Book excerpt: Adam Klay hates everything about his hometown. The last thing the accomplished FBI agent wants is to abandon the case he's working on and return to his past, but the death of his father forces his hand. Micah Ryan has been living on auto-pilot since his family perished years ago. All he needs is coffee, the attention of his cranky cat, and enough clients to pay the bills. Spending his days at the local espresso bar wrapping up case paperwork is better than dealing with his dad's estate. Plus there's the shy, sexy man Adam can't keep his eyes off of. For Micah tripping and falling into a handsome stranger's lap, at his favorite coffee shop, is bad enough. But the instant attraction he feels for the other man is mortifying--right? As it turns out there is at least one thing Adam likes about Skagit. And when a series of sinister incidents leave Micah vulnerable to an unknown killer, Adam vows to protect him. But does the threat to Micah stem from Micah's past, or has Adam's investigation followed him to Skagit? Can Adam protect Micah without losing his heart? Is Micah ready for love? And will they get their chance to explore their attraction or will the killer get there first? Storm Season is a dual POV about a terminally grouchy Federal Agent who discovers his softer side and a sweet man who thought he had nothing to live for. The Shielded Hearts series follows a different couple in each book as they try to stop killers, unravel a human trafficking ring, and find a family of their own.

Book Uncovering Violence

    Book Details:
  • Author : Amy Cottrill
  • Publisher : Westminster John Knox Press
  • Release : 2021-10-26
  • ISBN : 1646982185
  • Pages : 188 pages

Download or read book Uncovering Violence written by Amy Cottrill and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2021-10-26 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is no surprise that the Bible is filled with stories of violence, having come into being through the crucible of trauma, cultural conflict, and warfare. But the more obvious acts of physical or sexual violence in the Hebrew Bible often overshadow its subtler forms throughout Scripture and belie the variety of perspectives on violence embedded in biblical narratives. This hinders readers' ability to recognize the full spectrum of human engagement with violence, both in texts and in their lived experiences. Uncovering Violence: Reading Biblical Narratives as an Ethical Project seeks to provide a theoretical vocabulary for the various forms that violence can take—including textual violence, interpretive violence, moral injury, and slow violence—and to offer a fresh ethical reading of violence in the biblical text. Focusing on four narratives from the Hebrew Bible, Cottrill uses the approach of narrative ethics to lay out the many ways that stories can make moral claims on readers, not by delivering a discrete "lesson" or takeaway but by making transformative contact with readers and involving them in a more embodied dialogue with the text. Exploring the narratives of Jael’s killing of Sisera, the toxic masculinity of Samson, environmental devastation and failures of legal systems in Ruth, and Abigail’s mediation with King David, Uncovering Violence presents strategies for reading that allow for this close encounter. In doing so, it helps prepare readers to better recognize, interpret, and even respond to violence and its many effects within and beyond the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In light of the numerous challenges posed by globalization, living together as humanity on one planet needs to be reinvented in the twenty-first century. To create a new, peaceful, just, and sustainable world order is vital to the survival of us all. In this regard, humankind will have to expand the limited scope of its moral imagination beyond the borders of family, tribe, class, religion, nation, and culture. Will the cultivation of compassion, as scholars like Martha Nussbaum and Karen Armstrong, and religious leaders like the Dalai Lama maintain, contribute to a more just world? A global movement to cultivate and extend compassion beyond the immediate circle of concern may indeed find inspiration from many different religious traditions. The question at the heart of this book is whether the Christian legacy provides us with sources of moral imagination needed to guide us into the global era. Can the Christian practice of faith contribute to a more compassionate world? If so, how? And is it true that compassion is what we need, or do we need something else (justice, for example)? In Considering Compassion, colleagues from different theological disciplines at Stellenbosch, South Africa, and Groningen, Netherlands, take up these challenging questions from a variety of interdisciplinary angles.
