Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa, OFM Cap, preacher to the papal household for over forty years, graciously accepted Pope Francis’s invitation to lead a six-day retreat for the bishops of the United States in January 2019. Shepherds and Fishermen contains the reflections and meditations that guided this gathering, presented in an accessible format for groups and individuals seeking spiritual and ministerial inspiration. Shepherds and Fishermen lifts up the words of Mark 3:14: “He appointed twelve . . . that they might be with him and he might send them forth to preach.” Reflections and meditations offered in lectio divina, homilies, and liturgies focus on what it means to “be with Jesus” while also “going forth to preach.” Retreatants will reflect upon the ways their ministry is dependent upon both personal sanctification and pastoral activity. The twenty-six scripturally based and culturally relevant meditations make Shepherds and Fishermen an ideal companion for a self-directed retreat or a prolonged spiritual exercise. As Jesus’s call to be shepherds of sheep and fishers of men is addressed to every baptized person, the wisdom shared in this book will be treasured by bishops, priests, deacons, religious, candidates, and seminarians, as well as laity who wish to deepen their spiritual lives.

Book Green Worlds of Renaissance Venice

Download or read book Green Worlds of Renaissance Venice written by Jodi Cranston and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From celebrated gardens in private villas to the paintings and sculptures that adorned palace interiors, Venetians in the sixteenth century conceived of their marine city as dotted with actual and imaginary green spaces. This volume examines how and why this pastoral vision of Venice developed. Drawing on a variety of primary sources ranging from visual art to literary texts, performances, and urban plans, Jodi Cranston shows how Venetians lived the pastoral in urban Venice. She describes how they created green spaces and enacted pastoral situations through poetic conversations and theatrical performances in lagoon gardens; discusses the island utopias found, invented, and mapped in distant seas; and explores the visual art that facilitated the experience of inhabiting verdant landscapes. Though the greening of Venice was relatively short lived, Cranston shows how the phenomenon had a lasting impact on how other cities, including Paris and London, developed their self-images and how later writers and artists understood and adapted the pastoral mode. Incorporating approaches from eco-criticism and anthropology, Green Worlds of Renaissance Venice greatly informs our understanding of the origins and development of the pastoral in art history and literature as well as the culture of sixteenth-century Venice. It will appeal to scholars and enthusiasts of sixteenth-century history and culture, the history of urban landscapes, and Italian art.

Download or read book Italian Annotated Bibliography of Tuna Tuna like and Billfish Species written by Antonio Di Natale and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-12-15 with total page 923 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Italian-annotated bibliography on tunas, tuna-like and billfish species is a sort of unicum, because for the very first time, it provides annotation in English for all papers published by Italian authors over the centuries in various languages. Taking into account that these species are an essential component of the Italian and Mediterranean culture, thousands of authors published a very high amount of papers since historical times, on various themes and subjects. These large fish species are nowadays not only essential elements of the marine trophic chain, but also important components of human seafood and the related fishery economy. This book makes all these papers internationally available for all scientists, helping them in their research activities and the annotations facilitate the searching work by species and keywords.

Book Sicilian Epic and the Marionette Theater

Download or read book Sicilian Epic and the Marionette Theater written by Michael Buonanno and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzes the folkloric genres that comprise the repertoire of the marionette theater in Sicily. Here, epic, farce, saints' lives, bandits' lives, fairytales, Christian myth, and city legend offer the vehicles by which puppeteers comment upon, critique--perhaps even negotiate--the relationships among the major classes of Sicilian society: the aristocracy, the people, the clergy and the Mafia. The lynchpin of the repertoire is the Carolingian Cycle and, in particular, a contemporary version of The Song of Roland known in Sicily as The Death of the Paladins, a text which illustrates the means by which the Carolingian heroes--Charlemagne, Roland, Renaud, Ganelon, and Angelica--augment saints, bandits, Biblical figures and Sicilian folk heroes to provide the marionette theater its rhetorical function: the articulation and dissemination of the tools of Sicilian identity.

Book Opera Production II

  • ISBN : 0816657548
  • Pages : 370 pages

Download or read book Opera Production II written by Quaintance Eaton and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1974-03 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Opera Production II was first published in 1974. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. For the world of opera this is an indispensable basic reference work which provides essential information about more than 350 operas. Producers, singers, directors, students, orchestras, and audiences will find useful, concise information in this handbook, a sequel to the author's earlier book Opera Production I: A Handbook, which contains similar information about more than 500 other operas. While the first volume concentrates on more familiar operas, this book is devoted principally to lesser known works, both old and new, including many as yet unperformed contemporary operas. The details given about each opera are those needed to assess the production requirements for a given work: the number and importance of settings; size of orchestra, chorus, and ballet; number of singers, their relative importance and individual requirements; vocal and acting demands of performers, including vocal ranges in most cases; plot synopsis; and brief historical material to anchor the reader in the necessary knowledge of the period and source of the libretto. The information is compressed into capsule form so that anyone using the book can tell at a glance the suitability of a work to the particular facilities, talents, or tastes of an opera company or its public. In addition to the reference material, there is a chapter "Production Problems in Handel's Opera" by Randolph Mickelson, a helpful feature since nine of Handel's operas are included and they are apt to pose special production problems.

Book Representing Revolution in Milton and his Contemporaries

Download or read book Representing Revolution in Milton and his Contemporaries written by David Loewenstein and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-03-15 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Loewenstein's Representing Revolution in Milton and his Contemporaries is a wide-ranging exploration of the interactions of literature, polemics and religious politics in the English Revolution. Loewenstein highlights the powerful spiritual beliefs and religious ideologies in the polemical struggles of Milton, Marvell and their radical Puritan contemporaries during these revolutionary decades. By examining a wide range of canonical and non-canonical writers - John Lilburne, Winstanley the Digger and Milton, amongst others - he reveals how radical Puritans struggled with the contradictions and ambiguities of the English Revolution and its political regimes. His portrait of a faction-riven, violent seventeenth-century revolutionary culture is an original and significant contribution to our understanding of these turbulent decades and their aftermath. By placing Milton's great poems in the context of the period's radical religious politics, it should be of interest to historians as well as literary scholars.
