Book Arts Programming for the Anthropocene

Download or read book Arts Programming for the Anthropocene written by Bill Gilbert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-11-21 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arts Programming for the Anthropocene argues for a role for the arts as an engaged, professional practice in contemporary culture, charting the evolution of arts over the previous half century from a primarily solitary practice involved with its own internal dialogue to one actively seeking a larger discourse. The chapters investigate the origin and evolution of five academic field programs on three continents, mapping developments in field pedagogy in the arts over the past twenty years. Drawing upon the collective experience of artists and academicians in the United States, Australia, and Greece operating in a wide range of social and environmental contexts, it makes the case for the necessity of an update to ensure the real world relevance and applicability of tertiary arts education. Based on thirty years of experimentation in arts pedagogy, including the creation of the Land Arts of the American West (LAAW) program and Art and Ecology discipline at the University of New Mexico, this book is written for arts practitioners, aspiring artists, art educators, and those interested in how the arts can contribute to strengthening cultural resiliency in the face of rapid environmental change.

Book Bervie and Beyond

Download or read book Bervie and Beyond written by Colin W. Thom and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-03 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bervie and Beyond reaches back to the early 1700s and into the lives of the author's paternal ancestry in North East Scotland, and then endeavours to trace the lives of all his fellow descendants through to around the mid-1900s. It tells the story of a not very successful smuggler who turned legitimate and established the first linen mill in Scotland. It progresses to his son Walter, who published several books in the early 1800s before being lured to Irelandby Chief Secretary Robert Peel to publish the Dublin Journal newspaper. But it was the next generation which brought real success. Alex Thom developed what was to become the leading Irish printing company, culminating in appointment as the country's Queen's Printer. Alex amassed a huge personal fortune which enabled him to establish his beloved Thom's Directory. By his own efforts it grew in content and stature, and quickly became the primary reference source for all things Irish. It was his greatest achievement, and the Irish nation will forever remember him for it. But wealth and a second marriage created downsides, with family divisions and a widow who took "spreading the joy" (to other than family) to a new art form. In the following generations we learn of a suicide, successful migration toArgentinaandSouth Africa, and in TheAntipodes, destitution.

Book Criminology and Climate

Download or read book Criminology and Climate written by Cameron Holley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the role of the insurance industry in contributing to, and responding to, the harms that climate change has brought and will bring either directly or indirectly. The Anthropocene signifies a new role for humankind: we are the only species that has become a driving force in the planetary system. What might criminology be in the Anthropocene? What does the Anthropocene suggest for future theory and practice of criminology? Criminology and Climate, as part of Routledge’s Criminology at the Edge Series, seeks to contribute to this research agenda by exploring differing vantage points relevant to thinking within criminology. Contemporary societies are presented with myriad intersecting and interacting climate-related harms at multiple scales. Criminology and Climate brings attention to the finance sector, with a particular focus on the insurance industry as one of its most significant components, in both generating and responding to new climate ‘harmscapes’. Bringing together thought leaders from a variety of disciplines, this book considers what finance and insurance have done and might still do, as ‘fulcrum institutions’, to contribute to the realisation of safe and just planetary spaces. An accessible and compelling read, this book will appeal to students and scholars of criminology, sociology, law and environmental studies and provides readers with a basis to analyse the challenges and opportunities for the finance sector, and in particular the insurance industry, in the regulation of climate harms.

Book Rural Change in Australia

Download or read book Rural Change in Australia written by John Connell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New twenty-first century economic, social and environmental changes have challenged and reshaped rural Australia. They range from ageing populations, youth out-migration, immigration policies (that seek to place skilled migrants in rural Australia), tree changers, agricultural restructuring and new relationships with indigenous populations. Challenges also exist around the 'patchwork economy' and the wealth that the mining boom offers some areas, while threatening regional economic decline in others. Rural Australia is increasingly not simply a place of production of agriculture and minerals but an idea that individuals seek and are encouraged to consume. The socio-economic implications of drought, water rights and changing farming practices, have prefaced new social, cultural and economic reforms. This book provides a contemporary perspective on rapidly evolving population, economic and environmental changes in 'rural and regional Australia', itself a significant concept. Bringing together a range of empirical studies, the book builds on established rural studies themes such as population change, economic restructuring and globalisation in agriculture but links such changes to environmental change, culture, class, gender, and ethnic diversity. Presenting original and in-depth interventions on these issues and their intersections, this book assembles the best of contemporary research on rural Australia.
