Download or read book Double Hull Tanker Legislation written by Marine Board and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-02-23 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The passage of the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA 90) by Congress and subsequent modifications of international maritime regulations resulted in a far-reaching change in the design of tank vessels. Double-hull rather than single-hull tankers are now the industry standard, and nearly all ships in the world maritime oil transportation fleet are expected to have double hulls by about 2020. This book assesses the impact of the double hull and related provisions of OPA 90 on ship safety, protection of the marine environment, and the economic viability and operational makeup of the maritime oil transportation industry. The influence of international conventions on tank vessel design and operation is addressed. Owners and operators of domestic and international tank vessel fleets, shipyard operators, marine architects, classification societies, environmentalists, and state and federal regulators will find this book useful.

Download or read book Tree Biotechnology written by Kishan Gopal Ramawat and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest trees cover 30% of the earth's land surface, providing renewable fuel, wood, timber, shelter, fruits, leaves, bark, roots, and are source of medicinal products in addition to benefits such as carbon sequestration, water shed protection, and habitat for 1/3 of terrestrial species. However, the genetic analysis and breeding of trees has lagged behind that of crop plants. Therefore, systematic conservation, sustainable improvement and pragmatic utilization of trees are global priorities. This book provides comprehensive and up to date information about tree characterization, biological understanding, and improvement through biotechnological and molecular tools.

Download or read book Tanker Spills written by Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1991-02-01 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can we design an oil tanker that meets our complex demands for environmental protection, economical operation, and crew safety? This volume evaluates and ranks a wide variety of tank ship hull designs proposed by experts around the world. Based on extensive research and studies, the book explores the implications of our rising demand for petroleum and increase in tanker operations; U.S. government regulations and U.S. Coast Guard policies regarding designs for new tank vessel construction; how new ship design would affect crew safety, maintenance, inspection, and other technical issues; the prospects for retrofitting existing tankers to reduce the risk of oil spills; and more. The conclusions and recommendations will be particularly important to maritime safety regulators in the United States and abroad; naval architects; ship operators and engineers; and officials in the petroleum, shipping, and marine insurance industries.

Download or read book Structural Hot Spot Stress Approach to Fatigue Analysis of Welded Components written by Erkki Niemi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-28 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides background and guidance on the use of the structural hot-spot stress approach to fatigue analysis. The book also offers Design S-N curves for use with the structural hot-spot stress for a range of weld details, and presents parametric formulas for calculating stress increases due to misalignment and structural discontinuities. Highlighting the extension to structures fabricated from plates and non-tubular sections. The structural hot-spot stress approach focuses on cases of potential fatigue cracking from the weld toe and it has been in use for many years in tubular joints. Following an explanation of the structural hot-spot stress, its definition and its relevance to fatigue, the book describes methods for its determination. It considers stress determination from both finite element analysis and strain gauge measurements, and emphasizes the use of finite element stress analysis, providing guidance on the choice of element type and size for use with either solid or shell elements. Lastly, it illustrates the use of the recommendations in four case studies involving the fatigue assessment of welded structures using the structural hot-spot stress

Download or read book Prevention of Fracture in Ship Structure written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though fractures in ship structures have been researched for over 40 years the continue to be bulk carriers lost at sea with no trace and unexpected fatigue failure in deep draft tank ships. It has been found on many occasions that failures, while unexpected, could have been prevented had currently known information been used in the design, construction, maintenance, and inspection of the ship. The Ship Structure Committee recognized this situation and requested the Marine Board of the National Research Council to convene a workshop to document the methods and educate the industry. This report includes all elements of the Symposium and Workshop on the Prevention of Fracture in Ship Structures held in March, 1995. It invited background papers were presented covering History and Background, Defining the Problem, and Current Practices in Other Industries. Then a series of technical papers on the state-of-the-art in areas of Design, Fatigue and Fracture, Reliability, Inspection, Loads and Materials and Fabrication were given to have the workshop members enter discussions on a level playing field. The first section of this report are the findings of the workshops with the final recommendations to the industry. The papers presented in the symposium follow that.
Download or read book Design of Ship Hull Structures written by Yasuhisa Okumoto and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-03-25 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the four authors show us the condensed experience how to design ship hull structures from a practical viewpoint. In three parts, the book presents the fundamentals, the theory and the application of structural design of hulls. The topics are treated comprehensively with an emphasis on how to achieve reliable and efficient ship structures. The authors have in particular introduced their experiences with the rapid increase of ship sizes as well as the introduction of ship types with a high degree of specialization. The associated early failures of these "new" structures have been analyzed to provide the readers with illustrations why structural design needs to be carried out on several levels in order to ensure that correct loading is applied and that local structural behaviour in properly understood.
