Download or read book Shellback written by Stuart Landersman and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-04-17 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shellback is a naval and maritime action novel including Middle East intrigue, Cold War naval action, Korean War search and rescue, semi-pro baseball, romance and Washington high-level machination. All this is set in a tense web of high-seas drama focused on an attack against the Maritime Prepositioning Ships at Diego Garcia and on a Convoy Commodore who has a peculiar knack of getting himself into situations that require special judgment, decision making, innovation and determination. Martin Shielbrock is a retired Navy captain who has been recalled to active duty to conduct a routine exercise with the prepositioned ships at Diego Garcia. We have learned about Shielbrock in a series of his experiences leading up to this exercise and we have seen that he is not your everyday retiree, he has a way of figuring out what has to be done and doing it no matter what, even if told not to do it. Martin Shielbrock got his nickname Shellback early in his navy career and he is one stubborn guy. When he sets his mind to something and knows hes right, he does it regardless of consequences and regardless of advice or orders. He meets and marries the beautiful and elegant Barbara Muir, they have children and we learn of a possible compromise involving Barbaras wealthy former lover. Moses Farscian is a Kurdish Iraqi soldier to whom lifes adventure has been a series of disasters. We meet him in a complex situation of Middle Eastern intrigue in which the mission and cause of his operation are clouded by questions no one can answer, no one including some of the top intelligence sources in the world. The web of intrigue eventually brings Moses Farscian into contact with Martin Shielbrock. There are U.S. admirals and generals that influence the situations that Shellback finds himself in and there are Kurds, ayatollahs, Iranians, and Iraqis that hate, love, depend or dont care about Moses Farscian and his team mates or their operation. The story covers people from the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to a sailor who loses his favorite knife, old and young men and women, soldiers, sailors, and ball players, all trying to make their way through lifes complications and some make it while others dont. Theres technical detail, romance, violence, gunfire, missiles, helicopters, artillery, flame and death as well as love, as Shellback does what he does best he does what he thinks is right. But who knows whats right? Moses Farscian has a similar problem. Written by Stu Landersman, who spent 30 years in the U.S. Navy, Shellback is in no way autobiographical and Stu vows that he did none of the things that Martin Shielbrock does in this book, but admits to wishing he had.

Fearless."It's pretty safe to say that Spy was the most influential magazine of the 1980s. It might have remade New York's cultural landscape; it definitely changed the whole tone of magazine journalism. It was cruel, brilliant, beautifully written and perfectly designed, and feared by all. There's no magazine I know of that's so continually referenced, held up as a benchmark, and whose demise is so lamented" --Dave Eggers. "It's a piece of garbage" --Donald Trump.

His colorful recollections of people and events will intrigue and delight even the most serious fly tier. He also shares years of wisdom and knowledge on fly-tying colors; fly patterns; fly-tying tools, hooks, and materials; and fly-fishing and fly-tying methods. Hellekson' depicts hundreds of intricate patterns for dry flies, wet flies, and nymphs. Mayfly, stonefly, and caddisfly species are widely represented with simulations of the phases of their respective life cycles. Detailed patterns for terrestrials, damselflies and dragonflies, leeches and worms, midges, crustaceans, streamers, shad flies, steelhead flies, Atlantic salmon flies, Spey flies, Pacific salmon flies, and salmon and steelhead dry flies round out the book. This encyclopedia is organized into two distinct parts: the first section describes the origins of fly-fishing; the concepts of vision and perception of color; and the tools and materials from which artificial flies are created. It addresses dry flies, wet flies, nymphs, stoneflies, mayflies, and caddisflies. The second section of the book thoroughly attends to the simulation of other insect orders, such as terrestrials and crustaceans, and then delves into the specifics of streamers, shad flies, steelhead flies, and more. Even a fly-fishing novice will be enthralled with illustrations that clarify the patterns in a reader-friendly style. Line illustrations throughout, plus more than 2,950 detailed fly patterns-including 695 flies shown in full color-make this a comprehensive fly-tying encyclopedia beyond compare. Terry Hellekson was born into the world of fly-fishing and spent his early life in Happy Camp, California, where his father had a fly-fishing guide service on the Klamath and Trinity rivers during the 1940s and 1950s. Hellekson not only fly-fished and tied flies as a youth, but he developed many new fly patterns and eventually became immersed in all phases of the fly-fishing and fly-tying businesses. He founded Fly Fishing Specialties, a wholesale and retail business. He continually exchanges information with leading experts in fly-fishing and fly tying. Hellekson has traveled the world discovering sources for fly-tying materials and other products that he sold on the international market. He has also fished many of the great lakes and rivers of the world, traveling to such far off places as Kashmir to test the waters of the Himalayas. Hellekson is one of the founders of the Northern Utah Fly Fishers and the Granite Bay Fly Casters in northern California. Through fly-tying classes and fly-fishing clinics, he has taught countless numbers of fly fishers the fine points of the sporting art. Besides the many articles he has written on fly-fishing and fly tying, he has authored two books, Popular Fly Patterns (1976) and Fish Flies (1995), with this revised edition the culmination of a lifetime of work. He has also made generous contributions to the works of other authors. He now lives and fishes with his wife, Patricia, in Montana, where they have the famous Kootenai River at their doorstep.

Conduct Unbecoming will leave readers moved and imbued with a better understanding of the pressing situation in our nation's military. "A sober, thoroughly researched and engrossingly readable history on the subject. [Shilts's] chronicle is excellent military history, closely woven with an enthralling analysis of the changing definitions of sexuality and personal relationships in American society....[A] landmark book....Remarkable." --New York Times Book Review "A masterpiece of investigative reporting...Shilts has shown us the honor homosexuals have brought, and continue to bring, to the uniforms they wear and the country they serve." - Boston Globe "Gays, we are told, would damage morale in the military. Shilts documents the fact that morale has already been eaten away by hypocrisy, contradictions, and favoritism...This book will be to gay and lesbian liberation what Betty Friedan's was to early feminism or Rachel Carson's to ecological consciousness. No fair-minded person can read Conduct Unbecoming and consider the present system defensible. - USA Today "Gripping reading....the history of homosexual people and the movement for gay/lesbian equality in the United States can nowhere be more clearly told." - Los Angeles Times
Download or read book Shellback written by Jeanne-Marie Osterman and published by . This book was released on 2021-02 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A not-untroubled tribute and a difficult elegy, Shellback traces the attachment of a daughter to her father from her childhood days of trying "to be his boy" to the grown-up's task to be his caregiver in his last years. Including horrific details from the father's WWII Navy service in the Pacific, which the poet memorializes in blunt, terse lines, alongside the harrowing specifics of his decline, Osterman limns a portrait of a complex relationship. Marked by candor and clear-sightedness, these poems resist soothing resolutions and easy solace, which is why they are sure to ring true to readers. -Jeanne Marie Beaumont, Letters from Limbo Shellback is an elegy for a man who taught his youngest daughter how to "stretch a buck, drive a truck, / anchor a screw, win at gin rummy." Jeanne-Marie Osterman toggles between nightmarish scenes her father witnessed during World War II and the smaller but no less affecting traumas of his final months in a nursing home. Her language is spare and colloquial, with moments of irony and deadpan wit that illuminate every detail. The arduous work of losing and grieving is beautifully preserved in these poems, which in their vividness function like a series of photographs. Or a time capsule. Or amber-something tough, primordial, and nearly clear. Osterman conveys, impeccably and with unflappable grace, the hard-earned knowledge that "no one is only / their sins." -Mark Bibbins, 13th Balloon) The beautifully sequenced poems in Jeanne-Marie Osterman's Shellback yield a searing portrait of the poet's father as a Depression-era boy and a Navy World War II veteran, given to emotional coldness and barely repressed anger. Their poignancy resides in the poet's filial devotion, her wish to understand him and care for him in his old age. As Osterman writes in "Forgive: " "I let memories I can't erase / rest in peace, / knowing no one is only their sins." With often haunting imagery and carefully clipped lines, she memorably portrays a man, his era, and a daughter's unstinting love. -Gardner McFall, On the Line

Download or read book Hooks in Popular Music written by Tim Byron and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-22 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the first book-length study of hooks in popular music. Hooks - those memorable musical moments for listeners such as a riff or catchy melodic phrase – are arguably the guiding principle of much modern popular music. The concept of the hook involves aspects of melody, rhythm, harmony, production, lyrical and cultural meaning - and how these interact within a song’s topline and backing track. Hooks are also inherently related to the human capacities for memory and attention, and interact with our previous experiences with music. Understanding hooks in popular music requires a new interdisciplinary approach drawing from popular music studies, pop musicology, and music psychology, and this book draws from each of these disciplines to understand the hooks present in a broad range of popular music styles from the last thirty years.

Download or read book The Words and Music of Taylor Swift written by James E. Perone and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This scholarly analysis of the music of Taylor Swift identifies how and why she is one of the early 21st century's most recognizable and most popular stars. By the age of 13, singer-songwriter Taylor Swift had already inked a development deal with a major record label. This early milestone was an appropriate predictor of what accomplishments were to come. Now a superstar artist with an international fanbase of millions and several critically acclaimed and commercially successful albums, Swift has established herself as one of the most important musicians of the 21st century. This accessible book serves Taylor Swift fans as well as students of contemporary popular music and popular culture, critically examining all of this young artist's work to date. The book's organization is primarily chronological, covering Taylor Swift's album and single releases in order of release date while also documenting the elements of her music and personality that have made her popular with fans of country music and pop music across a surprisingly diverse age range of listeners. The chapters address how Swift's songs have been viewed by some fans as anthems of empowerment or messages of encouragement, particularly by members of the LGBTQ community, those who have been bullied or been seen as outsiders, and emerging artists. The final chapter places Swift's work and her public persona in the context of her times with respect to her use of and relationship with technology—for example, her use of social media and songwriting technology—and her expressions of a new type of feminism that is unlike the feminism of the 1970s.
