Book Extremes in the Archipelago

Download or read book Extremes in the Archipelago written by L.J. Touwen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-08-04 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late colonial period (1870-1942), the Outer Islands of Indonesia formed a dynamic area. The economic development of these islands outside Java is analysed in this book by focusing on the enormous increase in trade after 1900. The Outer Islands are described individually and as a group, paying special attention to regional differences. The core of the study is to examine the effects of trade—foreign and domestic—on economic development. Although the economic policy of the colonial government played a role in the gradual formation of a national economy, it did little to advance the relatively backward regions of the Outer Islands. As one of the largest and most tumultuous economies in Southeast Asia, Indonesia nowadays attracts a lot of international attention. This book will serve the study of the diverse and dynamic economic history of late colonial Indonesia, which profoundly influenced post-war events and the formation of a national state.

Book Historical Dictionary of Indonesia

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Indonesia written by Audrey Kahin and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-10-29 with total page 725 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wide-flung archipelago lying between the Pacific and Indian Oceans, Indonesia is the world's most populous Islamic country. For over two thousand years it was a crossroads on the major trading route between China and India, but it was not brought together into a single entity until the Dutch extended their rule throughout the Netherlands East Indies in the early part of the 20th century. Declaring its independence from the Dutch in 1945, the Republic of Indonesia was ruled by only two regimes over the next half century Throughout the years the country has continued to be dogged by an inefficient bureaucracy and by perpetual problems of corruption. However, since 2004 Indonesia has successfully carried out four direct elections for president, together with an equal number of elections for legislative bodies at all levels of government, and has finally in 2014 elected a president with no ties to either the military or to the previous authoritarian power structure. This third edition of Historical Dictionary of Indonesia contains a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 900 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Indonesia.

Book For Profit and Prosperity

Download or read book For Profit and Prosperity written by Wim Ravesteijn and published by Brill. This book was released on 2008 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roads, railway lines and bridges, harbours and cities, irrigation and drinking water supplies: evidence of the presence of Dutch engineers in the former Dutch East Indies may be found everywhere in Indonesia. For Profit and Prosperity places this legacy from the colonial past in its true perspective. This publication provides a detailed description of some of the most important civil public works projects of the Dutch East Indian era while simultaneously outlining the contribution made by the Netherlands to the restoration, modernisation and development of such works in the Republic of Indonesia. The public works once constructed by Dutch engineers have greatly influenced the way in which Indonesia has become what it is today. For Profit and Prosperity reveals just how all of that happened and it does not merely confine itself to the technological aspect. The relevant social, economic and cultural developments are also subjected to careful scrutiny. This book therefore describes in a unique way just how technology and society can influence each other. For Profit and Prosperity does not so much set out to provide a comprehensive catalogue-style overview of all the public works structures created in the archipelago but rather to provide an insight into the way in which civil engineering evolved in the former colony. At the same time an impression is inevitably given of the effect which all of that had upon Dutch civil engineering in general.

Book Elusive Pirates Pervasive Smugglers

Download or read book Elusive Pirates Pervasive Smugglers written by Robert J. Antony and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Piracy and smuggling are as great a problem today as they were several hundreds of years ago. The studies in Elusive Pirates, Pervasive Smugglers, for the first time, carefully describe and critically analyze piracy and smuggling in the Greater China Seas region from the sixteenth century to the present. Because piracy and smuggling involve complex historical processes that are still evolving, to fully understand contemporary problems it is important to place them in larger historical and comparative perspectives. The essays in this book add significantly to the scholarship on East and Southeast Asian history, and in particular to the maritime history of the region we call the Greater China Seas. This is the first book to analyze the whole region from Japan to Southeast Asia as a single, integrated historical and geographical area. This book takes a radical departure from the standard terracentered histories to place the seas at the center rather than at the margins of our inquiries. By focusing on the water we are better able to stitch together the diverse histories of Japan, China, and Southeast Asia. The contributors to this anthology show that, although often dismissed as historically unimportant, pirates and smugglers have in fact played significant roles in the development of the modern world. Elusive Pirates, Pervasive Smugglers should appeal to undergraduate and graduate students in history and Asian studies, as well as to general readers interested in pirates and maritime history.

Book Shallow Waters Rising Tide

Download or read book Shallow Waters Rising Tide written by G. J. Knaap and published by Brill. This book was released on 1996 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the historiography of Southeast Asia of the early modern period maritime trade has always been an important topic. A good opportunity for learning more about early modern shipping and trade is by making use of the few surviving harbourmasters' registrations of private traffic in fifteen major ports in Java around the year 1775. In this book these records, registering more than 20,000 ship movements, are analysed and interpreted in their broader context. The traffic in the shallow waters along the coast of Java appears to have experienced a rising tide of Dutch presence.

Book At Home on the World Markets

Download or read book At Home on the World Markets written by Joost Jonker and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2001-03-01 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dutch economy has relied on trade for centuries. During the seventeenth century the Netherlands experienced a Golden Age built largely on commercial enterprise, and trade continues to be the golden link in the supply chain from producers to consumers. Yet we know very little about the business of trade and the people involved in it. What was the nature of their work, and how did it evolve through the ages? In the lavishly illustrated At Home on the World Markets Joost Jonker and Keetie Sluyterman look at mercantile dynasties - such as the Trips and the Van Eeghens - and companies - such as the famous Dutch East Indian Company VOC and the modern trading company Hagemeyer - that have been largely unstudied. They describe the evolution of a unique economic sector that occupies a key position in the supply chain from producers to consumers.
