Download or read book Log Book written by Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen and published by Carcanet Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Sophia de Mello Breyner, long regarded as among Portugal's major poets, poetry is a way of seeing and receiving life.`Poetry,' she writes, `is an art of being. It does not require my time and labour. It does not ask me to have a science or an aesthetics or a theory. Instead it demands the entireness of my being, a consciousness running deeper than my intellect, a fidelity purer than any I can control.' Greece, as much as Portugal, informs the geography, mythology and vehement light of Breyner's work. Greece also informs her sense of the achieved lyric. Even in the poems which touch most closely on personal themes of love, loss and expectation, the language remains our common language, without affectation or coy eccentricity. Her pursuit of right words and a right world is one and the same.

Book excerpt: Naval deck logs require young officers to record mundane details of a ship's condition every few hours. According to a U.S. Navy tradition, the New Year's midwatch log--covering midnight to early morning of January 1--can be entered as poetry. Each chapter of this first book-length examination of midwatch poems presents verses written 1941-1946 aboard a ship engaged in combat during World War II, including celebrated warships like the USS Enterprise and nameless vessels like PC 1264. Historical overviews of the ships' operations, along with biographical sketches of the author(s), relate each poem to its moment in history.

Book excerpt: You may love photography or heritage scrap booking, remembering gentler, less complicated, romantic times. Or you may be a history buff. And, you may enjoy poetry and prose. If you do, you will certainly find a feast of history, poetry and family in these pages. This book celebrates the life of a man who was born a story teller and lived the life of a poet. His poetry and life were one. His family traveled at his side on this incredible journey. All of life's experiences became the stuff out of which his verses emerged and lived. I often traveled with him: I'm his oldest son Calvin, and co-author of this book.

Download or read book Climate Change Poetry written by Stefan Nicholson and published by Stefan Nicholson. This book was released on 2020-02-19 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents my summary on climate change and some poems written with that in mind. All I ask is for some time – about 15 minutes – unless you decide that your interest lies elsewhere. Time is precious and so is all life on Earth. The climate is always changing. How do we know? What have we learnt? We all bear witness to “the four seasons” varying in severity, depending on where you live and how you, your city and farming community have treated the environment. Nature is neither forgiving or forgetful. Just ask the Mesopotamians, Aztecs, Incas, Babylonians and now modern industrial humans – all have followed the same path to reducing their environment to dust by overpopulation, deforestation, wars and greed. Human civilisations all follow a familiar destructive pattern. We always seem to be at war with someone else – as if we enjoy taking what is not ours. Hopefully this book will raise awareness and persuade the reader to act now for future generations.
