Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soil Survey of Shelby County, Kentucky, 1919 Shelby County, Kentucky, lies in the north-central part of the State nearly midway between the cities of Louisville and Lexington. Oldham and Henry Counties bound it on the north, Franklin and Anderson Counties on the east, Spencer County on the south, and Jefferson County on the west. The county is irregular in shape, with a length and width through Shelbyville, near its center, of 18 and 22 miles, respectively. Its total area is 382 square miles or 244,480 acres. Shelby County embraces a portion of an extensive general physiographic division of central and north-central Kentucky, known as the Lexington Plain. Viewed as a whole, this is an undulating, gently sloping plain. In Shelby County the slope is toward the west. The degree of dissection of this plain varies in different parts, and the county may be divided according to the local relief, determined largely by erosion, into three divisions. These are, as a rule, fairly well defined, although topography typical of one division may be found within the other two, and vice versa. The divisions are as follows: (1) The rolling to hilly region in the eastern and southeastern part of the county; (2) the undulating to broadly rolling region, occupying the central part; (3) the rolling region of the extreme western and an area South of Jeptha Knob in the southeastern part. The most prominent topographic feature of the county is Jeptha Knob, which is visible from nearly every ridge or hill crest and from whose summit may be seen the greater part of the county. Jeptha Knob is located just south of Clay Village and about 6 miles east of Shelbyville. It rises rather abruptly from the general level of the plain and attains an elevation of 1,185 feet, or about 300 feet above the surrounding country. The base of the knob has a general circular shape nearly 2 miles in diameter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Soils of the Eastern United States and Their Use XXXIX

Download or read book Soils of the Eastern United States and Their Use XXXIX written by Jay A. Bonsteel and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soils of the Eastern United States and Their Use XXXIX: Meadow The word Meadow, as applied to soil conditions and as used in the soil classification of the Bureau of Soils, designates those low-lying, frequently somewhat swampy areas found along stream courses and tidewater embayments, which are subject to overflow and which are chiefly devoted to pasturage and the production of hay, when used for agricultural purposes, though usually occupied by trees and dense undergrowth when in their natural condition. Meadow areas, according to this classification, are necessarily variable in texture, since they are among the youngest of soils. They are partially completed soil areas which are subject to frequent accessions of material which may be similar to that already deposited or may differ widely in texture from earlier deposits, depending upon the character of the successive overflows. The term Meadow as here used possesses the oldest significance of the word. This arises from the fact that before the introduction of the majority of grasses and clovers now used for seeding, the moist, low-lying lands supported a growth of the wild grasses that formed the chief dependence of the early farmers both for grazing and for hay. With the introduction of new grasses and with the spread of grass culture to the uplands, the term was transposed, together with grass growing, and the broader significance of the term was made to include the agricultural use of all land of any character where grass was grown for hay. The older use of the term, which is the definition adopted by the Bureau of Soils, is much more definite and significant for the purposes of soil classification. Areas of Meadow of various sizes occur along the courses of nearly all of the larger streams of the eastern portion of the United States. Wherever the bottom lands are subject to periodic overflow such soils may be formed. As a result of this condition along all stream courses where soil building is in progress, areas of Meadow have been encountered in 173 different areas, located in 31 different States and aggregating a total of 3, 086, 829 acres. This vast area constitutes but a small part of the total, and it may be safely estimated that not less than 20, 000, 000 acres of such soil deposits exist in the eastern part of the country. Download or read book Soils of the Eastern United States and Their Use written by Jay A. Bonsteel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soils of the Eastern United States and Their Use: The Memphis Silt Loam The soil type is derived from the weathering of the loess, a silty. Material associated with the glaciation of regions farther north. The Memphis Silt. Loam occurs at all altitudes from 50 feet above sea level in Louisiana to 500 or 600 feet above sea level in Illinois and Missouri. In general the drainage is good, although local areas marked by a gray-surface soil and the presence of iron concretions or iron gravel are in need of tile underdrainage. Owing to its soft, silty nature and its considerable elevation above adjoining bottom lands, a large part of the Memphis silt loam has been subjected to destructive erosion, and in such areas not over 20 per cent of the total extent of the type can be brought under tillage. In other areas, more remote from active stream erosion, fully 35 per cent of the type may be tilled, although erosion still constitutes a serious problem in the handling of this soil. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soil Report, Vol. 11: Pike County Soils In moving across the country, the ice gathered up all sorts and sizes of earthly material, including masses of rock, boulders, pebbles, and finer debris. Many of these were carried for hundreds of miles and rubbed against the surface rocks or against each other until ground into powder. When the limit of advance was reached, where the ice largely melted, this material was deposited in a broad, undulating ridge, or moraine. When the ice melted away more rapidly than the glacier advanced, the terminus of the glacier would recede and leave the moraine to mark the outer limit of the ice sheet.
