Book SHF SATCOM Microstrip Phased Array Antenna

Download or read book SHF SATCOM Microstrip Phased Array Antenna written by Brian C. Considine and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern airborne and ground satellite communication systems often require high gain antennas which are low profile and are capable of conforming to a variety of surfaces. A phased array utilizing distributed solid state components is capable of satisfying the wide angular scan coverage and low noise requirements. An array for receive only operation is described which utilizes monolithic microwave technology in a novel solution to the low profile constraint. The array operates at SHF frequencies, has 128 radiating elements and associated monolithic modules, and is approximately 8 by 13 inches. Radiating elements are microstrip patches fed by a unique capacitively coupled feed network resulting in an 8% bandwidth.

Book Design Investigation for a Microstrip Phased Array Antenna for the ORION Satellite

Download or read book Design Investigation for a Microstrip Phased Array Antenna for the ORION Satellite written by Mark B. Smith and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students at the Naval Postgraduate School are designing a general purpose mini-satellite that can be launched from a 'Get-Away-Special' cannister located in the cargo bay of the Space Shuttle and will be compatible with expendable launch vehicles as well. This thesis defines preliminary antenna systems and the design parameters for the telemetry system of the ORION mini-satellite. These antenna design parameters may be used for investigations of various proposed antenna systems and the design parameters also allow for trade-off studies with the mission capabilities and subsystems of the satellite. An investigation is made into the feasibility of using conformal microstrip patch array antennas for the telemetry, tracking and command (TT & C) systems. It is necessary to have two separate microstrip patch array antennas for the telemetry system: one uplink and one downlink antenna. The microstrip patch array antenna can operate as either an omnidirectional antenna or a directional antenna by changing the phase of the individual patch feeds. This feature gives the microstrip patch array antenna more flexibility for meeting the needs of potential users. Theses. (RH).

Book The Design and Analysis of a Phased Array Microstrip Antenna for a Low Earth Orbit Communication Satellite

Download or read book The Design and Analysis of a Phased Array Microstrip Antenna for a Low Earth Orbit Communication Satellite written by William Lee Barfield and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Naval Postgraduate School spacecraft design class proposed a multiple beam, phased array, microstrip antenna as part of the preliminary design of a low earth orbit communication satellite. The antenna must provide coverage over the satellite's entire field of view while both uplink and down- link operate simultaneously on the same 1-band frequency. This thesis assesses the feasibility of the antenna proposed in that preliminary design. Design tradeoffs for a microstrip array constrained by both available surface area and a limited mass budget are examined. Two different substrate materials are considered in terms of weight and performance. Microstrip patch theory is applied to array element design and layout and antenna array theory is applied to determine phase and amplitude coefficients. The focus of the design is on obtaining the desired beam shape and orientation, given antenna size constraints. A corporate feed method is discussed and a general design presented. Antenna performance is predicted through the use of a computer model based on Modal Expansion theory and results are plotted in a series of graphs which demonstrate the limitations of the proposed design.

Book Microstrip Antennas with Polarization Diversity Across a Wide Frequency Range and Phased Array Antennas for Radar and Satellite Communications

Download or read book Microstrip Antennas with Polarization Diversity Across a Wide Frequency Range and Phased Array Antennas for Radar and Satellite Communications written by Kevin Ming-Jiang Ho and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thesis comprises of 3 projects; an L-band microstrip antenna with frequency agility and polarization diversity, X-band phased array antennas incorporating commercially packaged RFIC phased array chips, and studies for Ku/Ka-band shared aperture antenna array. The first project features the use of commercially packaged RF-MEMS SPDT switches, that boasts of high reliability, high linearity, low losses, hermetically packaged and fully compatible for SMTA processes for mass-assembly and production. Using the switches in a novel manner for the feed network, microstrip antennas with polarization diversity are presented. Frequency agility is achieved with the use of tuning diodes to provide capacitive loading to the antenna element. Additional inductance effects from surface-mounted capacitors, and its impact, is introduced. Theoretical cross-polarization of probe-fed antenna elements is presented for both linear and circular polarized microstrip antennas. Designs and measurements are presented, for microstrip antennas with polarization diversity, wide frequency tuning range, and both features. Replacement of the tuning diodes with commercially-packaged high Q RF MEMS tunable capacitors will allow for significant improvements to the radiation efficiency. In another project, multi-channel CMOS RFIC phased-array receiver chips are assembled in QFN packages and directly integrated on the same multi-layered PCB stack-up with the antenna arrays. Problems of isolation from the PCB-QFN interface, and potential performance degradation on antenna array from the use of commercial-grade laminates for assembly requirements, namely potential scan blindness and radiation efficiency, are presented. Causes for apparent drift of dielectric constant for microstrip circuits, and high conductor losses observed in measurements, are introduced. Finally, studies are performed for the design of a Ku/Ka-Band shared aperture array. Different approaches for developing dual-band shared apertures are considered. Design for single-fed circular-polarized dual-band antenna element operating at 20 GHz and 30 GHz is presented. Designs for dual-band quadrature and differential phased 3dB couplers are presented. Studies are performed on cross-polarization performances of circularly-polarized microstrip antenna arrays resulting from performance limitations of individual antenna elements. Results of the pattern studies and designs of the dual-band components can be combined to evaluate practical performance of dual-band array implementation and required component specifications and bandwidth constraints.

Book Microstrip Antenna

Download or read book Microstrip Antenna written by J. R. James and published by IET. This book was released on 1986 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past few years, the concept of creating microwave antennas using microstrip has attracted increasing attention and viable practical designs are now emerging. The purpose of this monograph is to present the reader with an appreciation of the underlying physical action, up-to-date theoretical treatments, useful antenna design approaches and the overall state-of-the-art situation. The emphasis is on antenna engineering design, but to achieve this goal it has been necessary to delve into the behaviour of microstrip in a much wider sense and also include aspects of electromagnetic analysis. As a consequence, the monograph will also be of interest to microstrip circuit designers and to some extent those seeking electromagnetic problems of a challenging nature. The astronomical progress in miniaturising and integrating electronic circuits in the past decade has recently crerated a positive demand for a new generation of antenna systems. In principle, microstrip antennas are thin planar configurations that are leightweight, low cost, easy to manufacture and can be made conformal with the surfaces of vehicles, missiles etc. The compatibility of microstrip antennas with integrated electronics is another great advantage. However, the microstrip wavetrapping effects inhibit the radiation mechanism and must be taken into account in antenna design. Wave-trapping effects in substrates involve the study of surface waves and discontinuities in open waveguide structures. The microstrip antenna designer must therefore encompass many more effects than previously considered by microstrip circuit designers. It is for these reasons that the scope of this monograph is necessarily somewhat wider than the title may suggest. The ten chapters are a blend of introductory, practical and theoretical treatments and likely future developments are also highlighted. A good selection of past and current references are given and each chapter concludes with a helpful summary comment.
