Book excerpt: Showing the complex interaction of strategy, logistics, administration, and economics, Syrett's pioneering text brings to light some basic causes for the ultimate failure of the British war effort during the American War of Independence. Book American Privateers of the Revolutionary War

Download or read book American Privateers of the Revolutionary War written by Angus Konstam and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the American War of Independence (1775–83), Congress issued almost 800 letters of marque, as a way of combating Britain's overwhelming naval and mercantile superiority. At first, it was only fishermen and the skippers of small merchant ships who turned to privateering, with mixed results. Eventually though, American shipyards began to turn out specially-converted ships, while later still, the first purpose-built privateers entered the fray. These American privateers seized more than 600 British merchant ships over the course of the war, capturing thousands of British seamen. Indeed, Jeremiah O'Brien's privateer Unity fought the first sea engagement of the Revolutionary War in the Battle of Machias of 1775, managing to capture a British armed schooner with just 40 men, their guns, axes and pitchforks, and the words 'Surrender to America'. By the end of the war, some of the largest American privateers could venture as far as the British Isles, and were more powerful than most contemporary warships in the fledgling US Navy. A small number of Loyalist privateers also put to sea during the war, and preyed on the shipping of their rebel countrymen. Packed with fascinating insights into the age of privateers, this book traces the development of these remarkable ships, and explains how they made such a significant contribution to the American Revolutionary War.

Book Navies and the American Revolution 1775 1783

Download or read book Navies and the American Revolution 1775 1783 written by Robert Gardiner and published by US Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crucial contribution of seapower to the struggle for American independence forms the theme for this volume, drawing on published prints, maps and illustrated journals of the time to achieve a remarkable impression of the maritime aspects of the war, in all its variety and drama. But besides the campaigns, battles and sieges, the book also illustrates many significant background aspects of the war, in the form of thematic inserts on such subjects as the ship types, the weapons and the organisation involved. The result is not just a visually exciting collection of contemporary images, many previously unpublished, but a valuable contribution to the understanding of how the American Revolution was seen at the time.

Book Patriot Militiaman in the American Revolution 1775 82

Download or read book Patriot Militiaman in the American Revolution 1775 82 written by Ed Gilbert and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06-20 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Revolution was a decisive conflict, which saw the birth of a new nation. Continental Army regulars fought in massive and famous battles from New England to Virginia, but in the South a different kind of warfare was afoot. Local militia, sometimes stiffened by a small core of the Continental Line, played a pivotal role. This lesser-known war ultimately decided the fate of the Revolution by thwarting the British "Southern strategy". In this title, the authors provide a unique and personal focus on the history of their own ancestors, who fought for the South Carolina Militia, to show just how effective the irregular forces were in a complex war of raids, ambushes, and pitched battles. The book explores the tactics, equipment, leadership and performance of the opposing Patriot and Rebel forces, shining new light on the vicious struggle in the South.

This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The War for Independence and the Transformation of American Society focuses on a conflict which was both civil war and revolution and assesses how Americans met the challenges of adapting to the ideals of Independence and Republicanism. The war effected political reconstruction and brought economic self sufficiency and expansion, but it also brought oppression of dissenting and ethnic minorities, broadened the divide between the affluent and the poor and strengthened the institution of slavery. Focusing on the climate of war itself and its effects on the lives of those who lived through it, this book includes discussion of: *Recruitment and Society *The Home Front *Constraints on Liberty *Women and family during the war years *African Americans and Native Americans The War for Independence is a fascinating account of the wider dimension to the meaning of the American Revolution.

Book The French Army in the American War of Independence

Download or read book The French Army in the American War of Independence written by René Chartrand and published by Osprey Publishing. This book was released on 1992-03-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French forces that fought during the American War of Independence (1775-1783) were, to a large extent, a product of the disasters of the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). During that war the fleet had been swept off the oceans, and nearly all colonies had been lost. Sweeping reforms were demanded. From the end of 1762 a series of royal orders dictated by common sense and good planning were signed by the king, and a vast reorganisation was started, ensuring that the army that fought in the American War presented a very different, altogether more formidable threat to her foes.
