representation and its limits in narratives about these historic shipwrecks. The second part engages novels, poems, films, artwork, and musical composition that grapple with shipwreck. Collectively the chapters suggest the spectacular productivity of shipwreck narrative; the multiple ways in which its concerns and logic have inspired anxious creativity in the last century. Titlestad recognizes in weaving in his personal experience that shipwreck—the destruction of form and the advent of disorder—could be seen not only as a corollary for his own neurological disorder, but also an abiding principle in tropology. This book describes how shipwreck has figured in texts (from historical narratives to fiction, film and music) as an analogue for emotional, psychological, and physical fragmentation.

Book Shipwreck Survivor Search

Download or read book Shipwreck Survivor Search written by AQEEL AHMED and published by AQEEL AHMED. This book was released on 2024-02-19 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deep in the huge, beautiful ocean, there is a beautiful story of kindness and bravery. Barbie, who is kind and brave, is in charge of the Rescue Radiance, a machine made of steel, technology, and hope. She does this with resolve and hope. Her job is easy but important: to search the vast oceans for survivors of shipwrecks and help them when they need it the most. This story is broken up into twelve interesting parts. Each one shows how strong the human spirit is and how much love we can have for others. As Barbie and her hardworking team try to get through the dangerous waters, they face a number of problems that test their resolve. Each chapter brings something new and more interesting than the last. The themes range from huge storms raging with wild fury to mysterious islands full of secrets waiting to be solved. Even with all of these problems, Barbie's goal is still the same: to bring hope to people who are feeling hopeless and lost in the night. Barbie and her team are a symbol of bravery, kindness, and a strong desire to help others on their journey. They show that one act of kindness can make a big difference in people's lives and change their fate, even when things look hopeless. They not only save people from the depths of the ocean, but they also make them feel welcome in a society that values relationships and second chances. This Rescue Radiance epic is more than just a bunch of rescue missions; it's a story that weaves together the lives of everyone it meets, teaching lessons about being brave, working together, and how important it is to see things beyond yourself. There is no sea too big for Barbie and her crew to cross when their hearts are led by empathy and kindness. Lastly, Barbie's trip across the ocean is a symbol of hope because it shows how strong relationships can be and how determined people can be to make the world a better place. The book is full of this timeless message: that we can get through even the worst storms together if we have faith in each other and our bonds. Chapter 1: The job is given. Barbie was taking the Rescue Radiance, a huge, shiny warship. She searched the seas for anyone who might need help. Barbie was told to find people who were stuck in the ocean and save them. Her work put in a lot of effort to make this happen. She had a group of smart and brave sailors with her. They had an amazing collection of tools and gadgets that helped them find anyone who needed help. Picture yourself floating out on the huge, blue ocean, where the water goes on forever in every direction. You might feel like you're looking for a needle in a haystack when you try to find someone in such a big place. Barbie, on the other hand, was ready for the test. She was ready to do anything to find people who needed her help because she knew they were out there. Barbie and her friends looked like superheroes from the water. Like how superheroes use special gear to save the day, Barbie's boat was filled with the latest technology. They had strong lights that could shine even when it was very dark, radars that could find ships from far away, and even special gear that let them dive deep into the ocean when they had to. Barbie really wanted to do things. The word "determined" meant that she was very focused and ready to put in a lot of work. Every person she saved would make a big difference in the world, she thought. She got dressed as a captain every morning and went through all of her tools and plans to get ready for the day. She knew that someone might be waiting for them in the hopes that they would be found. Barbie was brave, even though the ocean was very big. She really cared about other people and wanted to help them. She thought that with her group and all of their specialized tools, they could do great things. They can find people who are lost and bring them back to their families. She was very happy about this. She knew that helping other people was one of the best things she could do. So, Barbie and her team set sail every day on the Rescue Radiance, keeping an eye on the horizon for any signs or calls for help. When they worked together, they all wanted to save lives and make the water safer for everyone. Even though it was hard work, Barbie was always excited to start the day and see who they could help next. Chapter 2: The First Savings As the sun rose over the horizon and beautiful colors filled the sky, a big event took place on Barbie's ship, the Rescue Radiance. A loud beep came from the radar, a high-tech device used to find things in the ocean. This buzzer meant that Barbie and her team had a tough task ahead of them. High waves caused a small boat to flip over in the middle of the ocean while everyone was sleeping. The people on the boat were very scared by this. There was no time for Barbie to waste. She knew that she had to help with something. She quickly got her brave group ready to go find the small boat. There were big waves breaking in the sea. Their trip was hard, but Barbie and her friends were more motivated. They were determined to help no matter what. Before they could see the small boat, they had to face the rough water. It was upside down, and a family was holding on to it. Even though they looked scared, they stayed together. Once Barbie saw kids, she felt like she had to bring them to safety right away. Barbie and her staff worked in a very organized way. They used their skills to get close to the upturned boat without making the family more scared. They told them in a soft voice that everything would be fine and that they were safe now. One by one, they helped the family get on their huge, strong ship. The family was safe from the dangerous water, even though they were still wet and cold. After getting on the Rescue Radiance, Barbie and her friends warmed up with hot drinks and soft blankets. There was a special place on the ship where the saved people could rest and feel safe. The family felt better as they sat there in the warmth, even though they were very worried. Barbie and her friends helped them out, and they were very thankful. Barbie's group was nice to the family and thought about them. The people made sure the family knew they could get help and were not alone. The family was glad everyone was safe and praised Barbie and her team for being so brave. She and her team had a lot more saves to make, but the first one was just as important. They knew that their ship was a lighthouse of hope for other people in trouble on the big, scary ocean. Barbie was very happy with the job that her team had done. By saving the family that morning, she was reminded to help people in need and make a difference, which was the main reason she went out to sea in the first place. What she and her team did was save one person at a time. Chapter 3: Issues That Rise and Fall One day, Barbie and her friends were out at sea with the Rescue Radiance when they saw thick clouds forming far away. It looked like a huge, scary storm was heading their way. Storms can be dangerous because they can bring strong winds and big waves that can knock boats over. Barbie, on the other hand, knew something very important: there might be people out at sea who needed help and were badly hurt by the storm. Barbie had to make a tough choice. She knew that joining the storm would put her and her friends in danger. But she thought about the people who might be out there alone and scared in the storm. She decided that they should do everything they could to help. Even when things are bad, heroes help other people. Barbie then led the ship right into the storm. The wind howled like a lion, and the huge waves in front of the Rescue Radiance looked like water mountains. It was a tough fight with the weather. As the ship rocked back and forth, it rained like buckets of water were being thrown from the sky. Still, Barbie and her friends didn't give up and kept going. They were brave to help people in need even though it was storming outside. Even though the weather was crazy, with thunderclaps and lightning flashes, they saw something. A fisherman's small boat was tossed around by the huge waves. The storm had trapped the fisherman and stopped him from moving his boat forward or backward. He held on to his boat and prayed for help from God. She then came over with her group. The fishermen must have felt like they were seeing a rainbow after a storm when they saw the Rescue Radiance. They were able to reach the fishers even though there were big waves and strong winds. They threw him a wide rope and pulled him on board their ship, away from the dangerous sea. The fisherman was scared, cold, and wet, but he was safe now. He was shocked that he had made it through such a terrible storm. Barbie and her friends gave him warm clothes and a hot drink. They heard about how he got lost in the storm and told him he wasn't alone to make him feel better.

Book excerpt: A mesmerizing novel of deception and betrayal from the acclaimed author of Wartime Lies and About Schmidt. John North, a prize-winning American writer, is suddenly beset by dark suspicions about the real value of his work. Over endless hours and bottles of whiskey consumed in a mysterious café called L’Entre Deux Mondes, he recounts, in counterpoint to his doubts, the one story he has never told before, perhaps the only important one he will ever tell. North’s chosen interlocutor–who could be his doppelgänger–is transfixed by the revelations and becomes the narrator of North’s tale. North has always been faithful to his wife, Lydia, but when one of his novels achieves a special success, he allows himself a dalliance with Léa, a starstruck young journalist. Coolly planning to make sure that his life with Lydia will not be disturbed, North is taken off guard when Léa becomes obsessed with him and he with her elaborate erotic games. As the hypnotic and serpentine confession unfurls, we gradually discover the extraordinary lengths to which North has gone to indulge a powerful desire for self-destruction. Shipwreck is a daring parable of the contradictory impulses that can rend a single soul–narcissism and self-loathing, refinement and lust.

There are as many shipwreck stories as there are thousands of Florida shipwrecks. This book offers thirty of the most interesting of them--from the tale of young Fontaneda, who wrecked in 1545 and was held captive by Indians for 17 years, to the story of the Coast Guard cutter Bibb, which was sunk off Key Largo in 1987 to provide an artificial reef and diving site. In between there is the Atocha, flagship of a Spanish treasure fleet, which sank in a hurricane in September 1622 and was found, along with its $100 million worth of gold and silver, by Mel Fisher in July of 1985. Each shipwreck story has a map pinpointing its location and a full-color illustration by renowned artist William L. Trotter. Book excerpt: Shipwrecks have captured our imagination for centuries. Here acclaimed historian Sam Willis traces the astonishing tales of ships that have met with disastrous ends, along with the ensuing acts of courage, moments of sacrifice and episodes of villainy that inevitably occurred in the extreme conditions. Many were freak accidents, and their circumstances so extraordinary that they inspired literature: the ramming of the Essex by a sperm whale was immortalized in Herman Melville's Moby Dick. Some symbolize colossal human tragedy: including the legendary Titanic whose maiden voyage famously went from pleasure cruise to epic catastrophe. From the Kyrenia ship of 300 BC to the Mary Rose, through to the Kursk submarine tragedy of 2000, this is a thrilling work of narrative history from one of our most talented young historians.
