Book excerpt: Moose (Alces alces) and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) population numbers in northern Minnesota have fluctuated recently, possibly due to habitat changes, interspecific competition, and meningeal worm (Parelaphostrongylus tenuis). Little is known currently about the relative distribution and home range characteristics of sympatric moose and white-tailed deer in this area. Surveys were conducted during the winters of 1989 and 1991 to determine the relative distributions of moose and whitetailed deer pellet groups in Voyageurs National Park (VNP). Moose and white-tailed deer home ranges were determined using an adaptive kernel technique and applied to aerial radio telemetry relocations from 1989 to 1991. I examined the habitat selections of moose and white-tailed deer through compositional analysis at the home-range and core-area scales. Pellet transect data revealed a low abundance of moose and a high abundance of white-tailed deer and provided evidence of some spatial separation between moose and deer ranges in VNP. This evidence was supported by little interspecific home range overlap between radio collared moose and white-tailed deer. Moose home ranges in VNP were larger than any previously reported in the contiguous United States, and white-tailed deer home ranges were larger than any previously reported for the region. There was no apparent difference in home range sizes between the sexes for moose and white-tailed deer, although small sample sizes precluded precise statistical testing. Compositional analysis did not detect any habitat preference at the core-area scale for either moose or white-tailed deer. Both moose and white-tailed deer exhibited a significant preference for spruce/balsam fir habitats at the home-range scale. Canopy density and height preferences differed between moose and white-tailed deer at the homerange scale. Differential habitat preferences between moose and white-tailed deer in VNP might be related to the differences between these species' abilities to cope with northern mid-continent climates. The apparent spatial separation and different habitat preferences between moose and white-tailed deer might provide a refuge for moose from meningeal worm-infected white-tailed deer in VNP and could be a factor in the coexistence of the species.

Mech et al. presented evidence that moose Alces alces and deer Odocoileus virginianus population parameters are influenced by a cumulative effect of three winters' snow depth. They postulated that snow depth affects adult ungulates cumu- latively from winter to winter and results in measurable offspring effects after the third winter. 2. F. Messier challenged those findings and claimed that the population parameters studied were instead affected by ungulate density and wolf indexes. 3. This paper refutes Messier's claims by demonstrating that his results were an artifact of two methodological errors. The first was that, in his main analyses, Messier used only the first previous winter's snow depth rather than the sum of the previous three winters' snow depth, which was the primary point of Mech et al. Secondly, Messier smoothed the ungulate population data, which removed 22-51% of the variability from the raw data. 4. When we repeated Messier's analyses on the raw data and using the sum of the previous three winter's snow depth, his findings did not hold up.

Book excerpt: Winter (01 Jan - 15 Apr) habitat selection by Shiras moose (Alces alces shirasi) within individual home ranges was investigated using global positioning (GPS) collars on 23 adults (7 M, 16 F) during 2 winters (2005, 2006) of differing snow pack in the Snowy Range of the Medicine Bow mountains, southeastern Wyoming. Although wide variation was observed among animals, moose commonly selected for riparian shrub, deciduous forest, and mixed forest cover types. Mixed mountain shrub was occupied extensively by several moose and was used more often towards the end of winter, as moose tended to minimize movements and increasingly use other cover types in place of riparian shrub. Differences in selection ratios between sexes were not detected for any cover type and differences between years were minimal among moose collared both winters. Diets of moose during winter were also investigated through fecal analysis. Willow (Salix spp) and subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa) composed a mean 60% and 30% of moose diets, respectively, with the remaining 10% comprised mostly antelope bitterbrush (Purshia tridentata), mountain mahogany (Cercocarpus montanus), or Saskatoon serviceberry (Amelanchier alnifolia). Diets were more diverse in the year of less snow pack. Patterns of habitat selection by collared moose did not differ between winters, as would be expected if forage availability differed considerably between years. This was likely because moose GPS locations did not overlap fecal collection sites and forage item selection within those sites occurs at a different scale than the selection of cover types within home ranges. A literature-based winter habitat suitability index (HSI) model was developed from common geographic information system (GIS) layers and scrutinized with GPS locations of sampled moose. However, the HSI model was poorly predictive of winter habitat occupancy. More accurate resource selection function (RSF) models were constructed by integrating moose GPS locations with more refined GIS data layers. Numerous vegetative, topographic and distance variables were calculated across the study area and were used in a forward stepwise general linear regression model to identify important components of moose habitat during winter and non-winter seasons. Distance to forest edge and distance to deciduous forest were significant predictors in both seasons. Slope also influenced habitat use year-round, although slope2 was a factor in the winter model. While distance to riparian shrub was predictive of moose habitat occupancy during winter, the total area of riparian shrub within a circular 1 km radius was a better determinant of summer habitat use. The combination of variables in the winter model accounts for the distribution of willow, subalpine fir, mountain mahogany and antelope bitterbrush, in proximity to forest cover. The non-winter model demonstrated the nearly exclusive importance of riparian shrub habitat in proximity to thermal cover across a wider range of elevations than during winter. A technique was employed to make spatial calculations of the potential range capacity for moose using the winter RSF map predictions observed within individual moose winter home ranges. A wide range of capacity estimates were computed by adjusting the minimum habitat quality and maximum size parameters observed in moose winter ranges. Because not all moose are energetically capable of occupying the maximum observed home range size or competing for the highest quality habitat, more sensible estimates were produced using the mean winter home range quality and size inputs.

Book excerpt: In this book, we document and evaluate the recovery of gray wolves (Canis lupus) in the Great Lakes region of the United States. The Great Lakes region is unique in that it was the only portion of the lower 48 states where wolves were never c- pletely extirpated. This region also contains the area where many of the first m- ern concepts of wolf conservation and research where developed. Early proponents of wolf conservation such as Aldo Leopold, Sigurd Olson, and Durward Allen lived and worked in the region. The longest ongoing research on wolf–prey relations (see Vucetich and Peterson, Chap. 3) and the first use of radio telemetry for studying wolves (see Mech, Chap. 2) occurred in the Great Lakes region. The Great Lakes region is the first place in the United States where “Endangered” wolf populations recovered. All three states (Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan) developed ecologically and socially sound wolf conservation plans, and the federal government delisted the population of wolves in these states from the United States list of endangered and threatened species on March 12, 2007 (see Refsnider, Chap. 21). Wolf management reverted to the individual states at that time. Although this delisting has since been challenged, we believe that biological recovery of wolves has occurred and anticipate the delisting will be restored. This will be the first case of wolf conservation reverting from the federal government to the state conser- tion agencies in the United States.

Patches with differing properties and behaviors lie strewn across the land scape, products of the complex interactions of climate, disturbance, and biotic processes. It is the collective behavior of this patchwork of eco systems that drives pattern and process of the landscape. is not an end point This realization of the importance of patch dynamics in itself, however. Rather, it is a passage to a new conceptual framework, the internal workings of which remain obscure. The next tier of questions includes: What are the fundamental pieces that compose a landscape? How are these pieces bounded? To what extent do these boundaries influence communication and interaction among patches of the landscape? Will con sideration of the interactions among landscape elements help us to under stand the workings of landscapes? At the core of these questions lies the notion of the ecotone, a term with a lineage that even predates ecosystem. Late in the nineteenth century, F. E. Clements realized that the transition zones between plant communi ties had properties distinct from either of the adjacent communities. Not until the emergence of patch dynamics theory, however, has central signif icance of the ecotone concept become apparent.

It all seems pretty simple – what, where, when, how and why. However stating a problem does not mean it is easy to solve.
