Book A History of the Port Phillip District

Download or read book A History of the Port Phillip District written by A. G. L. Shaw and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This account of European settlement in the modern state of Victoria, Australia, spans developments from the first convict camp established in 1803 on the Bass Strait to the contemporary separation of the district from New South Wales. Aborigines, whalers, adventurers, squatters, speculators, and immigrants figure into this history of Victoria before the gold rush. The stories of such key leaders as John Baton and John Pascoe Fawkner offer insight into the founding of Melbourne, the economic depression and recovery of the 19th century, and the social progress of the 20th century. Details are drawn from primary sources including correspondence between officials in Melbourne, Sydney, and London and newspapers from Batman, Swanston, the Port Phillip Association, and La Trobe.

Download or read book Convicted written by Peter Bradley and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-08-13 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique history of Australia retold through the extraordinary lives of Peter Bradley’s three ancestors: a father, son and grandson. James Bradley was a First Fleet convict found guilty of stealing a white linen handkerchief worth two shillings, and sentenced to seven years transportation to Australia. Joseph Bradley worked his life in the most dangerous occupation of the time – whaling – and despite his parents being uneducated and illiterate went on to write a journal about his experiences, rich in history and insight. Roland Bradley was a man of unionism and politics, and like his father and grandfather took up the fight against the rich and powerful through his involvement with the early Maritime union. In 1894, he wrote an account of surviving the shipwreck of the SS Kanahooka, which forced its inhabitants to wander the wilderness of North Queensland for 18 days. Following the early struggles of a fledgling colony to nationhood, Convicted is an engrossing and highly imaginative retelling of the story of one family, entwined with the history of this country from the landing of the First Fleet in 1788.

Book Pacific Pidgins and Creoles

Download or read book Pacific Pidgins and Creoles written by Darrell T. Tryon and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-05-12 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pacific Pidgins and Creoles discusses the complex and fascinating history of English-based pidgins in the Pacific, especially the three closely related Melanesian pidgins: Tok Pisin, Pijin, and Bislama. The book details the central role of the port of Sydney and the linguistic synergies between Australia and the Pacific islands in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the role of Pacific islander plantation labor overseas, and the differentiation which has taken place in the pidgins spoken in the Melanesian island states in the 20th century. It also looks at the future of Pacific pidgins at a time of increasing vernacular language endangerment.

Book Material Culture and Consumer Society

Download or read book Material Culture and Consumer Society written by Mark Staniforth and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The establishment of a consumer society in Australia has not been a particularly well explored area of academic inquiry. My interests lie in the concepts and meanings that underlie the material world; ideas like, in the words of Madonna, "I am a material girl and I live in a material world" (terminology taken to be not gender specific), the classic graffiti paraphrasing of Descartes: I shop therefore I am or perhaps simply in the "world of goods" in the more academically respectable terms of Douglas and Isherwood (1979). This book arises out of my longstanding interest in the early colonial period in Australia. In part it represents an extension of the purely "historical" research conducted for my Master's thesis in the Department of History at the University of Sydney which explored aspects of the diet, health and lived experience of con victs and immigrants during their voyages to the Australian colonies within the timeframe 1837 to 1839 (Staniforth, 1993a). More importantly, it is the culmina tion of more than twenty-five years involvement in the excavation of shipwreck sites in Australia starting with James Matthews (1841) in 1974, through the test excavation of William Salthouse in 1982, continuing with my involvement between 1985 and 1994 in the excavation of Sydney Cove (1797) and most recently with shore-based whaling stations and whaling shipwreck sites. In this respect, this book may be seen as an example of what Ian Hodder (1986, p.

Book Forming a Colonial Economy

Download or read book Forming a Colonial Economy written by Noel George Butlin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This broad-ranging 1995 book provides a comprehensive account of the development of Australia's colonial economy before the gold rushes. Noel Butlin's analysis of the developing economy includes background discussion of eighteenth-century British social, economic, and military history and a detailed demographic analysis of the Australian population over a period of sixty years. He goes on to explore the role of private investment in the economy and the way in which dependence on the British public purse was replaced by dependence on private British capital inflow. A key focus of the book is the extent to which the Australian economy was independent or externally driven, that is, the level of synergism between Australia and Britain. Within this framework, Noel Butlin discusses the central issues of human capital and funding and their impact on the formation of the Australian economy. Forming a Colonial Economy does for the period to the 1840s what Noel Butlin's previous landmark economic histories have done for Australia from the 1860s to the 1890s. It is an ambitious and imaginative book that marks the culmination of a life's work.
