Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sherborne, Vol. 1 of 3: Or the House at the Four Ways The atmosphere was in that state which, Homer tells us, is bad for shepherds but good for thieves. A chilly fog - thin, whitish grey, and equally diffused - made the tip of my nose feel a sort of un-enlivening tingle, such as one's inner self experiences when exposed to the pride, pomp, and circumstance of some ponderously unprofound criticism. It dimmed the outline of the policeman's hat at a hundred yards distance, and made the approximate gutter an important object by reason of its comparative distinctness. It caused all sounds to strike clearly on the tympanum, and aroused the ears of the mind into a sort of prospective attention. Tennyson says that "In the spring a young man's fancy Lightly turns to thoughts of love." But I believe that in the country the abstract idea of good, sturdy British matrimony - shy, home-growing, and often unconsciously heroic - is most practically busy on grey November days, when the air is chilly but not actually cold, and the sheep-bells tinkle softly in the folded turnip fields. Book The War of the Wheels

Download or read book The War of the Wheels written by Jeremy Withers and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-13 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid apocalyptic invasions and time travel, one common machine continually appears in H. G. Wells’s works: the bicycle. From his scientific romances and social comedies, to utopias, futurological speculations, and letters, Wells’s texts abound with bicycles. In The War of the Wheels, Withers examines this mode of transportation as both something that played a significant role in Wells’s personal life and as a literary device for creating elaborate characters and complex themes. Withers traces Wells’s ambivalent relationship with the bicycle throughout his writing. While he celebrated it as a singular and astonishing piece of technology, and continued to do so long after his contemporaries abandoned their enthusiasm for the bicycle, he was not an unwavering promoter of this machine. Wells acknowledged the complex nature of cycling, its contribution to a growing dependence on and fetishization of technology, and its role in humanity’s increasing sense of superiority. Moving into the twenty-first century, Withers reflects on how the works of H. G. Wells can serve as a valuable locus for thinking through many of our current issues and problems related to transportation, mobility, and sustainability.

Book Music and Medieval Manuscripts

Download or read book Music and Medieval Manuscripts written by Randall Rosenfeld and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interdisciplinary approach of Music and Medieval Manuscripts is modeled on the work of the scholar to whom the book is dedicated. Professor Andrew Hughes is recognized internationally for his work on medieval manuscripts, combining the areas of paleography, performance, liturgy and music. All these areas of research are represented in this collection with an emphasis on the continuity between the physical characteristics of medieval manuscripts and their different uses. Albert Derolez provides a landmark and controversial essay on the origins of pre-humanistic script, while Margaret Bent proposes a new interpretation of a famous passage from a fifteenth-century poem by Martin Le Franc. Timothy McGee contributes an innovative essay on late-medieval music, text and rhetoric. David Hiley discusses musical changes and variation in the offices of a major saint?s feast, and Craig Wright presents an original study of Guillaume Dufay. Jan Ziolkowski treats the topic of neumed classics, an under-explored aspect of the history of medieval pedagogy and the transmission of texts. The essays that comprise this volume offer a unique focus on medieval manuscripts from a wide range of perspectives, and will appeal to musicologists and medievalists alike.

  • Author : Richard Wadge
  • Publisher : The History Press
  • Release : 2009-03-10
  • ISBN : 0750967129
  • Pages : 361 pages

Download or read book Arrowstorm written by Richard Wadge and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2009-03-10 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book chronicles the overwhelming importance of the military archer in the late medieval period. The longbow played a central role in the English victory at the battles of Crecy and Agincourt. Completely undermining the supremacy of heavy cavalry, the longbow forced a wholesale reassessment of battlefield tactics. Richard Wadge explains what made England's longbow archers so devastating, detailing the process by which their formidable armament was manufactured and the conditions that produced men capable of continually drawing a bow under a tension of 100 pounds. Uniquely, Wadge looks at the economics behind the supply of longbows to the English army and the social history of the military archer. Crucially, what were the advantages of joining the first professional standing army in England since the days of the Roman conquest? Was it the pay, the booty, or the glory? With its painstaking analysis of contemporary records, Arrowstorm paints a vivid portrait of the life of a professional soldier in the war which forged the English national consciousness.
