Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shepton Mallet: Notes on Its History, Ancient, Descriptive, and Natural; With Illustrations I am sorry that the life of our mutual friend, my dear brother-in-law, John Edmund Farbrother, does not present more salient points, such as might form the subject of a copious memoir. But the usefulness of a life does not depend on the abundance of such materials. It often happens that those persons whose lives are, to casual observers, nothing more than a dull level -a changeless round Of ordinary duties and very moderate enjoyments - a recurrence even to same ness of little pleasures and little pains - a constant repetition of kindly acts, with as constant a sense of labours ill-requited and deserts lightly esteemed, are, in fact, the greatest benefactors of society. Book Gothic Tales

  • Author : Elizabeth Gaskell
  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Release : 2001-02-01
  • ISBN : 1101199873
  • Pages : 801 pages

Download or read book Gothic Tales written by Elizabeth Gaskell and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2001-02-01 with total page 801 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: '"The curse—the curse!" I looked up in terror. In the great mirror opposite I saw myself, and right behind, another wicked, fearful self' An encounter with the supernatural in an everyday setting accentuates its strangeness; a truth used to eerie effect in Gaskell's Gothic tales. A portrait turned to the wall, a hidden manuscript, a mysterious child that lives on the freezing moors, a doppelganger formed by a woman's bitter curse: all of these things hint at male tyranny and woman as avenging angel—or devil. Gaskell was fascinated by the dualities in women's lives and the way in which fact and fiction merge. 'Disappearances', a mix of gossip, legend and fact, relates stories of mysterious vanishings, 'Lois the Witch', based on an account of the Salem witch hunts, shows how sexual desire and jealousy lead to communal hysteria and persecution, while 'The Grey Woman' explores a common Gothic theme, the way in which the ghosts of the past always return to haunt us. This edition includes an introduction, chronology, explanatory notes and an appendix giving a reader's response to 'Disappearances'.

Book British Drama of the Industrial Revolution

Download or read book British Drama of the Industrial Revolution written by Frederick Burwick and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the advent of the French Revolution and the short-lived success of the Chartist Movement, overworked and underpaid labourers struggled to achieve solidarity and collective bargaining. That history has been told in numerous accounts of the age, but never before has it been told in terms of the theatre of the period. To understand the play lists of a theatre, it is crucial to examine the community which that theatre serves. In the labouring-class communities of London and the provinces, the performances were adapted to suit the local audiences, whether weavers, or miners, or field workers. Examining the conditions and characteristics of representative provincial theatres from the 1790s to 1830s, Frederick Burwick argues that the meaning of a play changes with every change in the performance location. As contributing factors in that change, Burwick attends to local political and cultural circumstances as well as to theatrical activities and developments elsewhere.
