Book Shell and Folded Plate Structures

Download or read book Shell and Folded Plate Structures written by R Sundaram and published by White Falcon Publishing. This book was released on 2024-02-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book gives the details of thin shell roofs using concrete. No structural form perhaps does greater justice to the special attributes of concrete than thin shell construction. They derive strength through form rather than through mass. Of late, there is a great demand for large span roofs for buildings due to various functional requirements like sports stadia, convention centres, theatres, exhibition halls etc. I am giving an overview of some selected structures with large span concrete roofs.. It includes the design parameters, choice of construction materials, selection of structural system and the construction techniques adopted. The analysis and design of large span concrete roofs is indeed a challenging and interesting job compared to conventional roofs. In addition to a careful consideration of all critical load combination on the structure, analysis of the structural behaviour, during different stages of construction, if different from that of the fully built structure and final design are all essential steps for the successful realization of a large span structure. In this book I have discussed different types of shell structures. Most of them are either built or under construction and a few of them are yet to be constructed. Creep is an important aspect in concrete that is time dependent deformation and in shells the creep is to be taken care of. The development of concept design for shell and spatial structures is an art by itself and it depends on many factors like, type of roof, construction methodology, function, aesthetics etc. Recent availability of advanced computer softwares even for a small design office, facilitates usage of complex forms and shapes. Thin concrete shells consume the least amount of materials both cement and steel. Specially, important point is minimum consumption of cement. Shells are environmental friendly. I am quite sure this book will definitely highlight and gives an answer 'WHY BUILD SHELL STRUCTURES"

Book Design and Analysis of Shell Structures

Download or read book Design and Analysis of Shell Structures written by M. Farshad and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shell structures are widely used in the fields of civil, mechanical, architectural, aeronautical, and marine engineering. Shell technology has been enhanced by the development of new materials and prefabrication schemes. Despite the mechanical advantages and aesthetic value offered by shell structures, many engineers and architects are relatively unacquinted with shell behaviour and design. This book familiarizes the engineering and architectural student, as well as the practicing engineer and architect, with the behaviour and design aspects of shell structures. Three aspects are presented: the Physical behaviour, the structural analysis, and the design of shells in a simple, integrated, and yet concise fashion. Thus, the book contains three major aspects of shell engineering: (1) physical understanding of shell behaviour; (2) use of applied shell theories; and (3) development of design methodologies together with shell design examples. The theoretical tools required for rational analysis of shells are kept at a modest level to give a sound grasp of the fundamentals of shell behaviour and, at the same time, an understanding of the related theory, allowing it to be applied to actual design problems. To achieve a physical understanding of complex shell behaviour, quantitative presentations are supplemented by qualitative discussions so that the reader can grasp the `physical feeling' of shell behaviour. A number of analysis and detailed design examples are also worked out in various chapters, making the book a useful reference manual. This book can be used as a textbook and/or a reference book in undergraduate as well as graduate university courses in the fields of civil, mechanical, architectural, aeronautical, and materials engineering. It can also be used as a reference and design-analysis manual for the practicing engineers and architects. The text is supplemented by a number of appendices containing tables of shell analysis and design charts and tables.

Book Design of Plate and Shell Structures

Download or read book Design of Plate and Shell Structures written by Maan H. Jawad and published by American Society of Mechanical Engineers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written primarily for professional engineers interested in designing plate and shell structures. It covers basic aspects of theories and gives examples for the design of components due to internal and external loads as well as other loads, such as wind and dead loads. Various derivations are kept relatively simple and the resultant equations are simplified to a level where the engineer can apply them directly to design problems. More elaborate derivations and more general equations can be found in the literature for those interested in a more in-depth knowledge of the theories of plates and shells. The examples given throughout this book are intended to show the engineer the level of analysis needed to achieve a safe design based on a given required degree of accuracy. This book is also appropriate for advanced engineering courses.

Book Integral Mechanical Attachment

Download or read book Integral Mechanical Attachment written by Robert W. Messler and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integral Mechanical Attachment, highlights on one of the world’s oldest technologies and makes it new again. Think of buttons and toggles updated to innovative snaps, hooks, and interlocking industrial parts. Mechanical fasteners have been around as long as mankind, but manufacturers of late have been re-discovering their quick, efficient and fail proof advantages when using them as interlocking individual components as compared with such traditional means of joining materials like welding, soldering, gluing and using nuts bolts, rivets and other similar devices. For many years, it has been virtually impossible to find a single-source reference that provides an overview of the various categories of fastening systems and their various applications. Design engineers should find this book to be an invaluable source of detailed, illustrated information on how such fasteners work, and how they can save time and money. Students, too, will find this book to be extremely useful for courses in mechanical design, machine design, product development and other related areas where fastening and joining subjects are taught. This will be the first reference book to come along in many years that will fully illustrate the major classes of integral mechanical fasteners, replete with examples of typical assembly and ideas and suggestions for further research. * Covers all major techniques for integral mechanical attachment within the context of other types of joining including chemical (adhesive) bonding, melting and solidification (welding, soldering, brazing), and mechanical joining (fasteners and part features) * Includes specific chapters for particular attachment considerations by materials type, including metals, plastics, ceramics, glass, wood, and masonry * Provides unique coverage of mechanical/electrical connections for reliable contact and use

Book Theory and Design of Plate and Shell Structures

Download or read book Theory and Design of Plate and Shell Structures written by Maan Jawad and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of many structures such as pressure vessels, aircrafts, bridge decks, dome roofs, and missiles is based on the theories of plates and shells. The degree of simplification needed to adopt the theories to the design of various structures depends on the type of structure and the re quired accuracy of the results. Hence, a water storage tank can be satis factorily designed using the membrane shell theory, which disregards all bending moments, whereas the design of a missile casing requires a more precise analysis in order to minimize weight and materials. Similarly, the design of a nozzle-to-cylinder junction in a nuclear reactor may require a sophisticated finite element analysis to prevent fatigue failure while the same junction in an air accumulator in a gas station is designed by simple equations that satisfy equilibrium conditions. Accordingly, this book is written for engineers interested in the theories of plates and shells and their proper application to various structures. The examples given throughout the book subsequent to derivation of various theories are intended to show the engineer the level of analysis required to achieve a safe design with a given degree of accuracy. The book covers three general areas. These are: bending of plates; membrane and bending theories of shells; and buckling of plates and shells. Bending of plates is discussed in five chapters. Chapters 1 and 2 cover rectangular plates with various boundary and loading conditions.
