Book Engineering Compendium on Radiation Shielding

Download or read book Engineering Compendium on Radiation Shielding written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need has arisen for a comprehensive handbook for engineers faced with problems of radiation shielding design. Although there are several excellent books on shielding, they either do not give enough consideration to the many practical design problems, or are limited to special aspects of the subject. Recognizing the universal need, the International Atomic Energy Agency decided to sponsor the publication ofthe present Engineering Compendium on Radiation Shield ing. At the first editorial discussions it was agreed that, if such a book were to be undertaken, it would be appropriate not only to create a useful design tool for the practising engineer but also to include well-referenced basic data for the research worker. Although trying to keep the book down to a reasonable size, the editors have aimed at a complete presentation of the subject, covering and linking both the tech nology and the science of shielding. Efforts to make terms and definitions consistent throughout have been only partially successful, owing to the continuing development of new ideas. However, inconsisten cies that could not be eliminated are identified whenever possible.

Book Analysis of Metallic Shielding for Reduction of RF Induced Heating of Electrode During MRI for Active Implants

Download or read book Analysis of Metallic Shielding for Reduction of RF Induced Heating of Electrode During MRI for Active Implants written by Krishna Singhal and published by Krishna Singhal. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The options available to patients with implantable devices are limited. It is because there are multiple interactions between the MRI environment and the implantable medical devices. The three main components of MRI systems- static magnet, RF coil, and a gradient coil- interact with the implantable medical devices. These interactions can cause force, torque, device vibrations and RF-induced heating. Among all these potential hazards is the heating caused by the RF electromagnetic field. The lead wires of the implants can act as antennas and pick up the electric field generated by the RF coil. This results in the induced current traveling along the length of the device that will dissipate as heat where it is coupled to tissue. The combination of critically sensitive tissues and high heat makes this interaction the most significant risk for patient safety. Hence, there arises a need to design effective techniques that can minimize RF heating induced during an MRI. The technique of shielding has been proven to reduce RF-induced heating. The focus of current research is to provide analysis of shielding technique for reduction of RF-induced heating of electrodes during MRI. Shielded leads have been developed as a method to reduce RF-heating responsible for temperature rise at the electrodes. The purpose of this work is to provide a quantitative understanding of how a conducting metallic shield over a lead will reduce RF heating at the electrode during MRI scans. A physical model and equations for reduction of RF heating by a shielded lead are presented. Temperature rises are calculated for different lengths of shielded and unshielded leads. Confirming measurements are made for a quarter-wavelength coaxial cable model of the lead. Measured temperature rise and transfer function depended on terminations conditions, with the shorted lead exhibiting the temperature rise sixteen times less than an open-ended lead. The information provided by this work is expected to facilitate the development of lead wires with reduced RF-induced heating. The availability of lead wires with reduced heating will allow expanded access to MRI by patients with implantable devices.

Book Stagnation point Shielding by Melting and Vaporization

Download or read book Stagnation point Shielding by Melting and Vaporization written by Leonard Roberts and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An approximate theoretical analysis is made of the shielding mechanism whereby the rate of heat transfer to the forward stagnation point of blunt bodies is reduced by melting and vaporization. General qualitative results are given and a numerical example, the melting and vaporization of ice, is presented and discussed in detail.

Book Physico chemistry of Elastomer Heat shielding Materials

Download or read book Physico chemistry of Elastomer Heat shielding Materials written by A. A. Donskoi and published by Nova Biomedical Books. This book was released on 1998 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in rocket and space technique required the creation of a new types of materials, heat-shielding ones, which prevent decomposition of construction materials by high-temperature flows. During the last 40 years a great number of heat-shielding materials (HSM) were created for different exploitation regimes: Rubbers, foamy materials, asbo-, glass- and carbonic plastics, fireproofs, etc. In the late 50's the creation of a HSM for the internal surface protection of solid propellant rocket engines from high-temperature gas flows of combustion products (up to 4000k) became necessary. HSM's were also created for launching rocket parts and appliances. In most cases, HSM's are for a single use, because coatings are destroyed by highly enthalpic heating. This book discusses the problems of the creation of these elastic heat-shielding materials, the main exploitational drawbacks of these coatings and the safety of such coatings.
